>>

Yeah, I wasn't even thinking about games when I bought them, although I obviously do play games on them sometimes. I mostly just thought that they looked cool and thought that it'd be cool to hook my VCRs and stuff up to them. I wish I could hook one up to my computer, but I haven't figured out if there's a way to. For some reason I've been having a hard time finding a computer CRT for cheap, which really makes me regret getting rid of the ones I had.

yeah, those are only going to get rarer (especially the pro models that have a rep)

There has to be an easy way to connect those PVMs to the computer though, whether a PCI extension or an external converter.
>>
>>61925631
The only Power Macs I can think of that were infamously loud were the mirror-drive-door G4 and all variants of the G5. The rest of them are fairly well-behaved. I like the 9600 because it can take up to 1.5GB of RAM, and G4 upgrade cards up to 1GHz, IIRC.

I'm working on a swap meet style site to preserve old tech. Focus would be on having a place where you could find a person to donate to instead of landfilling, or swap with someone else, or sell for money (but just purely selling wouldn't be the encouraged focus)

http://www.hotscripts.com/listing/iscripts-eswap-online-swapping-platform-software/

Something like that but with also location options and maybe a way to show your 'collection' of old tech and which items are up for donation / swapping / sale.

Be a good way to keep stuff out of landfills, maybe we'd get a community of people to help preserve stuff, possibly even get some custom firmware hacks for things to keep them going into the future.

Any /g/entlemen able to dev stuff like this? I'd rather pay one of us than a pajeet from hotscripts

I got mine a year ago for 50€, with box, changer, etc. Just for fun and testing.

Exact opposite, I wan't to get rid of at least five of 8" PVM's, but am too cheap to sell them for peanuts, since none of them have more than 100 hours of usage. Same thing with several 21" PVM's, don't remember exact models, but they are all manufactured in 1995.

I prefer the 14" models, for example 14M2*'s, four of which I've used for 15 years and counting.

Large percentange of my Japanese animation laserdisks have rotted and last year I threw maybe 50 or so titles to trash, because the video had corrupted too much.

And it's not old, especially not in the sense of deprecation, if there is nothing to replace it. Laserdisk have been properly replaced both DVD and Blurays, so that doesn't deserver any attention, especially when majority of titles that were skipped on DVD, are now available on Bluray.
>>
>>61936039
Neat? Then buy one, they go for dollari or less just about anywhere, if you don't mind some nasty smoky plastic.
>>
>>61936410
>I wan't to get rid of at least five of 8" PVM's, but am too cheap to sell them for peanuts, since none of them have more than 100 hours of usage
Define peanuts. Low hours and mint condition is great, but they're only 8" which makes them a tough sell.

>Same thing with several 21" PVM's, don't remember exact models, but they are all manufactured in 1995.
Those should be worth quite a bit more if in good shape, but they have the issue of being huge and expensive to ship. I'd love to have one but I don't think I'd ever trust having one shipped.

>>
>>61936208
Nah, A/UX doesn't even like a lot of Quadras and the most accessible option is probably a 650, and those sure as hell aren't getting any younger. OS X isn't going to run well at all on NuBus Power Macs or other early systems that you'll have to frankenstein out with upgrades just to boot it on, and OS X isn't a SysV either or remotely anything like what A/UX was.
>having A/UX on latter powerpc hardware would be retarded compared to what specs it's meant to run on, you don't need such power for A/UX
What kind of thinking even is this? A/UX 3.1.x was a pretty formidable system that chokes a lot of boxes on the compatibility list, and even if it wasn't, why is having a more powerful system to run it on "retarded"? People ran fucking MS-DOS on Pentiums, SysV platforms like Solaris and IRIX were toaster-grade but ran on incredibly powerful hardware, you're running more than just the operating system when you use a computer, after all.
>>
>>61936470
By the way, VIC-20 was my first computer, still has it and it still works, as do the Commodore cassette deck (which I used - and use - with C64 too: just like today, I was too cheap to buy 1541).
>>
>>61936497
huh, what happens if one breaks? Is Oracle still pulling support or is it just EOL ware that you're just supporting internally?
>>
>>61936516
>Nah
A/UX does not like a lot of 68k Macs, it almost likes all Quadras though, specially because they have compatible CD ROM drives.
>>
>>61936479
Less than hundred bucks. Especially when those are the only PVM's for which I've payed any money (the seller was university, which had never used them or even unboxed them and for this reason some big shot demanded more than a token price to be paid).
The 21" ones have at least 10000 hours in each, but brightness is still high and exteriors are mint.

>It looks fantastic and like a respectable piece of equipment
The 20th Anniversary Macintosh is an odd piece of hardware to characterize like that. The screen module looks like some dystopian jukebox propaganda monolith. Lain's designers actually improved on its IRL look. Older and later Macs have both had a equally or more pro look without the telescreen weirdness.

Dell L800CXE Panorama.jpg

Dell Dimension L800CXE (2001). Got her 16 years ago, right before the XP release. Came preloaded with Win ME, quickly installed Win 98SE in it's place. Sadly, last week the stock psu died, I could smell it burning. Visual inspection of the inside of the case showed no damage so hopefully all parts escaped harm. Ironically, after being stored away in mothballs for 8-9 years she only lasted that week Specs:
Celeron 800mhz (Socket 370)
Ram 384mb
HDD: 40GB
24x CD-RW/40x cd-rom drive
Iomega Zip 100
Floppy
Graphics - 3dfx Voodoo 3 2000 pci (Pulled from old Aptiva system before I sold it)

Back then, Dell, really fucked with the atx wiring, the dell psu 20 pin main connector & aux connector aren't wired to standard ATX Spec so you can't throw in a new psu from newegg and expect it to work. If you do, you'll only fry the mobo/components. So I did some hunting and some bright folks made a adapter cable that fixes the fucked up Dell hack job. So now you can use any old psu you like along with a new case cause the existing case won't take a new psu

Not him, but what I would love to see is a retro thread/board/whatever where people created things using old technology. Gopher sites, 3D graphics made in the original 3D Studio prototype, ports of Perl 5.16 to old-ass Unix, brand new Windows 3.11 and Atari ST software, stuff like that. There is some of this going on on the Interweb, but it's all clustered by system. There is no one big "do cool shit with old tech" place.

I helped an industrial music artist put out a fake leak of their album in order to fuck over pirate distributors. I still had contacts in what.cd at the time. It was horrible versions of every single track, with accurate lengths.

I still have the tracks. It was absolutely hilarious. No one remembers now and I can't find anything about it on google (artist was Faderhead) so maybe I should re-release the fake album, lol

What's a good CPU cooler to get for a socket 370 Pentium III? I have the Intel cooler and it's ridiculously loud. I want a cooler that is as quiet as possible while effectively cooling the CPU.

I see a lot of generic copper heatsinks with holes for mounting a 50 or 60mm fan, but I don't know if a Noctua fan will move enough air. My CPU has a max TDP of 30w so it shouldn't take much.
>>
>>61942914
Socket A coolers will mount on Socket 370. At least as long as they don't need the bolt-down holes in the mobo, or all three socket lugs on each side. There should still be places with new old stock of generic Socket A heatsinks. Fancy overclocker's sinks will need some hunting though.
>>
>>61943305
I don't want to overclock, just want something quiet. The Intel fan is ridiculously loud
>>
>>61943380
Socket A sinks were when they started to use 80mm fans, and even a dead silent 80 will move more air than the 50mm fan on the Intel sinks from that period. Even if you aren't overclocking the same principle applies, a big sink can shift the same heat with less noise.
