CPUs:
No i5's unless cheap. Consider waiting for Coffee Lake (1 month). 8700K is certain to be the fastest gaming CPU, will be competitive in productivity tasks vs 8-core Ryzen.
>G4560 - poverty builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good bridge between the 1500x and 1200, only get a 1400 if you really need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners increased prices, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Low end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Vega is shit

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS
Consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor

How much until 8gb RAM isn't enough for gaming?
>>

Just get a mobo with more than 1/2 RAM slots
>>
I got a mobo with two opteron 6172. The mobo needs 2 8pin power sources. Most probably 32GB DDR3-1333 ram and a GTS 250 (found somewhere in another old computer). PSU calculator said to get at least 550W (I'd buy at least 600W then). The case is very large, so long cables are needed. What power supply do you recommend for this setup?

Should I pull the trigger now on a r5 1600 combo (mobo, cpu and ram) or wait for coffe lake i5 and compare. How many more weeks do we need to wait for benchmarks? Does it matter if I OC a ryzen5 1600 above 3.8Ghz with a gtx 1060 6gb? To OC above 3.8 I'd need aftermarket cooling and it might be useless if the GPU is the weaklink and not the CPU.

imo you're overpaying for 1600x and that cooler, that extra 0.2GHz isn't worth it.
why that ssd? you can have 500gb m.2 for $150. not worth paying $50 extra for higher numbers in synthetic benchmarks.

you can use your old gpu in the meantime.

So my $70 used parts build isn't booting. The thing is I am in the middle of buying my parts. I have everything but the CPU and motherboard

I won't be able to return some of the stuff by the time the 8700k comes out(in a month?). Hopefully nothing is doa. But ryzen will have 2 more generations of cpus I can just add on to my current motherboard though so I might consider that.

Unless you're going for 144hz, you rarely have to get a new CPU just for the fear of bottlenecking. I'm replacing my GTX 760 with a 1080 this week and will be using an i5-3570k with it.
>>
>>62054701
>But ryzen will have 2 more generations of cpus I can just add on to my current motherboard though so I might consider that.

You answered your own question anon, AM4 is superior for that very reason. But if you go with the 8700k then whenever you want to upgrade you have to spend $500+ for the whole MB+CPU. Don't forget that Ryzen comes with a superior cooler unlike the shit that ships with Intel.
>>
>>62054659
I did.

Depends on what you want/budget, good mid-range that does 1080p@60hz is R5 1600 + 16gb RAM@3200 + GTX1060. So long as your PSU works you could keep it.

You could also just throw a new GPU in there but even a 1060 will probably bottleneck.

Right now I'm running a gtx 1080 with a freesync monitor. I hate the tearing without vsync, and hate the lag with vysync on. Would it be worth it to sell it for a vega 56? Even though I know it's more comparable to a 1070, I feel like it would feel a lot smoother since I have a freesync monitor. The only other option is to sell the monitor and go gsync, but if that's the case I wouldn't do it until I could afford something like a predator x34

You guys think I can get away with selling this cpu I have and put those funds towards an i7-7700k and new mobo?
>>
>>62057621
I am amazed at how incompetent some people in this thread are. You don't know the clearest symptom of bad hardware acceleration and somehow bought a Vega? What did you buy an i5 to go with that Vega?
>>
>>62057638
Old CPUs are only worth selling if you sell them together with their mobo. No one is going to buy a second hand CPU and then waste time finding a compatible socket.
>>
>>62057624
The monitor is only 2560x1080/75hz, so it's safe to say that almost every game I play at that resolution with a 1080 is getting more than 75fps and causing tearing. And even ones running under 75fps still don't look great without adaptive sync
>>
>>62057638
you may as well just wait for coffin lake or zen2 at this point
>>
>>62057652
Thing is my mobo is fucked, two ram slots are bad. Think I can get some good goyim to give me shekels for it?
>>
>>62057654
What is the adaptive sync range of that monitor? Because if it is narrow, it is not like using Vega56 will help. Try using MSI afterburner to limit your FPS and see if it helps.
>>
>>62057673
Only if you outright state that the thing is living on borrowed time. Otherwise it may come bite you in the ass.

>>62057696

>>62056925
I think it's because people expected more. Maybe with driver updates it'll get better but I think most people expected something close to a 1080 Ti out of it, instead it barely competes with a 1080 and with much higher power usage. Granted, its compute capability it huge for its nominal price but most consumers don't give a shit about that.

That is a good range. For what it is worth, it is clear that you are using your 1080 for stuff beneath what a 1080 can handle so you won't be missing much if you move to Vega. Good luck getting one tho.

>it is clear that you are using your 1080 for stuff beneath what a 1080 can handle

Ya that's the thing, I originally had an rx 480 which was a perfect card for that resolution, but with the mining boom I sold it for $480 and essentially got a free upgrade to a gtx 1080. I figured giving up freesync would be fine since the 1080 would consistently be putting out high framerates, and at that point I was sick of waiting for Vega, but I really miss the smoothness of freesync

Dual monitor setups are cool and getting a Gsync monitor with 144hz is pretty neat. Otherwise, at least wait for the AiB Vegas.

I made a thread, but I may as well ask in here as well

So im installing windows on a brand new PC, anf everything goes fine until I get to pic related, then I lose mouse and keyboard functionality. Everything ive seen online is all about getting stuck on it, im not. It get to the part that asks what language you want and I cant move my mouse or use my keyboard. I saw thing about plug it into a usb 2.0 port because windows 7 doesnt have usb 3.0 drivers right out of the box, but my motherboard doesnt have any 2.0 ports. I tried plugging a junk port into one of the usb 2.0 slots on the motherboard, but still no go. Only other thing to try would be a ps/2 mouse and keyboard, but I have neither.

In general yes. That should be the easiest way to solve the problem. A bit more googling should turn up more complicated methods to install Win7 USB drivers.

You don't have to connect it to the net to install updates. Win7 comes with it own set of preset drivers that naturally install to give your motherboard basic functionality. These drivers are not installed and are being blocked. Hence why your USB ports aren't working. Your windows 7 isn't download new updates to block you out. It simply doesn't install even the basic drivers due to the new CPUs.

It has unfinished drivers. It has HBM. It draws a ton of power for some reason. The chance of surprise buttsex against 1080 ti is not out of the question if you consider AMD's track record. RX 480 started off as a piece of shit barely better than a 970 and now it's actually pretty good and better than a 980 ti. At least it would be pretty good if you could get one for what they were originally sold at. If not for the mining craze they would have come down in price and would have been the go to mainstream card for a while now.

Use a mouse and onscreen keyboard for now. When you can access W7, go and download the USB drivers for W7 and then you can use the USB 3.0 ports on your motherboard and plug in your keyboard. Read >>62059984
and scroll down to the USB driver part.

The issue now is W7 not having drivers automatically and you can't install them due to your lack of mouse/keyboard. Shouldn't be an issue once you get USB drivers installed.

My dad's PC has pretty decent specs (4590 & 980Ti) but is deathly slow because it uses a HDD. He uses botnet 10 and whenever something breaks and I have to fix it, it's the absolute worst thing on the entire planet waiting 45 minutes for windows to start-up and shut down and run updates and such.

I've never run a system with combined SSD + HDD storage before so sorry if it's a stupid question, but simply installing the OS to a cheap 32GB SSD will fix all this, right? Like it would start-up, shutdown and run updates just as fast as if it only had an SSD?

Good PSU's can often draw more than they are rated at for a while without issue. There's no reason you can't use a 550W PSU in a system pulling precisely 550W.

Do dual monitor setups usually lag? I got a 1080 gtx yesterday (upgrade from a 970) and got a 144hz monitor as well (VG248 from Asus). Now I kept my old monitor as well (s24c300) that runs 60hz max. Im connected on the 144hz screen with a dvi and the samsung with an hdmi cable. The issue is that whenever i transfer windows between screens or just shake/resize the windows i get a ton od lag and the cpu usage goes to about 50% (i5 6600k). If I dont do anything its fine. I have the latest drivers and all that jazz. Ive also tried setting hz to 120 to match the 60hz but it only helps a little bit and the lag is still noticable. Anyone know have an idea of whats going on?
