Why are PCI-E x4 and x8 graphics cards so rare? More bandwidth

I think a lot of 460's were x8 cards but with x16 connectors, just less pins

No real reason to make them that small. A 480 still needs a decent sized heatsink and actually a fairly large board for everything thats on it. X16 is a more physically strong connection with the lock on it, the extra pins dont exactly cost much and allow for some extra features.

Crossfire ever since bridges werr phased out actually require more of the pins, so they can br used as seperate channels from what the rest of the card needs.

Making a x1 card that fits the dimensions of a x1 slot leaves you with something like a GT 210 but made in a modern process to keep the die small. Even my x8 gt710 has the board absolutely packed

Thats not 100% true, many boards that havr x4 or x8 slots limit the power in them 25w because they don't expect you to put anything like a GPU in it
But there are plenty of boards where x4 or x8 slots still get the 75w of power, especially boards that only have one or two slots.

My old biostar something or whatever LGA 1150 board, which was I think DTX or something stupid? Mini ITX with two slots basically. The x16 was 75w and the x4 was 75w as well

Why not use integrated graphics with the STX form factor if you want something smaller than mini-ITX? I'm pretty sure there are even some STX motherboards that can accept interchangeable laptop GPUs.
