Why are AMD so good at making bad products?

Low R&D budget

I get that Vega 64 is a little underwhelming for gaming in some titles but come on now.

AMD can have ONE good product.
Their CPUs sucked so their GPUs were allowed to be good.
Now their CPUs are good, so time to the GPUs to get the waterboarding.

By the time drivers get refined and Vega 64 is clearly beating a 1080 Volta will come out and it will be a moot point. How the hell did AMD mess this up so badly?

You aren't seeing consumer Volta until Q2 2018 at the earliest.

Maybe if some YouTube jerkoff could actually ask RTG if the memory bandwidth issues are fixable with BIOS updates, we could actually have some idea of WTF is up with Vega 10.
>>
>>61901570
Someone should ask RTG when the fuck will they enable prim shaders.
This is getting silly.
>>
>>61901570
Bandwidth isn't the problem. Dsbr is enabled and it performs worse than Vega FE even though dsbr uses bandwidth more efficiently by 30%
>>

>>61901642
>Bandwidth isn't the problem.
Yes it is. Everyone who managed to succeed in OC'ing Vega 56 found GPU clock increases did almost nothing while gains were had linearly with memory OC.
>>
>>61901667
What changes is probably latency. Like I said dsbr is enabled but performance hasn't changed. Dsbr effectively increases bandwidth because you need less
>>
>>61901667
Of course clocking the core higher will do nothing.
The front-end is chocking.
Also of course OCing 56 memory will give perf, since it's HBM2 is clocked only at 800mhz and its still 3.5K ALU card.
>>
>>61900755
>Peak

$0.02 have been deposited into your leather jacket account
>>
>>61901690
>>61901694
Vega 56 will tie Vega 64 Air in every test if you get Vega 56's HBM2 to 945mhz.

DSBR might be enabled but who knows how well its working. And I won't believe its even turned on until someone runs the triangles test to prove its on.
>>
>>61901714
DSBR unchoked back-end. Now they need prim shaders to unchoke front-end.
>>
>>61901714
AMD posted slides before and it said it reduces bandwidth usage by up to 30%. So it uses only 70% the bandwidth it would need without dsbr, if you invert that means 140% effective bandwidth
>>
>>61901774
It's 30% on average.
>>
>>61901800
Ok, so Vega RX should have 140% higher performance in average, but it doesnt. Clearly something else is at play when overclocking memory
>>
>>61901752
>prim shaders
Not going to help as much as you'd think.
>>
>>61901879
Oh, it will.
>>61901870
Guess what other uarch-defining feature Vega introduces?
>>
>>61901892
How much do you think prim. shaders would help? Can't imagine much more than 5-10%.
>>
>>61901690
DSBR is enabled. HBCC and primitive shaders are still disabled.
>>
>>61900755
> have utterly shit performing launch drivers yet again
> factory overclocks for everyone!

Holy shit, I've solved this impenetrable mystery.
If AMD could just get software performance up 20% at launch instead of 18 months later, they could sell 20% lower clocked parts that consumed 40% less power and would actually overclock well.

Buying an AMD card at launch is an exercise in frustration.
>>
>>61901904
More. Fiji's main problem was fucking pipeline stalls due to front-end choking full of overdrawn triangles.
Prim shaders are an elegant solution to the problem, but it needs driver work.

>>61900755
what makes the card draw so much power?
>>
>>61901944
4 THOUSAND FUCKING ALU.
4 FUCKING
THOUSAND.
THATS A WHOLE LOT.
>>
>>61901944
Better question would be, why does it perform so badly with that die size and power consumption?
>>
>>61901957
whats an ALU, im from /v/ excuse me
>>
>>61901944
It can't use a loo, i.e. discard triangles efficiently, and has to shit on the street instead. As was to expected from a GPU designed by a Pajeet.
>>
>>61901967
Perhaps you should read the fucking thread for once.

>MUH GAYMZ
>>
>>61902117
Neither does nvidia's approach.
Full tiling is viable only for mobile GPUs.
>>
>>61901957
Why does ALU count matter suddenly?
AMD cards had more cores than nvidia since like GTX4xx/HD5xxx times, possibly even before that.

Also you don't know much if you think ALU count is directly related to power usage.
>>
>>61900755
POO
>>
>>61902115
It's OK anon, I can wait.
That's not exactly an exiting buy.
Going from Crossfire rx480, I'll basically loose performance for more power.
It's just that I'll be able to play games at 4K that don't support crossfire now.
>>
>>61902180
(please be bait)
You do understand than everything pre-7000 series was VLIW?

>>
>>61901917
>HBCC
Didn't AMD show it working? Why would it be disabled? Or by trying to make DSBR work they accidentally broke it?
>>
>>61901917
Hbcc only helps when data storage is an issue though, which means only 4k

>>
Who gives a fuck? Nobody plays video games anymore.
>>
>>61901934
They can't though, because they're incompetent Pajeets. They're more than a year late with these levels of performance and STILL didn't have drivers ready. Things will never change until Raja and the Currymen are all fired.
>>
>>61902444
You mean Chinamen. The fiji/polaris/Vega team is in Beijing, part of AMD's Chinese branch. No idea where Navi's branch is located but they said it's not the same team as the Vega team. Raja heads the entire division
>>
>>61900755
I think Vega 56 from third parties will be an interesting product.

lol did anyone read the computerbase article?
basically most vega functions are still disabled in the drivers...
> Definitely not finished are the drivers. The Draw Stream Binning Rasterizer (DSBR) is apparently still finished in the last second, but the High Bandwith Cache Controller (HBCC) is still switched off by default and Primitive Shaders are missing completely. And these are new features, which AMD has been advertising a great deal months ago.

you'd think with all that ryzen money they could afford a few extra programmers for their driver team
>>
>>61902563
The driver team needed to be staffed over a year before launch, not last month.

"FineWine" = cheaping out on pre-launch driver development
