/g/ I need your help.

>agree to make app for small business owned by friend of a friend of a friend
>he's a contractor he wants the app to collect data and create estimates for client
>pretty simple will probably take me a few weeks to do
>his business did about 1m in sales last year

a) How much do I charge him

b) How much would a professional app company charge for this

c) Should I charge him hourly or agree on a lump sum up front

d) Should I ask for money up front

Don't let me down /g/uys

Why not ask a contractor yourself? Then just use their prices
>>
>>61911481
>A- Price
Average rates for specialists go for $30/h.
>B- The rest
A professional company can provide lower rates due to having more monkeys to program.
>C) hourly or sum
Provide him both alternatives offer a per hour charge or offer him a a 48h Value payment( ie: he pays for the entire time of your work despite you spending more or less then 48 hours to make it)

>D- Money up front
If you feel like he's going to weasel out on you I'd ask for a small deposit of 2 hours work.
>>
>>61911690
>48h value payment
I don't understand, can you explain more about this?
>>
>>61911481
is this what freedom looks like?
>>
>>61911749
It's a fixed price for your work imagine you work 6 hours a day, that's 8 days of work that's a fixed price you defined that won't change no matter how long you take to finish it for example at $30/h that price would be $1440+Tax.

The difference between this and an hourly rate is that the longer you take to make the program the more you earn however you lose out on future prospects if you take too long because it will be "too expensive" for the client.
>>
>>61911786
so it's a lump sum that doesn't change regardless of hours, is what you're saying?

do you think that's better for me or him?
>>
idiot do equity payment and become a shareholder
>>
>>61912338
yeah i'm gonna take nothing but equity in a business relying on an independent freelance dev. sounds promising
>>
>>61911690
Lol. $30/hr? Do you live in Poland or something? I charge $150/hr or $1500/day for short-term projects like this. The lowest I've gone was $75/hr for a multi-year project.

If this is iOS programming he can definitely charge my rates.
>>
>>61913051
it's only android, and its a very simple app. just database stuff and building a PDF. his co did 1m in sales last year what do you think?
>>
>>61911481
Set a rate and charge that.
Hourly is fine, but agree on how many hours is expected, eg agree on a minimum amount of hours.
Eg, say you want to work on this full time (40h /week) and you estimate it will take a month to complete.
Then if things change (they add to what should be solved etc) then this estimate could be increased.
If they are friends of yours you might feel like it is unnecessary to write it all down, but do so.
And if you expect to do more freelance, write a latex template for yourself so you can easily generate a contract.
If you need legal help making one, your local workers union is usually ready to help (if you are a member)
>>
Hourly is best. If you charge on commission, he can string you along indefinitely if he doesn't like something and leverage your payment for more
>>
>>61913685
in order to combat this I've seen some people add a "support" fee (usually it only applies after a grace period that starts when you delivering the product).
>>
>>61911481
That place fucking sucks.

The right thing to do would be to:
1) Come up with an estimated amount of hours to complete the project, then double that.
2) Present that estimate to the client along with an hourly rate, contingent on their approval of a specification, with the understanding that the estimate may change when the spec is written.
3) If they agree, write a quick spec and put more thought into the hours, then double the hours. If they're different than before tell the client.
4) Get them to sign off on the spec, with the understanding that any changes once development starts will cost more. However, make it clear that you are charging hourly, and not based on the project cost.

At that point begin working on it. Give weekly time updates to the client so they know you're in line with the estimates. If you are going to go over let them know asap, but still charge them.
