Really want to get into game design and shit? Learn C++, and make a sourcemod. The Source SDK 2013 is free to play around with. It's quite easy to set up and work with. Only issues is that Valve neglect it, and it hasn't recieved any updates bar security fixes.

I'm actually surprised HTML5 didn't replace all those flash games from the 00's. Compared to Newgrounds hey-day, you don't see anywhere as many amatuer projects in HTML5 that aren't portfolio bait.

It's the lack of tools more than anything else.

The animators don't know how to code the tools for the job and the coders don't care about creating tools to create animations.

It's sad really, but it's an area where open source still needs to catch up to 2003 standards.
