I've only owned one mac, from 2007 to 2011. It was a white macbook. I got it for $1k and after using it 16 hours a day for 4 years I sold it for like $500 if I'm remembering correctly. That means it was a $500 laptop and nothing could compete at the time even at $1000.

Do you not understand how building a cheap laptop works? Lower quality components are used so that they can sell the laptop for less money. Of course they then become more prone to breakage. This says literally nothing about their high end products. Look at lenovo for example. Some of their laptops (the cheaper ones) are of terrible build quality. I'm on a macbook pro 2011, running macOS High Sierra beta, all I've ever had to do is replace the ram, it still works perfectly. Just the fact that High Sierra is supported and runs well (from experience) means I'll get software support for at least two years, and probably more since they've released their next generation of backends in this release, hardware support shouldn't change for a while.

I had to pay 1300$ 6 years ago for it, and about 40$ to replace the ram on el capitan when 4GB wasn't enough anymore, and it's still as good as new, I still get 7h of battery life, I only shut it down for updates, I close the cover to stop using it, and I keep iTunes, a web browser (or two sometimes), some virtual machines, etc. opened all the time with little to no lag. I get that thinkpads can be competitive in that sense but you can't make this shit up.

I probably wouldn't replace it either though because I'm doubting more and more the quality of their newer products. I'd probably only hurry to get a macbook air before they decide to ruin that chain too by giving it only a lightning port and no headphone jack. I'm barely memeing, it's the reason why I'm hoping it holds out that long.

The acer aspire v5 573g I'm using has seen multiple HDDs and now an SSD, has had its monitor smacked against the keyboard countless times and even punched in the keyboard three times (has two visible dents), has been overheating to ~90C when OCd without crashing, and has had different liquids spilled over it.

After six months or so with that one I would sell it (most likely for a small profit) and buy another one. As a Mac user i would suggest buying a computer based on wether you prefer macOS or Windows, not because of the computer, because Razer makes very similar laptops.
After trying macOS i won't go back to Windows or Linux, i only game on consoles so i really don't have any need for Windows.
