My GF 88000GT is finally dead after 10 years of serving me. What

My GF 88000GT is finally dead after 10 years of serving me. What I'm seeing though is that modern GPUs are somehow still using PCI-E x16, except there's a mysterious 3.0 right next to it. What is this 3.0? Could I buy any modern GPU and it would work with my mother board?
