SD to CF is an active adapter, might be slight performance penalty, but IDE controllers aren't the fastest anyways, why not just use a CF card?

Both modern CF and SD cards will last years and years even with swapping and hibernation, that's no problem anymore

CF cards are somewhat more spendy compared to a SD card with a CF adapter, a 32gb CF isn't too bad but going to 64gb, SD is way cheaper and will let me replace both hard drives since the hibernation thing isn't an issue

Try it first with a cheap SD card, if it works buy a proper sized SD card.
CF to IDE and SD to CF adapters should be that expensive, also SD to IDE adapters are basically the same as SD to CF ones.

Maybe you should go SATA to IDE and with a cheap SSD, probably even faster and drives around 120GB don't even cost that much.

If you don't want to pay for a high end sony walkman, aiwa is probably the best choice. Much cheaper and great sound.

Dolby C on something like this is rare and a kind of bragging point for this player, but I think Dolby C sucks anyway. It's probably is better for some recordings but I find B to sound better in like every case.

Also the problem with Dolby C is that you almost always need to use the same player for playback as you use for recording.
The tiniest misalignment or adjustment in the tape transport or electronics, makes it sound shite.
