Copying my chromium profile from my backup location(which i was running it on while i was restoring data) no longer works. It presents this error message.I checked for any lock files in the profile, and there are none. However if i point via command line to my backup profile, it works as expected. How do i restore my profile? There are no zombie or background chromium processes.

Failed to create a ProcessSinzgleton for your profile directory. This means that running multiple instances would start multiple browser processes rather than opening a new window in the existing process. Aborting now to avoid profile corruption.

Wizards Assemble!

Advanced users of GNU/Linux (and I mean advanced), remember to try Source Mage GNU/Linux. True source-based distribution, and (in contrast with Gentoo and Arch) is:
Free from obfuscated and pre-configured code.
Fully committed to GPL, uses only free software (as in freedom) in their main package.
With even the documentation licensed as FDL.
Without 3rd party patches, sensible defaults or masked packages.
Doesn't need obfuscated python libraries, only bash.
No systemd (they've implemented their own init scripts system http://sourcemage.org/Init).
Uses clean dependencies as they came from upstream developers, which by the same provides instant updates.
Can heal broken installs.
Can also use flags.

Do you like Arch Linux's AUR? Do you like Gentoo's portage (or ports-like) package manager? With SMGL's "sorcery" you get all that. Making new spells (package build files) not found in the grimoire (repository of spells) is easy http://sourcemage.org/Spell/Book

Bash hackers welcome! Come and join http://sourcemage.org/

Installing SMGL is easy, here's the simplified process:
>boot a live Ubuntu (or whatever) USB drive
>go to SMGL website and download compressed archive of the base system
>partition and mount partition(s)
>extract the archive onto the new partition(s)
>chroot, set root passwd, hostname, configure network and locale, write fstab, install grub/lilo
>reboot
>compile a kernel (preferably the newest stable one from kernel.org)
>update sorcery, grimoires and the build toolchain
>rebuild the system (hold spells you've already built, so you don't build them twice)
The install guide will hold your hand through the whole process http://sourcemage.org/Install/Chroot
Do the chroot method, since the regular live ISO method guide is out of date currently.

Here's a list of common commands: https://pastebin.com/i4DALaNV

What's a good program to use to customise mouse buttons, do i even need a program to this with xfce? My logitech mouse has 3 extra buttons on the side and the scroll wheel can be tilted for more clicks but right now they all do nothing. I was also wondering if I can maybe hold a button on the keyboard, then use the scroller on the mouse to simulate left mouse clicks so I can click really fast.

What sort of customization are you talking about? If you just want to map them to different mouse-type inputs (e.g. change which buttons act as middle-click, scroll wheel, etc..) then you can do that with xinput
Or are you talking about completely customizing their actions, like a mouse button to open your webbrowser or something, or a game macro, then you'd need to use the software that comes with your mouse which is most likely windows only

Linux Mint with KDE desktop

Security: It's Linux - don't install malicious programs and you're about as secure as a normie ncan get. Security beyond this is on the user, not the kernel or OS.
Installing shit: Show her the synaptic package manager and how it works. If she's inquisitive then also show her the terminal, and sudo, apt-get, install, and upgrade commands.

There WILL be problems so make sure you're available to fix any issues that come up.

Remember, normies don't use Linux because:
1. MS Excel and Word don't work / they can't open or save all the proprietary MS filetypes from work/friends/assoc. properly
2. They're used to windows and don't like changing what already works
3. Their favourite proprietary software isn't available on Linux

If you can get over these hurdles, you'll have them on Linux for life.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

The distro matters when it comes to security.
The distro makes a ton of decisions for you like when to get feature updates, when to apply security updates etc.
Mint does not have a good track record.
And if you want KDE, neon is a better distro anyway. It is far more normie friendly.
If that means not having to use a terminal all the time.
Eg. The GUI for updating software is fine.
As for word/excel, playonlinux (wine) works fine.
If you are the person converting people, try out to do what they claim as a "basic task" in an alternative application or in wine, it might work.
>>
>>62108631
For anyone with a day job Mint is everything they could have ever asked for from Linux.

The problem with linux autists is that they don't understand how normies work. Normies want pretty and slick interfaces. Normies want shit that works with no configuration. Normies don't want to wrassle with their operating system. Normies don't give a fuck about bloat so long as it's responsive and usable.

For 80% of normie things, Linux Mint Just Werks.

>>62108664
Because Mint isn't married to open-source philosophy and is willing to do what it takes to actually work on the widest selection of normie hardware out of the box. Anyone saying mint sucks for normies is basically a bandwagon faggot who can't think for himself or a distro hipster.

Also these threads are full of anti-linux microsoft trolls like >>62108651 who try to push people away from the easiest to use distros.

When you convert someone, you set it up for them.
You talk to them for a while so you know what they expect from their computer and you have everything ready.
When you know what tasks they do, you can test these items to see if it will work and ultimately set it up for them.
Some times that can be tough and some times it require them to do a lot on their own, but if you install random shit on their computer and leaves it in a state where they can't use it, you basically broke their machine.
When they have used it for a while, they can learn to setup everything themselves.

If you think that just mentioning mint will solve all their problems, you are wrong.

>>62112853

That's not ideal. Because I want the screenblanking to happen when Firefox is idling on a website with no video, but not when it's playing back video.

The lack of a common way to handle that is a flaw in distributions. There are various implementations for screensavers and blanking and then you have the low-level stuff like DPMS and Xorg. If there was a common way to expose the low-level settings via dbus or something and then programs could inhibit it via that when they perform certain actions, tha would be ideal. But of course it's never going to happen.

You are so pathetic that you want to post your obvious non-solution because you think you're so smart for figuring something out.
Just stop posting you embarrassment for a person.

I'm thinking about installing Ubuntu on my notebook as my main (and only) OS. I'm relatively tech-savvy I built my first PC as a child by myself following forum guides, taught myself html/css basics for hobbyist site dev and have even built a arch linux VM following a guide but never really used it, I just wanted to see how that works.

So I do have a very basic understanding of computers and tend to be able to work my way around them. However I'm worried I don't know enough to be using a OS that is so user dependant.

My main concern is viruses, I've heard Linux doesn't really have anti-virus software but I know it certainly has viruses, how would someone with a basic computer knowledge like me be sure they're not compromised?

I'm planning on using Ubuntu because this will be my main computer and I would like it to be a fairly fluid experience and as an outsider looking in it seems like Ubuntu is the most mainstream OS, I really would like simplicity, but I am open to suggestions if you have any?

I didn't have backups for the download directory, because it was a temporary storage before sorting it.

I am thinking about wrapping rm into something that would move things to /tmp or similar, but I don't know if it's worth it.

there are some

Thank you, I know there is software out there but I've heard it's not really something linux users will use as it is usually lacking - I don't know anything but hearing that doesn't fill me with confidence.

Is there any reason to use the original bourne shell (sh) over bash/dash/fish/korn/zsh?
>>
>>62113398
Dont use bash, it was created by a nigger
>>
>>62113180
Always doublecheck your rm, especially if you use -rf with it.
>>
>>62113175
>My main concern is viruses
Why? There are many exploits and dangers that aren't related to viruses at all. Viruses aren't really that big on the threat list since decades ago.
>>
>>62113407
Lots of people love and use bash, that hasn't stopped even weev from loving it.

>>
>>62113449
I meant it as a general term for threats, as I said not a tech-head here.
>>
>>62113180
Bad idea. Setting an alias for rm -rf to something like rm -rif will make you use rm -rf more liberally, because you're going to assume (consciously or not) that that alias is going to always be there, and if you're on a shell that doesn't have that bashrc/zshrc/whatever, you might, through sheer muscle memory, instinctively nuke your root directory assuming that there was going to be a safety net, when there actually wasn't.
>>
>>62113825
>root directory
Um no.
--no-preserve-root

Anti-birus software is really useless in any scenario but enterprise. What people don't realize is that most anti-malware software only protects against software that's been spotted in the wild--in which case, you're better of just using the upstream patches.

The other side of anti-malware is when you open up a page that you shouldn't have, like a Softpedia link, and download some horrible shitware like an idiot. A better way to fix this issue is to use a content blocker like uBlock Origin and enable blocklists. It'll prompt you before you enter a site that's referenced on its blocklist.
>>
>>62113854
Yes, but that doesn't stop you from using
rm -rf /*
instead of
rm -rf ./*
.

Is there a way to get GTK to put the scroll bar on the left side for all my software the way that other, older toolkits do it?

And why did we stop putting the scrollbar on the left side, anyway? That's where all my icons and buttons are. Why shouldn't the scrollbar be there, too?

I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a second partition for a laptop I recently bought, it Ubuntu freezes early in the installation. I've looked into the issue and I think nvidia drivers are at fault.

Has anyone else had this problem? How do I solve it? I disable fast boot and secure boot (or at least I think I did it the right way). I've also replaced quiet splash with nomodeset at the BIOS, just prior to commanding it to install Ubuntu. Installation still freezes.

Can anyone help, please?

So the one you ran DELETEd FUCKING EVERYTHING in the folder instead of just deleting something* files like you intended?

Also, isn't * the token for 0 or more matches while + is the token for 1 or more matches (or the preceding token?
>>
>>62114543
1.boot normally
2.press Ctrl+Alt+F2
3.login
4.remove bumblebee

Ctrl+Alt+F2 will bring you to VT2. Normally this does not automatically start the x-server so youll have a command line to do what you need to
>>
>>62114543
reboot, when you enter GRUB press 'e'
find the line starting with `linux` and put `init=/bin/bash` at the end and press F10
this will temporarily boot you into the kernel provided console with bash as the init, leaving out systemd
most modules inculding gfx modules won't be loaded
you should be able to do everything you need from there

It's often defended by people who mistake their inability to find anything wrong with it, despite the fact that they know nothing about it whatsoever, as an indicator that their actually is nothing wrong with it.
and so they assume people who dislike it have all sorts of silly reasons for doing so, when in fact they are technical reasons and very sound ones.

Funny enough the reasons its disliked are similar to reasons why ALL users here tend to prefer GNU/Linux over other operating systems. How easy is it to explain to your mother why you prefer it over Windows? She just doesn't understand.
It's the same thing with systemd, and the only reason people who defend systemd don't see the same flaws within it that they see all over the place in other OSes is because they don't know enough about systemd.
