How's 12" laptops for watching chinese cartoon?

I'm starting a new job, and I'm thinking of getting a X1C 5th gen with 16GB of RAM, 500GB SSD, and WQHD screen using the Corporate Perks discount for around $1400. I've heard the i7 throttles, so I think I'll opt for the i5-7300.

Is this not a smart time to buy a laptop because of the potential increase in overall cores that will be coming out with the next generation of Intel and/or AMD processors?
>>
>>61933800
Hopefully the T60 is the version that supports Libreboot, so I can install Gentoo and have the ultimate /g/ machine. The pastebin says the other two will support it by 2018 so for now I'll just Coreboot them with CloverOS on the T420 and Slackware on the X220.

I watch mine on an 8 inch tablet, so I'm sure 12 inches is great. The problem is the resolution, but 768p is fine given that most anime is 720.
>>
>>61935102

I doubt it would be an issue for me, except maybe with playback.
I was more concerned at the distance of which I can watch it from.
That's why I was contemplating the tablet version over the laptop version.

Fair enough, but a 1080p 14" laptop screen is better.

>>61934076
I find watching anime to be comfiest on tablets. The x220t seems to have some problems with the digitizer, so I would recommend the x230t
>>
>>61938207
>nearly the size of the 14" T-series
What?
>>61938240
>I find watching anime to be comfiest on tablets
This is what I'm after.
Do you fold it and rest it on your chest?
How's the digitizer?
>>
>>61938271
Not him but the digitizer is okay-ish. It's certainly not the best and I wouldn't do artwork with it (though it has been done)
It was made for note taking and it does this exeptionally well if you ask me.
>>
>>61938271
Why not just get a tablet then?
>>
>>61938516
Because a regular tablet is not a Thinkpad
>>
>>61938271
X230t dimensions: 305mm x 229mm x 31.3mm
T430 dimensions: 340.5mm x 232mm x 29.9mm

it's not as wide as the T430 but it has the same length and thickness, also the tablets are quite a bit bigger than the non-tablet and the tablet can only take a 6-cell battery while the non-tablet and T-series can get 9-cell batteries

it is not a tablet replacement, they are big and heavy
>>
>>61938538
So? You just want to watch cartoons, right?

>>61938271
I'm used to a Kindle Fire(Quite a bit lighter) but the weight doesn't seem too bad for the position you're referring to. When my arms start to burn from the lack of blood flow I just sit up a bit
The digitizer is sort of funky right out of the box. After calibration, it's a lot more accurate(There's a little dot that tells you where it's clicking anyhow)
The important thing about the tablet series is that they all come equipped with an IPS screen. Part of the reason why I chose the x230t is because when you factor in the price of an x220/30 with the price of buying an IPS display to swap in, the prices become a lot closer.
Oh, and in tablet form the screen rotates (I plan on using it to read Manga)
>>
>>61938538
a regular tablet can probably take more of a beating than an X-series tablet, the corners of the lid and palm rest are plastic and extremely prone to breaking, along with the rubber screen holders on the sides of the keyboard, it is very rare to find a used one which doesn't already have those things broken off
>>
>>61938516
Because of this >>61938538
and I want to have a proper OS, unless you know of a tablet that runs Linux.

>inb4 bait

>they don't have a rollcage
But they do.
>>
>>61938739
Nope. I just watched the disassembly of both x220 and x230. No roll cage was found
>>
>>61938739
Not really, the lid and chassis are magnesium but there's no metal under the palm rest and especially around the top edge of the screen where the wifi antennas are. My x230 has lasted through 5 years of daily abuse and grad school but it's got one chipped corner, cracked palm rest, some deep gouges in the soft touch coating, and I'm on the 2nd keyboard and battery.

But, chassis=/=roll cage. Also, The main Achilles heal is actually the palm rest and the lid, both of which could be protected with a roll cage.
>>
>>61939617
The chassis is the rollcage. The palmrest on my X200 does stick out a little from it, but not enough to see it damaged on a drop. As for the lid, it's completely surrounded with a metal frame.

I've been managed to flash my T430 BIOS with a modded one. Everything is OK. During the process, I tryed to put a custom boot logo, but all what I get is a black Screen (te BIOS work fine)

Anyone has a custom boot logo that I can use as an example for making my own?

Say my Thinkpad T420 had a fractured base: (both) the top of the base where the keyboard is and the bottom that sits on the desk.

How difficult would it be to swap the computer into a new base shell (top & bottom of base)? Where would I even get the parts? If you have any references, I'd really appreciate it.

>How difficult
2/10, you have to disassemble it entirely up to the rollcage. Not difficult at all if you follow the HMM.

>Where would I even get the parts?
Aliexpress, eBay or look for cheap broken t420 in good or decent cosmetic condition.
>>
>>61941985
no not really
>>
>>61941689
you could probably get parts on ebay, buy non working laptop with the part(s) you need.

You have to be careful when taking apart laptop and take your time, so that when you have to put it together you know what screws go where. There are a few vids of full disassembly of T420 on the web.

sorry i dont have the links on hand :^(
>>
>>61939934
>optical drive and AC adapter
Optical drive is cheap as shit so is AC adapter if you don't already own 5 lenovo ones. But yeah, no bios pic is a big nono. And his "enthusiasm" is laughable. Might be Computraced.

To be honest, $300 outright in that condition is still tempting. Okay ones never go for less than $1000. Really nice ones go for at least $1500. It really only seems like chassis damage, might be possible to just get a new chassis? Could one possibly salvage the bottom chassis off of a for-parts regular W700 and fix it up?

Should be around $250 to buy refurbished off Amazon or similar, but spend a few days on eBay and see where you get. I just got one for $61.

Is it worth doing a dual boot so I can use linux when I need to? I'd replace windows completely but I need it for some programs, and WINE never works for me.

What programs?

VM's are easier than dual-booting

Why can't this be Business Laptop General or Professional Laptop General?

Dual booting is quite the experience if you're new to GNU/Linux.

Not really, a 5 minute YouTube instructional video should suffice

not at all
most installers will do everything for you to dual boot nowadays.
just dont use arch and you'll be fine.

Alright guys, I need some help.

I recently found an A22M in the dump.
I took it apart, cleaned it out, but while cleaning, I fucked up what I believe to be a lid position sensor.
The housing broke and a mini spring flew out, which no where to be found.
I remember this thing depressed into the housing, which I believe makes it the lid position sensor (when depressed it detects that the lid is closed)

However, now that I cleaned it, the display won't turn on.
It turns on through the VGA port though.

Maybe I can short some of the connectors on the sensor on the motherboard with a wire, to trick it into believing the lid is closed.
Pic related is the sensor.
