1) Just want to make sure that you know whether the debt was sold outright, and not simply that an agency is still collecting on their behalf. You might still owe Verizon.

I know they've sold the debt off, this was years ago and saw it on my credit report.

Two things:

-If you want Verizon service, just go with straight talk. They rent bandwidth on Verizon towers, and it's cheaper anyway ($45 a month for 8gb).

-Wait as long as you can to pay off the debt. The longer you wait, the lower the offer the collections agency will accept. Start out at 10% and hold your ground for a few weeks. Then come back at 15%. After a few years, they don't anticipate collecting much, and they've only paid a small percentage of the face value for the debt in the first place.

Is the unpaid debt still on your current credit report or has it been long enough to drop off? If it's still on there, whatever you do, absolutely do not pay any portion of it off before contacting the collecting agency and obtaining, in writing, that they will take the delinquency off. It's very common for them to never remove the debt even once you pay it off and at that point they have zero incentive to take it off, or even return your emails/calls.

In fact, if you really want it off your credit report, get them to say that it was a mistake and have them remove it from the reports before you send any kind of payment.

Collections agencies buy debt in blocks, and given the size of your debt they are unlikely to write it off. Since it's been sent to collections, your credit score has already taken the hit. Paying it off will not improve your score, and in fact may even lower it. Consult a local specialist to further evaluate your position. There is a small chance you may be able to walk out of this without paying a dime.

That's not how it works. Once the debt is off your report, your score goes right back to where it was before. Getting them to write it off as paid in full is the trick.

$1800 is a very small debt in the scheme of things. They probably paid 10% of face value for it. He could wait out the 7 years or offer them $180 to write the debt off as paid in full.
