I've had mine for a good 2+ years. Got it used and fitted it with a 1080 IPS panel, 12GB RAM, 500GB SSD, and a t450s trackpad. Also got the extended 6 cell battery. The thing is tough and lasts all day.

I've replaced the whole body too after dropping it a bunch of times accidentally and taking a few chunks out of the corners. Looks good as new and a new back cover, bottom plate, and top bezel were less than 80.

Some of the newer, larger ones (P series) might have 4k screens.

Hi
>>
Dude, I'd just buckle down and buy an XPS. A little while ago they were selling them at Costco for a spicy deal. I bought mine for 1400 with 16 GB ram, i7-7560u, Iris Plus 640, QHD touch screen, 500gb SSD, etc. The thing is extremely good. The only quirk it's had is that the Killer wireless card crashes my Archer C7. This can be easily fixed by buying a 30 $ Intel wireless card, or just using a USB antenna at home.
>>
The Lenovo Yoga 720 is a nice alternative, especially if you can get it at <$800 (i5/16gb/256gb) when BestBuy puts it on sale. For the price of the XPS, considering the coil whine issue that Dell obviously doesn't two fucks about (it's been 3 generations now), I would get a Thinkpad X1 Carbon instead.
>>
>>62099013
The thing about the way Lenovo is handling the Thinkpad brand is that it's possible to buy a cheap Thinkpad now. Back when IBM was heading it up, there was no cheap one. The lines that Lenovo continued, the X and T series most notably, are still pretty good. Where you run into issues are the lower end product lines. The Edges, the Yogas. A T470 is of comparable quality to a T420 from what I've heard.
>>
>>62099493
>dat bottom chin

>>
>>62101206
T470 has Linux-compatibility issues that probably won't be resolved for at least several more months.

That's kind of annoying but it's also a relatively new product. Even with a Thinkpad you use brand new hardware at your own risk with Linux.

Still Better than a Mac, especially for 400 bucks.

>cpus slower than its predecessor AND successor gen
Also the first thinkpad to actually hit 10+ hours of battery life with 6 cell + internal 3 cell. It runs an ultramobile chip, so it's designed for power efficiency. Does everything I personally need it to.

>that shitty trackpad with touch buttons
Yeah, but you can replace the trackpad for less than 40 bucks. Also, if you don't use a trackpoint, the trackpad is perfectly fine. It has a nice glass surface and a clicky switch.

>the beginning of soldered only cpus
Name one other business laptop today that doesn't have a soldered CPU.

It's not the size of the ram but the speed
IGPU especially is severely affected by not being dual channel ram
>>
>>62091277
No, it's not better as drivers suck ass as well as it's build quality, plus it doesn't run an optimized system as OS X so your point on hardware is invalid, and it also has the added point of wanting to be like those who suck cocks but unable to get the real thing.

>A lot of asus "consumer" laptops are just as sturdy and repairable as your "business" laptops.

Go ahead and tell yourself whatever lies you want to help you sleep better at night.

Used business laptops are the absolute best bang for your buck you can possibly get. If I had any laptop other than my t440s, I would have had to throw it out a year ago when I completely wrecked the chassis. I dropped this thing over a dozen time and rebuilt it for less than 80 bucks.

Go on eBay and try to find new, cheap repair parts for any consumer laptop. Good luck with that, since they don't manufacturer and sell individual parts for those laptop models. You have to buy a used model, pray that the part you want to replace is still intact, then remove the part off the used one.

New business laptops are expensive because of the support and extra administrative features that are provided with them. It makes no sense for a consumer to buy a new business laptop.

Used business laptops are cheap because business replace their hardware more often than not and dump them even if they're barely used, which people buy for a fraction of the cost. This is the kind of good shit that lasts forever.

If you're just going to be running shit on a Linux terminal and ssh to your powerhouse desktop/server at home, then there's nothing better than a sleek, used business laptop.
>>
>>62105876
Yeah it's ridiculous how some people here actually think "consumer is shit, business is better".

While Latitudes are indeed nicely built, there's also well built "consumer" laptops that give you better performance for their price. and while buying a used Latitude or Thinkpad may not be that expensive, it's also hit and miss (remember abput the guy with bed bugs in his refurbished thinkpad who got his house infested?) and it's not the solution for anyone who needs power on his laptop as a "business laptop" with decent power is like 2000 bucks.

Or you can get a 800 $ Asus that's all metal built, sturdy as hell, easy to repair and also with all the power you need.

>ASUS
>easy to repair

At my shop, we had to actually apoxy a hinge mount back to the screen assembly because the parts literally weren't available any where. This happens quite frequently with all the so-called better-consumer brands. Vaio, Samsung, ASUS, etc ...

It was the most pathetic thing I'd ever seen. Guy was begging us to fix it. So we did something we never do, and were forced to 'jerry rig' the shit out of it.

At least with business laptops, the parts are almost fucking standardized, and in some cases purchasable direct from the manufacturer.
>>
>>62106066
>If you're just going to be running shit on a Linux terminal and ssh to your powerhouse desktop/server at home, then there's nothing better than a sleek, used business laptop.

You keep missing the point. Your chinkpad (a shitty one to be accurate) is no answer for anyone who needs some power on his laptop

Not everyone has the same needs, "business" laptops may be good for salarymen or students who only need to write some code or write documents on word, but if you need power a mid-high range ASUS is the best bang for buck and has the same build qualities your "bisiness laptops" have

Heck mine's 4 years old and still kicking after carrying it around everyday and taking bad hits, if it's build quality sucked as you say it would be dead by now
>>
>>62106170
If you need power get a workstation
>>
>>62106066
>Go on eBay and try to find new, cheap repair parts for any consumer laptop

Found both front panel screen and plastic bezel for a shitty old acer i wanted to repair for less than 25 $ complexively some years ago. Your bisiness meme is dead
>>
>>62106170
>I have no idea what a used Precision is

M4800 says hello faggot.
>>
>>62106170
If you want something with a bit more power, then get a workstation business laptop. It's going to last way longer than any consumer-shit product on the market that's designed with a 2-4 year lifespan in mind.
>>
>>62106159
Depends on what ASUS.

I repair them too and generally the ones with more decent graphics are better built and easier to repair, not much difference with chinkpads.

The ones with the GTX 610M or shit like that are garbage though

Neat.

Now find me a replacement keyboard and trackpad. Also, a main board while you're at it. Oh, of course, we can't forget a new, oem battery.

Good luck.

Trackpad, battery and keyboard were all available you faggot. dunno about main board but I think I'd buy a new one if that broke. Thinkpads are not that "built as a tank" if you end up breaking the main board

>>
>>62106302
Used will be like 1200 $ and who knows how's the conditions

While I can get a new good, more powerful ASUS for less than 1000.

I don't understand your autism guys. Try harder to convince me that I need your memes.

Spaz. Toddler's opinions are discarded.
>>

>Trackpad, battery and keyboard were all available you faggot.

Neat. Probably none of those parts are OEM though.

The problem is that you're not going to find that shit for every consumer laptop. If it's a business laptop, you're pretty much guaranteed to find original parts down the line if shit ever hits the fan.
>>
>>62106322
You literally cant find an ASUS product new for less than the price of a well specced M4800 and have it be even remotely close to the same power and quality.

Fuck off, kindly.
>>
>>62106348
Heck am I the only one who treats his laptop with care? It seems everyone here drop them, hit them, don't you sit on them too?
>>
>>62106373
You can. Unless for you "quality" is the Dell logo and the feeling that you belong in a group of people who share the same autism for "business laptops" and that makes you feel better. Not gonna judge you for that, only I prefer thinking with my own mind rather than doing what some anonymous people on an anime website tell me.

A bad backpack purchase decision was made. There's a reason why they discontinued this bag and updated it with a version that puts the laptop compartment on the inside of the flap.

Check the comments.

A dozen times? Did you put your backpack on upside down?
>>
>>62106489
You didn't read the comments. The bag has a side compartment for a laptop. If you forget to zip the side of the bag up, which several people forgot to, your laptop will fall out.

Like I said, they discontinued that version of the bag.
>>
>>62106471
Is that your argument?

a refurbished m4800 is 800 bucks on ebay ok?

It has a midrange i7, only one SSD slot and nvidia quadro which already isn't that good for any task which isn't using autocad. For a little extra dough you can get this baby:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B071ZL3996/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1503796511&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=asus+i7+7700hq&dpPl=1&dpID=512sYinkCrL&ref=plSrch
>better i7
>full metal built but also slim and light (which is quite important for a laptop since you have to carry it on your shoulders all day)
>both SSD and HDD
>gtx 1050 that owns your little quadro

Why should I not choose this if I need a good and performing laptop and I have 1000 bucks?
>>
>>62106531
What about not doing it after it fell the first time? And you complain about "consumer laptops"

Look I'm gonna complain about the thinkpad's build quality cause I hammer the screen and it breaks

It's simply what I needed wtf don't hate me just because my superior quality of being an adult who takes care of his stuff lets me focus on power rather than build quality

I used to support ASUS

I did.

I loved them. Thought they were a great company

You'll learn eventually. Or you wont, because you're either lucky or a dumbass.

only for you americucks, here in europe (yeah I'm a german masterrace despite using US prices and links to make you understand easier) laws give us 2 years warranty and I personally had good experience with asus support (a friend of mine got his defective Zenfone 3 replaced with a new one after 4 months from purchase)

Dell realized that their business laptop quality was inferior to their XPS line, so they just copy pasted the XPS exterior and put better quality hardware on the inside.

Pic related is the precision 5520. Comes with a Xeon CPU and quadro graphics.
>>
I have a last year XPS 13 and I love it. It's a top spec setup with the 4k touch screen and whatnot. The only problem I ever have had with it is that the power brick died and had to be replaced, otherwise it's pretty good.

Have it set up to dual boot with kali and windows 10 and it just flies. If there was one change I'd make it'd be to have 4 or more cores on it. If raven ridge APUs make it to the XPS13 I'll definitely upgrade.

Oh and I ripped out the shitty factory installed wireless card and put in an 8265. Works much better.
