is ext4 performance good on SSDs?

zfs

On SSDs all filesystems perform about the same. Use ext4 or XFS, I do not recommend using btrfs it will likely never be finished and stable and the things it adds are useless anyway.

I second this, but not for the reasons mentioned. DAX is soon going to be a thing, and only ext4 and xfs will be able to support it.

Also, make sure that you set your block size to the same as your page size.

What about the journal? Wouldn't it cause unnecessary wear on the SSD?
>>
>>62015838
If you run a file hosting service for hundreds of thousands of users using a consumer-end SSD, then yes. If you use write to your disk with normal use, then that's not going to be an issue.

BSD FFS. Just because I don't like the name ext4.

It's only one guy. But yeah, Randall's a cuck.

I'm using btrfs on this system just to try it out.
lzo compression saves a lot of space, especially when you have lots of source code from emerging.

Other than that I don't use any of their features.
It's been pretty stable for half a year now.

I'm going to be building a new linux server soon, and I was wondering what filesystem I should use. Previously I've just used defaults, and not put much thought into it. Can anyone give some recommendations?

Bring it on.

/boot - ext2
Everything else - XFS

The reason why /boot needs to be ext2 is because the boot partition can't be xfs and you don't need journaling for it.

Run F2FS as it's made specifically for flash based storage and now a days is very stable.
