Reminder that most Android SOCs have been doing hardware VP9 decoding for several generations now. I was kind of disappointed when I did vdpauinfo on my RX 470 to find that no, it can't do VP9 - but they finally got HEVC hardware decoding (again, years after it became a standard on Android SOCs).

Though the perhaps "nice" detail is that I am guessing they could use the same code to give "hybrid" partial hardware acceleration on older GPUs too.

This GPU isn't great, but at least it's not Nvidia. If it weren't for the cryptocurrency climate, this release would have been hammered far worse than it is being in the tech press. It is hotter and less efficient than the direct competition, but the market is just so GPU starved right now that anything new and relatively powerful is welcome. If Vega 56 can be had at or near MSRP it'd be a decent gaming card. I've always been team red so I'll probably buy one in a few months if prices seem sensible by then.
