What's a reliable/stable distro for college? I'm going in like a week for CS.

Devuan, definitely go for Devuan. Is stable and a with a lot of packages. All the tools you're gonna use are there and all the DEs you want.

The latest stable version of Debian or preferably latest Ubuntu LTS.
If you don't have Gentoo or Arch the profs will make fun of you and you won't be able to get any references for internships
I know one guy who got away with Debian but he was ranked really high in LoL so they let it slide
