Uh..how exactly is this operating system better if it's

Uh..how exactly is this operating system better if it's using 10 gigabytes of ram and all that I have open is a terminal and a damn web browser?
>inb4 he bought a mac
Never bought one, just borrowing my friends.
>>
>>61894482
because you're smart enough to ssh into your computer, but dumb enough to not know how to sort htop by memory usage so that we can see that you are probally running opera or another browser that has a terrible memory leak.

either that or you have a million tabs open.
>>
>>61894482
Because unused RAM is wasted RAM. macOS is very aggressive about caching and preloading apps.
>>
>>61894482
> Uh
> Never bought one, just borrowing my friends.
Ok, ok, now post Illya.
>>
>>61894482
*nix systems cache a lot of previously used stuff to reuse it later. Rather than loading information and then deleting it later certain stuff is saved just in case the need arises to use it again.

This appears to be mostly cached ram. its nothing to worry about, it is freed up on a FIFO basis as needed.

>>61894539
this.
>has a terrible memory leak.
>either that or you have a million tabs open.
possibly this, but nothing on your display would seem to suggest that
>>
>>61894482
now sort by memory usage retard
>>
>>61894528
Nope just have firefuck open with 3 tabs, /g/, my college's website and youtube. Also not SSH'd into the machine.
>>
>>61894711
thanks for sorting memory usage. 2 people already told you to do it. Now here's your third
>>
>>61894711
firefuck is the memory leak
>>
>>61894711
ya, what your looking at is this:
>>61894539
>>61894648

on most *nix systems the more you do on it the more ram it will show cached/used

try
sudo purge

or
sudo echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

Never again shall I complain about gnome shell using too much ram.
>>
>>61894731
Can't be, I turned the machine off, but before that I closed firefuck and it only freed up 2gbs of ram, obviously something else is going on with my friend's machine.

maybe he just has a bunch of shit installed on that machine and its doing god knows what
>>
>>61894735
I will later, I am on my personal laptop now. It doesn't lag or stutter, just bout shit a brick when I saw how much ram was being consumed.

I would make fun of you for your extreme generalization but it's the most accurate statement you could make when describing issues like this on such a closed system like a mac. Second only to windows, mostly for different reasons.
>>
>>61894813
Who knows, it doesn't stutter or anything, just shat a brick when I opened up htop on it and saw that.
Compared to mine >>61894749 at-least. lol
>>
>>61894482
Mactoddlers will defend this.
>>
>>61894528
Because macOS reads RAM usage differently than other OSs.

It's telling you "memory pressure", which is (from what I've been told) something sort of like prefetch.

It's basically putting a shitload of files in cache so you can retrieve it more quickly than pulling it from your storage medium.
>>
>>61894947
so bascially this: >>61894813

a bunch of software is installed and its doing god knows what
>>
>>61894947
is it possible to disable that? The machine has a fucking SSD in it, no need to be prefetching.
>>
>>61894979
no
>>
>>61895019
Right, his machine is going in the drink then.

Install gentoo.

Seriously, anything would be a massive upgrade over bloatOS, even Windows.
>>
>>61894979
Type sudo purge into the terminal, but only if your SSD is faster than your RAM.

(It's not.)
>>
>>61895048
>condescending chink picture with greentext
>>
>>61894979
>the machine has a fucking a SSD in it
Retard alert. Fetching from an SSD is still a factor of 1000 times slower than reading from ram
>>
>>61895091
but to even read into ram in the first place it needs to read from ssd.

and if he doesnt use every piece of memory that was read from the ssd to precache, then it is wasting time.
>>
>>61895112
>why do CPUs have cache?
>>
>>61895135
umm cpus have a small amount of cache (generally less than 12mb) to store a stack of information for the short term?
>>
>>61895173
Now expand that concept to RAM and long storage.

Or stop trolling if you're not actually retarded.
>>
>>61895191
your dumb.
a cpu doesnt read your whole hard drive into memory on startup because nobody is going to use all the information on their hard drive every time they turn on the computer.

same thing with apps.

if it precaches all of the apps into memory this is only useful if anon uses every single app. otherwise the os has spent time reading stuff from ssd that will NEVER be used by user in that session.

this is wasted time on booting up, every time you boot up, because not all of it will be used.

but it will make an app load faster, even though it took really long on start up to do so for the other 500 apps you DIDNT use

does htop misread cached memory on macos?
cache memory is meant to be displayed with yellow, and the value is not meant to include it
>>
>>61894482
>htop needs to be run as su to show all processes
Are you retarded or just stupid
?

Also, use Activity Monitor if you want a quick rundown of processes with a Cocoa interface.
>>
>>61895112
>but to even read into ram in the first place it needs to read from ssd.
That's why the OS does it ahead of when it's needed. Android does this as well
>then it is wasting time
This process generally happens when the computer is not being used. There's no slow down when there's no tasks to slow down
>>
>>61895301
>You can run htop & top as non-privileged user and can even view root's processes.

>black on semi-transparent black
nice colour scheme
>>
>>61895286
Yes, the green bars include cached memory too. Activity monitor reports it properly, though.
>>
>>61895217
Think like an engineer anon
>user frequently uses a specific application (ie internet browser)
>os caches files related to the app in ram
>application startup changes from half a sec to tenth of a second
>if RAM needs to be used for something else, clearing app from RAM is quick
There is a lot of speed to gain and nothing to lose
Similar with CPU cache
>>
>>61895446
so it's like android in way, where it's got some userspace memory management going on which isn't reflected properly with tools like htop?
>>
>>61895484
I'd assume that's what it's doing. I only used a hackintosh for a few months, though before switching back to Linux.

Other than knowing that macOS is a form of UNIX, I don't have much knowledge about the inner workings of the OS itself.
>>
>>61894482
>Not sorted by RAM usage

>>61894539
>Applefag logic:
