should I be using an hdmi cable or mini displayport? I've heard conflicting opinions.
this is my monitor
DELL U2415 (1920x1200@59Hz)
I hear DisplayPort is superior as a spec. I doubt it'll matter for you.

displayport if you want 144 fps. HDMI can only goto to 60.
I believe with that low of specs, it doesnt matter

It doesn't matter (for that display).

jeez guys that was an expensive monitor, oh well

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
That doesn't mean its a bad monitor, I personally love the Dell U series. It's just that you don't need the extra features DisplayPort supports (4K/60Hz or 144Hz) as your screen doesn't have those features.

I personally use DP for gaming and HDMI for my other monitors. If you're gaming at 144hz, it needs to be DP. HDMI is fine for everything else. Plus depending on the type of HDMI Cable you use and if the device supports it, HDMI carries not only video and audio, but it can carry ethernet as well.

displayport. some monitors don't support HDMI @ 60Hz but if you buy the latest DP cable you'll be good for many years.
