Just think of windows as a worse distro and compile the stuff you need.
I am sure there are hacks to get it to be useful.
After all, many people use it.

If that don't work, ask them about whether they are willing to get you a computer with Linux on it (don't say gnu, you appear like a crusader)
Or if you are allowed to bring your own device.

They may have good reasons to why they want windows. Eg, to make sure it works on windows or something and in that case, suck it up and get as much of your work tools back as you can.
