From research currently gathered, it looks to be impossible to run only free software at boot on i-series Intel hardware without direct hardware modifications. It's not impossible, but the level of over-complication of recent x86 hardware doesn't make it a process worth while to anyone. Expect the Libreboot project to move on to less corrupted hardware platforms, like ARM or PowerPC, for running only Libre software (See: Asus Chromebook C201). From what I've also gathered, the "pre-orders" of X220's from minifree were just an attempt at financial gain, as the person behind that website has no hardware modification abilities. They will never surface as a real thing.

TL;DR, don't get your hopes up for i-series Intel hardware ever being able to boot without non-free software.

So thats why they insist on wasting chip space for integrated graphics.
