So what are you doing tonight, /g/?

Pic related, currently flashing coreboot.

thinkpad?

what is that clip!?
>>
>>61819992
That looks pretty damn sexy. I'm only going to daddle with photo editing and video editing so perhaps I can work with youtubers. I don't know I need a fucking job lmao.
>>
>>61819992
Where are you from?

I'll pay you to flash coreboot on my T420.

Maybe I should use tripcode for future reference.
>>

wwww and that is that clip!? a surface mounted chip clipper?
>>
>>61819992
Believe it or not installing gentoo
>>
>>61820120
Yeah, that's the bloody clip. It gets the job done I guess. However reading the Winbond W25Q64.V takes ages.

where you got it i got some >>61820213 to kill
>>

That's just over SPI. Once flashed, an internal write takes ~20 seconds for me.

I bought it over on eBay. It's not too expensive, I paid around 20 bucks for mine.

Thanks, I'm still waiting for the bloody thing to compile.

gave up configuring xen on x220, hate linux, hate other oses not giving full kernel support for xen

HATE HATE HATE

now probably going to restore efi boot, gentoo, debian, kali partitions, then use debian as main os and fiddle with freebsd on virtualboxmeme (add openbox on it or something, try browser on it, etc.)

oh did i not mention i hate browsers? shit code
>>
>>61820391
thanks bro!
>>

Good luck on flashing that bad boy.
>>

Fug i can't find anyone that could flash coreboot in this shitty country and getting the materials to do it myself + shipping and import fees would be more expensive than the thinkpad itself.

>>61820748
I feel you on some things, fucking prices are a pain here too but I managed to find most of the shit locally. Maybe you'll manage someday. Or try Aliexpress and wait a month. You could get some cheaper knockoff SOIC-8 clip.
>>
Having a flasher is always a good idea. Lets you get bios locked chinkpads for all sorts of cheap

>>
>>61819992
I was considering flashing my T500 but the need to buy a Pi or that BeagleBoard thing and connect to the flash chip manually made me punt on that. I'd consider offering you money to come flash too, if I wasn't a Burger in flyover country.

But anyway what I'm actually doing tonight is reinstalling the pfSense box I use as a router. I got a new motherboard and (after much searching) a wireless card with an Atheros chipset that'll play nice with pfSesne's AP hosting. I was gonna do it this weekend, but the parts are here and my parents are gonna be gone, so I won't bother anyone by having the internet down for an hour or two.

I think 6 wires is enough
SOIC clip is different depending on the flash chip size
>>
>>61820927
In case of thinkpad X220 this one fits perfectly and yeah, 6 wires indeed is enough but you can never have enough spares/

My RasPI came in tonight so I guess fiddling with that and trying out some ultralight linux builds.
>>
>>61820773
Chile, for reference the RPI3B alone locally is around $67 and for some reason around $70 used on local listings.
>>
>>61820831
One thing I'd add: make sure the RPi has enough RAM. I had an OG model B, which ran out while compiling GCC.

However, even that's enough if you just use the Pi for the initial dump and flash once compiled. You can do the compiling itself on the ThinkPad, which makes it easier to make changes later on.
>>
>>61819992
how does that work? you connect RasPi to what exactly? What program are you using on raspi side?
>>
>>61821063
The RPi is connected to the chip which contains the BIOS, over the SPI protocol using a SOIC-8 clip. The program used is probably flashrom.

I think this guy here did a solid job on doing it for X220:
https://karlcordes.com/coreboot-x220/
>>
>>61821227
Thanks! Always wondered how this shit (flashing bios) was done.
>>
>>61821218
That's the SOIC-8 clip, and all it does is attaches to the legs of a chip underneath, allowing you to attach debugging wires much more safely. There's pinouts available at https://github.com/bibanon/Coreboot-ThinkPads/wiki/ThinkPad-X200. The X220 and X200 are connected in the same way, just rotated 90~degrees.

>>61821227
Yeah, that's a great guide. Also the one it's based on can help: https://tylercipriani.com/blog/2016/11/13/coreboot-on-the-thinkpad-x220-with-a-raspberry-pi/

anyway, was going to go to an electronics store today to buy some shit, but ended up falling asleep so maybe tomorrow. will miss this once classes fuck my shit up again.

Asking because it looks cool, why would some one flash their BIOS?
>>
>>61821816
If you're Stallman, security and no botnet
If you're a normie, faster booting. And that sweet feel of mostly open-source stuff instead of filthy propertiary BIOS
>>
>>61821792
yeah it's weird, not sure what was up. don't want to have to buy another clip.
i'll give it another go soon.
>>
>>61821771
I don't agree with the politics behind Libreboot either, but that's no reason not to use the project. That's like saying I won't use Windows because a Pooloo is the CEO. Though, I have plenty of other reasons to hate Windows so...

>>61821792
If it fails and says your hardware is in an unknown state, just retry the flash until it succeeds or says something like "The given images matches the contents of the chip".

>>61821816
>>coreboot
???

Also, the reason for flashing an Open-source BIOS would be for security and control over your hardware. Plus other benefits. Beat me to it: >>61821833

I don't care for the politics of something free as in freedumb. I'm also not complaining about them. His time, as a tranny, will come.

>>
>>61821644
what's the difference between them? is corebot not oss?
>>
>>61821870
Coreboot uses proprietary blobs for hardware initialization. So yes, and no. Most of the code is FOSS, except the Intel or AMD stuff required for booting.
>>
>>61821885
but libre boot reverse engineers those blobs?
>>
>>61821918
It either does that, or doesn't use them at all. For example, the CPU can run without proprietary microcode on 2008 or before Intel hardware. And the GPU payload has been reverse-engineered. Coreboot is the only one that runs on newer hardware because Intel and AMD have made these Microcode additions and sub-processor firmware required for use.

Good news - it works.
Bad news - screen goes a bit yellow after booting Windows 7 from second partition. Not sure what to do about it. However Arch boots fine.
>>
>>61821966
I forgot to mention that there's no image when booting Windows at all. Whoops.
>>
>>61821966
I don't think Windows is entirely supported by Coreboot, but I'm sure you can read on their forums or IRC for help on that issue. Glad you got it working!

If you do join their IRC, I'm on there. I'll look out for ya haha.
>>
>>61821644
trannyboot works only on few older thinkpads.
>>
>>61821993
Congrats on becoming more free!

If there's no image, that means that you haven't properly dumped the VGA BIOS. I never managed to do that, so I gave up and used Native Graphics Init, which allows for 1366x768 res instantly. However, I don't think windows supports this mode.
>>
>>61822091
