Just installed coreboot on my T60. Not only I didn't brick it, it's more responsive now. So, thinking back how it was kinda sluggish using it, does that mean the botnet got me hard or that coreboot doing things more efficient?

Coreboot likely is less bloated than the Intel tech.

...but how much does BIOS (basic input output system) affect a OS in runtime? Wasn't BIOS only there to get the hardware ready for OS takeover?

BIOS does more than a basic bootloader, it facilitates basic hardware interaction. In modern devices BIOS is just an overglorified bootloader (but we use EFI now), but older mobos can interface with peripherals and manage runtimes. They can also do remote microcode updates for Intel to backdoor your system.

i see. then i'm just happy it's more responsive now.

Probably just placebo aka wishfull thinking and lack of proper testing.

Why not libreboot? Did you have one of the funky T60's with ATI that wasn't compatible?

This. The Intel ME is in Northbridge or PCH and shares flash space with the BIOS. It can examine anything running on the system, regardless of OS.
