Okay /g/, I recently broke my beloved Galaxy S7 edge from a meter high drop (THE FIRST AND ONLY DROP IT HAD!). It was a really good phone and introduced me to the world of Android, unfortunately, I currently don't have the funds for a replacement in the same price range.

I am currently eyeing on a Moto G5 Plus which seems to be the current best mid range budget phone on the market, among tech sites at least. Is there a better phone than it in the same price range or is the Moto G5 plus really the current best. I'm in the US on T-mobile.

It's not hardware related and I would prefer avoid creating a Reddit account to ask this but, does anyone know how to stop Messenger from downloading the snapchat-like update by itself ?
Messenger lite doesn't work well on my device, so I tried the classic Messenger app.
50mb from the play store and perfect interface (no meme bubble or story selfie shit), but it actually downloaded a lot of data to basically update itself.
Is there a way to prevent this and stay on the "stock" version ?
>>
>>62011507
While its not truly free, IMO the best compromise while still being practical is just buying a phone you can easily unlock the bootloader and root.
Install something transparent like LineageOS and just dont install Gapps.
Use Fdroid instead
>>
Has anyone bought a siswoo before?

I don't know what they're doing but it's not selling phones to paying customers.

Buy the global version that has B20
>>
>>62013928
He's true. Ideally a lithium ion battery shouldn't be charged at more than 0.7c, so your typical 3000mAh battery at 3.8V should not be charged faster than 8 Watts/h. Quick charge 3.0 is pumping 18 Watts of power into your battery.

Most people would be fine though, only people who use their phone for more than 1-2 years would start to notice the degrading battery life depending on how much they use their phone and how frequently they charge it.

Is the Galaxy Note 4 the last good phone with a removable battery?
>>
>>62015814
>>62015860
>Performance
You can do video editing on phones now, emulate GameCube, PS1, n64, PSP, etc

>Photography
Newer phones have much better cameras than phones that are 3 years old

>Features
Waterproofing for example

>Old phone has died
You wouldn't buy another 1+1 if yours is dead, you'd buy something newer and better.

>Battery life
Newer phones are more efficient as last much longer than phones from around the 1+1 era

The list goes on, there's no real point in upgrading so often but I'd say every 2 years would be nice.
>>
>>62015913

I mean if you're doing video editing fair enough. What circumstance requires you to do that on a phone though? Like, when are you isolated from your PC, but really need to edit a video?

Photography I guess. It's just weird that like.... the note 4 which is what I have has a pretty good camera. And I'd think if you cared much you'd want a proper pro camera. Wouldn't a better phone camera just be more middle ground?

Waterproof ye.

If my phone died I'd get another Note 4 honestly.

Battery life, I haven't looked into so I'll take your word for it. More battery would be nice and I can see why that would be important for people.
>>
>>62015968
Well I mean my current phone can use interpolation to create 960fps videos even after they've been recorded so it's usually more for fun than productivity.

I went from a Nexus 5 to a Zuk Z2 Pro and I'm so happy with how big of an upgrade it has been.

I can emulate PSP games between 30-60fps, much better camera, battery went from 3-4 hours SoT to 7-8 hours SoT, my apps stay open in the background so it doesn't reload when I'm multitasking, the type C plug is easier to use and transfers faster.

Phone cameras are just convenient, it's already on you so may as well use get something that's good if you want to use it.

To be completely honest though, my main reason for upgrading was the battery life. Being conservative would net me almost 4 hours SoT on my nexus 5, but my Z2 Pro gets almost 6 hours SoT playing PSP games on high brightness and between 7-8 on normal usage with moderate to high brightness
>>

hi /g/, I'm going to Japan on a year long study abroad in a few weeks. I use a Galaxy S5 on AT&T but I've dropped it so many times it's just shy of being a paperweight.

I'd like to contract and get a new phone I can bring back to use in California (probably on AT&T), what are some recommendations? Feature wise I'd like to be able to root it but I'm not very savvy, I pretty much just install titanium and remove most of the bloatware, but I know japanese phones always make a shutter click when taking photos, so can that be removed with a root as well?

I'm about as phone savvy as Chihaya.

Why not just get a phone in the US?
>>
>>62017739
Once you use it it's hard to get out.

My car dock has an NFC sticker in it, when I put my phone in the holder it automatically opens my radar detector app (required for it to work, interfaces to the master box & radar detector horn in the hood of my car via bluetooth), my GPS app, and my music app and starts playing. I have a second sticker near the door of my car and I run my phone over it as I exit, it quits all of those apps.

NFC is useful for electronic payment, if you own Nintendo systems you can write your own NFC stickers for a quarter each rather than buying Nintendo's $13 action figures for extra content, etc...

You might not have a use but missing NFC is a huge con for a lot of people.

Well, I was hoping to get an Arrows or something. Maybe I've been memed on, but I'm of the understanding that Japanese market phones outperform American phones. I'm also under my parents' plan, so I have very little actual autonomy with contracting and upgrading and stuff.

I'm also an egotistical garbage can and I'd like to bring my "cool Japanese phone," back because, again, I am pondscum.

verizon and sprint will only activate phones with device IDs that have been certified as compatible. none of the jap phones have been certified. so they'll refuse to activate them and they won't work.

the 4G LTE part of the network uses sim cards, but the non-4G uses the ESN on CDMA, hence why blocking is possible.

>root
>unlock bootloader
>get TWRP
>flash Lineage from TWRP
Am I missing something here or is this the right procedure?
>>
>>62018637
okay so there are two parts here
>network
GSM is an international standard and 4G LTE is based on it. CDMA is a different standard. GSM used SIM cards, CDMA did not (until 4G LTE). Verizon and Sprint use CDMA. a lot of phones in Japan use CDMA too.

if you buy a japanese phone that is more CDMA based, depending on the software, it may not even be able to be activated on an american network by manufacturer restriction. if CDMA based, it may not support all GSM frequencies on, say, AT&T and verizon

>frequencies
different modems and phones support different frequencies. even if you buy a 4G LTE supporting phone from Japan, and then bring it to a 4G LTE network on the US, it might not work.

say you wanted to activate a phone on AT&T in the US. AT&T uses bands 2, 4, 5, and 17. let's say you buy a phone from NTT DoCoMo in Japan, and they use bands 1, 6, 9, and 19. note that there is ZERO overlap between the two, meaning if the NTT DoCoMo phone doesn't happen to support the other bands, thedn you're hosed on using it on AT&T's network.

I'm not sure why you'd want a Japanese phone as their add on software is generally garbage. Japan is really behind and their software feels like software 10-20 years older in terms of consumer devices.

Almost all of Europe uses a mix of bands 3, 7 and 20 for LTE coverage. The 4 Prime has 3 and 7 but is missing band 20 (800mhz). Band 20 is used mainly for 1. providing coverage in rural areas 2. improving signal strength indoors (this might be different for your country / carrier though). So in most places you'd be still be able to get LTE, but in some you might drop down to 3G, where a phone with band 20 would still get LTE.

>>
>>62020638
The same reason people buy ~3000 Gibson guitars when they'd get the performance and quality out of any $800-1000 guitar by a respectable brand. Flagships sell because of the name and the false illusion of worth and prestige people get when they have something expensive that most people they know don't have.
>>
>>62020638
I got myself a Galaxy A5 after losing my S6 and I've been real happy with it. Most aesthetic phone on the market (in black), IP68, good performance, and battery life seems to be improving, never giving below 5h SoT total, and today I got just over 7h. 4G only

So does my $700 Jackson, and my friend's $900 PRS. Low and medium end guitars don't necessarily have to look like shit unless you get something like an absolute entry level $120 turd. And I'd argue that most brands and especially Gibson go way overboard with aesthetics in their really expensive models.
>>
>>62020731
This is true. It's actually kinda sad, here where I live it's Samsung and iPhone territory. The amount of people that get indebted to buy the latest meme phone is ridiculous. The average idiot is drawn by big numbers and they can't resist when they see WOW 4GB RAM AND 8 CORES THIS SHIT IS AMAZING.
I got myself a G4 recently which is marginally less expensive in comparison to the bigger brands, and it serves me just fine. I'm willing to bet 99% of people with top spec phones don't even use them to a fraction of what they're able to, they just want to carry the latest fad in their pockets. As long as they run Normiebook and WhatsApp they couldn't care less about anything else.

>I'm willing to bet 99% of people with top spec phones don't even use them to a fraction of what they're able to
Anyone who could perform the tasks required to truly push the flagship hardware to its limits is not going to do those things on a fucking phone, they have real computers for that kind of work.

For the average user who only uses a smartphone as a facebook, internet, youtube and media device, and that's 99.9% of people, any smartphone over 200 bucks is overkill.

Expect sub-$200 phones still have pretty shit cameras, which is something that the average social media using normie absolutely cares about. Gotta take those snapchat selfies and videos.

The camera on any $150-200 phone is more than good enough for that kind of photography

Moving from the Nexus 6 I have had since release, I am considering either going for the Samsung S8+ (possibly exynos variant) or the LG V30 if the rumors of it having Wireless charging is true as well as root.

Which one sounds better? The S8+ or V30?

Exactly, that was my point.
It makes me wonder what the people here with phones with seven bajillion GBs of RAM and cores even use them for. Mine is a quadcore 2GB RAM and it rarely has to reload anything, and when it does it's so fast and inconsequential it doesn't even matter. Any big task requiring the processing power of the latest phones is better off being done in a proper computer in the end.
The one thing I can imagine the very best phones being used for is running Dolphin on the bus or some shit, and you and I know that only happens for power users. This is why I get irrationality upset when I see normies walking around with the latest Galaxy S8000 Plus Ultra Turbo and use it to browse social media and videos and nothing else.

>>62021896
Point taken, I don't give a rat's ass about photography, so that probably makes me biased to be completely indifferent about good cameras on a phone, but you get the idea.

No shit, fucknugget, that doesn't mean that one to whom money is no object should ignore the fact that flagships smartphones are garbage, mostly thanks to shit battery life and tumourous camera bumps

>>

Marketing at its finest. The technology is there so why not make super expensive phones with it and let people convince themselves that they need it.

Flagship phones made sense in the beginnings of the smartphone era, but nowadays the low and medium end are perfectly fine for most people. And seeing how the hardware isn't advancing as fast as it did in the beginning (and there really isn't any selling point for these phones other than their specs), the gap between the 200-300 dollar models and the flagships will get smaller

Australian pricing is fucked to begin with. A Samsung S8+ is almost 1400aud and budget models are roughly on par with chink flagships.

That's my main reason for going with this and not a Redmi for half the price or a regular flagship for twice the price.

I have considered that, however I take pretty good care of my devices. Fuck I still have a Nexus 4 with no cracked back.

Plus if I need to the S8+ has plenty of cases for protection. At this point I am just worried about which one will get decent custom rom support and what has wireless charging since I have invested in the technology around the household.

>For the average user who only uses a smartphone as a facebook, internet, youtube and media device, and that's 99.9% of people, any smartphone over 200 bucks is overkill.
What you say is true, but processing power is not even a third of the full picture: without counting the camera, since it has already been mentioned, smartphones market segmentation also uses screen panels and overall design to differentiate the various tiers. A better screen produces a better user experience, since it's literally the first and only interface with the user; many people use smartphones for too much time a day, every single day of their lives, and a better screen does make the difference. Design is subjective, and it also is an umbrella term that accounts for ergonomics, overall build quality, and aesthetics: regardless the subjective nature of personal taste in the design, ergonomics should be taken into account when looking at a phone (S8's designers forgot that with the fingerprints sensor), and build quality can determine the durability and longevity of a smartphone; now it's true that price doesn't imply good design, but one may choose to spend more after evaluating what suited him the most also in terms of design.

My ideal phone would be something like the LG G6/V30, with less processing power and more energy efficiency, no dual camera meme, better AMOLED panel, and no stupid glass back, because I love that bezelless design. Too bad such design and build quality won't hit the midrange market for another few quarters, not even counting that midrange phones don't even have that bleeding edge displays, and I've waited too long already to change my phone so I'll probably take the V30 at day one, and also take a dick in the ass while paying it because I'm a huge fag.

My point is that processing power is a good selling point, but it isn't the whole story. As long as the market keeps its current structure, however, we'll have to stick with it being the main selling point.
>>
>>62023758
>Plus if I need to the S8+ has plenty of cases for protection
Which is just stupid: the main selling point of that slab of potential cracks is being without bezels, and any cover just negates it altogether. At which point, any other option is straight up better.
>>
>>62023869
>CPU
>main selling point
For people who know what "octa core" means, maybe. I was talking to my sister the other day about getting a new phone and the first thing she asked about the phone I had in mind was "but how many megapixels does the camera have?". Most people don't care about number of cores and CPU speed, they trust Samsung or Apple's marketing when it says that the new phone has the fastest processor in the market without specifying any numbers.

Nevermind the fact that more pixels does not mean better photos.
>>
>>62023985
>Most people don't care about number of cores and CPU speed, they trust Samsung or Apple's marketing when it says that the new phone has the fastest processor in the market without specifying any numbers.
It's still the main selling point, it's just not on a technical level: no manufacturer will forget to make the new flagship more powerful, and along with the CPU they will pack the very best they can offer. It just isn't possible for them to offer the very best screen without the very best CPU because otherwise they would hurt the rest of the lineup.
Also, there are enough normie-oriented videos that compare different smartphones by looking at the loading times of apps; that for me, and I think for most of us here, is beyond pants-on-head retarded for all the reasons in this world, but it still shows how normies *do* care about CPU and RAM performance without even knowing.

>Nevermind the fact that more pixels does not mean better photos.
True dat, but the pixel count war always works on laymen.
>>
>>62023869
It's all about "the processing power". Marketing spouts buzzwords to draw people in, people who have no idea what any of that shit is.
Recently I got a leaflet in my house from a home appliances and electronics store, big-ish chain here.
On it, it came advertised the Moto G4 among others. Now here's the kicker, it says it has an octacore, 3GB of RAM and 32 of ROM. You might be thinking, sure that's bullshit but it sounds kinda plausible at least. Well, turns out the model is the G4 Play, which not only has none of those specs and is marginally less powerful than the regular G4, but it's also not the model being advertised. But you think the average dingus will ever find out? No, no one cares unless you're a turbonerd like us. It's a miniscule difference that flies right over customers.
People see words like "Snapdragon" or Octacore or some inflated amount of camera MPs and they jump on that. The market for phones is exploitative to hell and back precisely because of this. This is why Sammysung and specially Apple have such a monopoly, they know which buzzwords to exploit to make the crowd go wild.
Nevermind those shitty chinese bricks like Xiaomi, OnePlus or Huawei, surely they can't possibly be good, or at least AS good, right? There's the why.
>>
Dunno how people can stand playing vidya on something like a SD625. For daily messaging use or whatever sure but for the SD650 in my memephone, playing Tales of The Rays is literally more loading screens than playing the game.
