I want to buy an SSD and replace my hdd as the main windows boot drive and also install games on it.
Is this a straightforward process or should I just not bother?

you have 2 options, you can install a fresh copy of windows in which case it is literally plug and play
if you want all your old shit on your SSD you'll have to use cloning software like Acronis which takes a few more clicks.

How do I install fresh windows on the ssd?
Do I just connect it by usb or something on my pc?

cloning software on windows is literally garbage and will more likely screw something up
just reinstall

If you can get your windows partition to be smaller than the SSD size then yes, you can just clone the drive over and be good to go on the new drive
if not, you'll have to uninstall some shit to make room

Never been a problem for me
In the worst case you can just use a linux livedisc and dd it over

The main thing to remember if you clone the drive:
The first time you boot up the newly cloned SSD into Windows, MAKE SURE THE OLD DRIVE IS UNPLUGGED
Otherwise the SSD windows install will think it's on the HDD and lots of things will be all fucked up and youll have to recopy it

Thanks for the tip

>create backup of files and a system image and store on external drive of similar size to hdd
>download the shit on windows website to make a bootable drive on a flash drive
>remove hdd
>put ssd in computer
>put in flash drive
>install windows on ssd
>put hdd back in computer
I would personally then completely clear the hdd and copy the files from external drive to hdd
