How come no software, free or proprietary, even comes close this? It's not even just a matter of market share, there is simply no image editing software that can even pretend to match the functionality of PS. How come Adobe has no competitors in this area?

The people with the ability to write a Photoshop competitor don't edit images.
Because Gimp exists and nobody has the incentive to make another Photoshop competitor, and Krita is more focused on the digital art side than the photo editing side of PS.
Freetards don't care about images or photos and the jews realize they can't beat Adobe at their own game.

Probably because it's pretty hard to make that software and Adobe has perfected theirs over many years. It would be easier if Adobe just ported their software to all platforms, then there would be even fewer people trying to find alternatives. They will probably lose their marketshare at some point because people like new and exciting, but that could take many years more. Adobe still has some loose money to collect in this.

Raster editing is a relatively niche area, compared to shit like music players.
PS is based off the macOS kernel, so it shouldn't be too hard to RE and port over to Linux. But, there's not enough demand.
Vector shit is much more common and inkscape et al do a good enough job.
Because despite what STEMfags would like you to believe, good products are made through good design, not through good implementation.
And programmers are terrible designers.

Tbh not even photoshop is 100% satisfactory, coming from someone who uses it daily.
If the industry's best is only capable of slightly off the mark, writing good software must be impossible.
The sad tragedy is that the time it takes to completely understand a medium and know how it should work, leaves no time to actually make it work.
There are some video games I have learned so thoroughly that I could explain exactly how to make it perfect, but the catch is that I spent 10 years playing the game, while the developers took 3 years making it.

What a weird thing.
It's not like anyone can photoshop edit and print out a banknote just like that.
Forging usually involves taking a banknote, splitting it in two and making two banknotes.
