what about leopold fc660c? it's a more "normal" layout, though it's still ANSI. and you would still be missing the < > key... I've heard of a layout called US International, but I don't know how it actually performs. perhaps you could try it out? it would open up your options a lot more, but again, I don't know anything about how it would actually feel to use.

I need your help /mkg/. I've been searching for days but can't find what I'm looking for. I've finally given up and I'm looking for help from others.

I'd like to buy keycaps. Specifically: double-shot (not dyesub), PBT (not ABS), Japanese Kana legends. Any color, any profile is fine.

I can't find something like this anywhere. I've found ABS double-shot and PBT dysesub but not doubleshot PBT.

HALP!
>>
>>61668164
Those sub legends are pad printed. The only doubleshot sub legends you can buy today are crylic and are in ABS. What you want doesn't exist, unless you get dye-sub. I really don't get why it matters since dye-sub legends never wear off.
>>
>>61668351
>Those sub legends are pad printed
Not sure what you're talking about. The pic? Not important.

Dye-sub = fuzzy. Can't have dark keycaps with white legends. Don't want it. I'd like double-shot PBT. But I am unable to find it...
>>
>>61668496
>Dye-sub = fuzzy.
Not on good sets
>Can't have dark keycaps with white legends.
Yes you can, Google inverse dye-subbing
Also only three companies make double shot PBT (and not very well) since its a bitch to work with. Ducky can't make a decent set to save their life, tai-hao is so thin that GMK ABS sets somehow last longer, and vortex can't get the sub legends correct so they hack them up. Even on double shot ABS the Japanese sub legends are pad printed, if you're lucky they laser etch them. Your only option is to get dye-sub or laser etched PBT.

It looks like vomit. Have you even looked at one in person? It doesn't even look black.

>Your only option is to get dye-sub or laser etched PBT.
Both of these options are awful. Oh well. My quest is then over. I'll just buy a good quality double-shot PBT set with english legends and call it a day.

ALL edges on a dyesub are fuzzy. It's due to the texture of the keycap.

You're playing games kiddo. And it's obvious you reversed the names.

Again, show me a good inverse dyseub keyset for sale today. Every one of them I've looked at online and seen in person (I've even owned a chinkshit one) looked like shit.

And they really are fuzzy because of the way sublimation is made on top of a rough texture.

And I really don't are if you like and I don't. I would never buy dyesub again.

Is it true ever since mx silent's release cherry has been using new moulds that remove the scratchiness that was in their old linear switches?
>>
>>61668058
Whats the consensus on cherry mx reds?
>>
>>61669486
Kinda. Gaterons still have the smoothest molds since my two year old unlubbed zealios are smoother then the newer cherry switches. Its a whole lot better then the other chink shit like kailh, gaote, and zorro and its nice that cherry has caught up. They still give this shitty excuse that a little bit of scratchiness is good since it helps you feel how far down you are
>>
>>61669416
>http://pastebin.com/8Yku80VL
How can you stand the feel of the ABS though?
>>
>>61669380
Where I can found Vim caps?
>>
Can I get a second opinion on this?
I don't see the hype for Outemu Pruples, they feel like less smooth Gateron browns. Tactile bump is similar to Gaterons, less than Outemu browns, Zealios, or MX Browns.
I got to try Outemu Ice Purples but they feel different, almost like Outemu brown but weightier. They're supposed to use a Purple with a 62g spring, how does it change the feel so drastically?
Or are chink switches really that inconsistent and I got a weird batch?
>>
>>61669812
I have reds in my noppoo choc mini, love them honestly. Couldn't imagine getting anything different
>>
>>61669907
Meant to say MX clears instead of MX browns, I don't think there's any tactile switch with a smaller bump than MX browns
>>
>>61668058
Is it just me or does that look like corn?
>>
>>61669812
mx reds are a love/hate thing, some people like them while others hate them
if you're buying them for gayming consider kailh speed switches or those laser switches from gateron
>>
>>61669888
Some loser on geekhack contacted GMK and asked them if they could make a custom vim keycap. They charged him $100,000 for the molds and he actually paid it. They're very expensive, but the quality is superb
>>
>>61669858
Ok cool. I locked in on mx blacks and old reds were a little to scratchy for me so I was worried. Glad they've changed

RGB was a meme to me until I saw my friend's K70 and enjoyed the lights a bit too much.
>Previous/current keyboards
Used my laptop's chiclet keyboard for about 6 years until I spilled water and ruined it. Started looking into actual keyboards and discovered mechs.

I currently own a Leopold FC750R with Cherry Blues that I'm just not sure I'm entirely sold on. It's taken a lot longer than I thought it would to get used to the switches and the force needed to activate them and I'm not sure I entirely enjoy it. My friend just got a new K70 with browns and I really enjoy how much easier it is to press on the keys. A little too mushy I think, so maybe I'd like the reds? Blacks? I just don't know. I don't have any way of testing out other switches other than what friends have and the only friend with a mech is the one I just mentioned.

got tired of seeing my dad do his remote work with a shitty keyboard that he won't replace, got him a K840 Mechanical. not the biggest fan of Romer G switches, but durable for his long work days and quiet enough for conference calls. it also lacks all gamer logos and lights, which is good for him.
my one complaint is that there's no indicator light for numlock, yet still has a windows key lockout function (likely a holdout from the G413 rebadge).

I'd recommend a corsair strafe w/ blues or clears if you like floating key designs, and a ducky shine 4+ if you like set-in keys. Keep in mind, floating key designs are a bit louder as well. Don't fall for the red/brown meme, they feel like squishy shit. I wouldn't recommend a model M because it has a 2 (or 3?) key rollover, which makes typing fast painful, and gaming impossible.
>>
>>61670321
I think that looks pretty slick, actually. Nice design.
>>
>>61670526
>and gaming impossible
This is false.
>>
>>61668058
Recently bought the HyperX mech, and I got the model with cherry mx blues. I probably could have shopped around more and got a better deal off of amazon but this was nice because I walked right into best buy, tried out the keyboards, then walked out, and they were charging the same amount as amazon and any other online store as I could find.... Again, I could have ordered a budget mech and got something with gatereons, but I'm a high time preference fuck, so imo the extra money was worth it for me. I'm gonna order a set of keycaps - Are the cheap(ish) ones alright? I'm talking $25, roughly, not like crazy dirt cheap
>>
>>61671114
>Are the cheap(ish) ones alright?

You want pbt so they don't get shiny over time. You want cherry profile I'm guessing since you have a cherry board. As for the legends, you can go blank, but if you don't want that look into dyesub or doubleshot since things like pad printing will wear over time.
>>
>>61671011
I liked it mostly because it's no frills yet not meme tier oversimplified. Logitech is marketing this as a workplace mech keyboard and it's not doing a bad job at it. if you have a dictator/secretary, they would love something like this.
>>
>>61671153
Alright, thanks anon, I appreciate it.

I bought one of those grifiti fat wrist rests and it lasted 6 months before it started looking and feeling like shit. washing it didn't help much because it was fraying. Too scratchy and plastic-y for me, at least in the corsair and ducky ones I've tried in store and from friends.
Got a board with gateron reds, the smoothness is great on them, they don't feel at all scratchy or plastic-y.
Funnily enough, I prefer my gateron reds for typing and blues for gaming, text just flows on the reds whereas the clicky tactility of the blues helps with key repetition in game. Though the general consensus on that is the other way around, so your mileage may vary in that regard.
>>
>>61673275
The switches I've used for two years are cherry blacks. I tried reds a long time ago on a keyboard at a store and they felt too light but now I want to try them again. I bottom out most of the time.

Linear is... linear. There's nothing in between to judge or measure. It mostly come down to the weight, ala red vs black.

Hello guys, my first post and thread here, so let's hope this goes well ;)

Here it is:

It only cost me 8£ brand new. Why is it good you ask? I shall tell you.

Well, first of all: this keyboard is from Logitech, which is undoubtedly the best keyboard manufacturer today.

It is a rather common keyboard, yes; but because it is a Logitech, somehow it doesn't feel cheap. It's like the brand itself makes a crappy keyboard turn into a great one. I don't know, Logitech has always made me feel comfortable with cheaper products.

The keys are superbly well distributed, and your fingers won't touch the surrounding keys like some other ones I've tried. The keys are also not very soft, nor very hard to press down on. You know, this keyboard makes it just right, so that you can actually take advantage of the impulse that the rebounding keys give you.

This keyboard makes you feel like gravity is actually working WITH you, rather that against you.

Another thing I absolutely love about it, is the space bar. It is just the right size, and not too small or too big like on some other crappy keyboards from other manufacturers. The space bar is the most balanced key in the whole keyboard, it sits right at the center, and you can actually use it without looking at the keyboard. I mean, that's just brilliant design.

It's an USB keyboard. This makes it perfect for use with modern computers, and even laptops and netbooks. No more using that old crappy PS/2 port. We're in 2017, people.

I could be here all day, but in the end, I just wanted to share with you my experience with this marvelous piece of peripheral engineering.

I recommend this keyboard to anyone.

No. Most Japanese people use romaji input.
>>
>>61674292
I don't think it makes as much of a difference as the angle of your case and the key travel. Those two are harder to get used to than the keycaps.
DSAs are nice though, they look good. Up to you if they justify the $20-$30 premium.

But why?
>>
>>61673932

Coined by Richard Dawkins before you were born, a meme is a unit of measure of cultural transmission of a notable idea, behavior, or style.

Me saying I like or dislike brown switches, or a bunch of people like them is only a meme in the sense that people try them because of the recommendation of another or it is an available consumer choice, the same as ordering sausage on your pizza. However, the fact that something is popular is not a meme in itself, that's not the point...nor is you and every other tard on /g/ calling consumer trends in niche markets memes in order to describe the smallest amount of popularity only when you feel its popularity is undeserved or the product is over-hyped like a bunch of edge-lords.

People are only getting Outemu Purples because they're new, and the community is always hungry for 60-ish gram tactile switches. Surprise, Outemu switches are still shit like they've always been, and their notorious inconsistency still exists too. The interesting thing is that the pins on the bottom of the switch are these special hot-swappable pins. Can you even solder those things anyway?

Asked yesterday as well, but is it common for Unicomp Model M's to be very squeaky and squishy/wobbly at the bottom and side casing? Given how people say that they are built like tanks, I don't get that impression at all. Feels a bit cheap desu. There's a small gap between the top and bottom parts where I can push down a bit. It's fine when I'm typing on it, but picking it up it feels and sounds like any old, cheap rubberdome.

Also didn't realize that they switched positions on RWin and Alt Gr. A bit bummed out...

Topre does get stiffer over time, but not the same type of stiffness as membrane domes which tend to bind and become unusable. They just become more firm - 45g becomes 55g for example.

The case is ABS so it does yellow over time. The keycaps are thicc PBT so they will outlast the keyboard
>>
>>61678185
>>61678185
They become stiffer, if the domes are depressed for long periods of time (when they are stored incorrectly with the keys actuated) then the domes lose all tactility, but when used normally and stored correctly they just get a little stiffer. The pro 1's will yellow because the case is made from ABS plastic, the Pro 2's are all PBT except for the spacebar

If I understand correctly, Unicomp is the one that's been making IBM's keyboards since the very beginning, and those keyboards enjoy a good reputation.

150€ is a massive amount of money, but I can even think about spending them if it's REALLY worth it, after all I'd use it extensively, and if it's really that good, I would never buy a new one ever again.

I just wonder if there are good alternatives for cheaper.

To me the build quality feels cheap, for the sturdy and tanky reputation the Model M has. My Ducky keyboard feels more premium to me. However, I do enjoy typing on it and my WPM went up 5-10 (on typing tests at least) after a day when using the Model M.

I also didn't like that the Alt Gr changed position and will need to use AutoHotkey to modify, not having Alt Gr where my thumb is feels very weird and clunky.

Overall it's a good keyboard, but not the be all end all keyboard I was expecting.

Considering that the original IBM Model F was priced well over $1000 new with inflation, I'd say paying roughly $350-$450 w/ spare parts for an almost exact reproduction isn't so bad.

Relatively speaking though, I agree it's pretty heavily price for what's basically just an overbuilt 1980's keyboard. However it's a limited run so economically it doesn't really need to make that much sense anyways.
>>
I just switched the caps on my cherry blacks from abs SA to pbt cherry profile and the sound is interesting. A lot of the keys make this crisp almost click like sound and I can't tell why. Sounds nice though.
>>
>>61680889
I agree, they are steep, but the ultra compact f77 is end game material for me.
They are fully programmable as well. Or so Joe claims, but I looked into the controller they use and it seems like they are.
>>
Why is the best form factor (75% / 84 key) and the best switch (MX Clear) both vastly underrepresented ? Why do they both tend to be less common?
>>
>>61680495
That would cost exactly the same as the Unicomp, with the added unknown of the switch to choose.

>>61680889
I'd be happy to have a comparable build quality in a reasonably priced package: after all I personally don't care about the fact it's an almost exact reproduction of an already insanely expensive "historical" keyboard.
>>
>>61680948
Yep I agree too, an F77 with the HHKB/Sun layout and num+arrow key cluster is pretty much end game for me. Can't get here soon enough.

Also it uses a modified version of the xwhatsit controller so it should definitely be reprogrammable.
>>
>>61681036
There are plenty of 75% keyboards ranging form 40 bucks to $200. You just aren't looking hard enough. Clears have become more popular as even a couple of chink boards now have them, but they still are rare
>>
>>61681079
Then let me know when there is a 75% available with clears that isn't horrendously overpriced like the KBDfans
>>
>>61681064
I have a Filco and I would recommend it. The build quality is amazing, not to mention there is a huge modding community for it so you can get custom cases and controllers. The one problem is that the keycaps are some of the worst money can buy. They are absolutely terrible and you should replace them ASAP as even $20 chink PBT keycaps are better. The build quality of the case on Unicomp keyboards is worse, but their keycaps are some of the best I've ever seen. Even $80 EnjoyPBT sets are worse since any keycap longer then 2.25u seems to warp.
>>
>>61681108
Magicforce 82 is like $120 and it comes with cherry clears.
>>
>>61681198
It's a shame about those spaced out F keys in the top row. Could've been good
>>
>>61681036
You can always change the switches yourself or build one from a kit.
>>
>>61681064
You'd have a very hard time finding a keyboard similar in spec and price unfortunately. It's insanely overbuilt with full metal construction.

Aside from the historical factor, It's the only newly produced keyboard with capacitive buckling spring switches too.
>>
>>61681156
>The build quality is amazing
>the keycaps are some of the worst money can buy
So it isn't that amazing after all.
>not to mention there is a huge modding community for it so you can get custom cases and controllers
I won't mod my keyboard even once.

For what I've been able to learn until now my options are

>Unicomp's Model M; might warp and bend, and it might need repair one day, but for the cost of shipping I might just buy a new one altogether; it has the best mechanics and buttons.

>Model F; built to last a nuclear holocaust, armageddon, and the sun's death, in this order; costs more than my budget for my next smartphone (there must be a Murphy's Law that says that electronics never fail alone); ships from overseas (meaning added costs, and murderous italian VAT). Also, it isn't a 105 keys 100% keyboard, and doesn't come with the italian layout.

>Filco; it is built well, but comes with shit keycaps, and I should spend more on it; sells from Europe.
>>
Massdrop has 104s and 103s - shipping is $30 or something.
>>
>>61681537
Keycaps are cheap tho. Though it would still end up costing as much as a model M shipped from America
Also massdrop has some model Ms for around $110 bucks shipped to italy, You can also replace the keycaps if you want the Italian legends
>>
Maybe the italian guy could get something with matias clicky? I have no idea what the options and prices are so maybe someone can recommend, but the switches sound like something he'd like
>>
>>61681887
>no Italian layout
His only option would be to get the custom 60% keyboard that kind of supports it, and it starts at $150
>>
>>61680290
Buy an old board/terminal that has them already and convert it to USB. I swear, keycap sets and stuff are so fucking expensive when you can buy the actual stuff from the 70's and early 80's that they're based on for magnitudes cheaper.
>>
>>61681108
ALU84 from MechKeys.ca is cheaper than KBD. Sandwich build, PS2avrGB, different layout options..
>>
>>61681643
Massdrop's one is interesting: it would end up costing way 110€ instead of 150€, which is a good deal, basically because Massdrop's shipping doesn't cost 60 fucking dollarydoos, but I doubt I'd be able to convert it to an italian standard.

>What's so special about Italian anyway?
For the most part it's not that different: punctuation and symbols are in different positions, with some keys dedicated to accented letters, that are of wide use in italian. However the main difference is that the italian keyboard uses an ISO layout and compred to ANSI have the enter and backspace being of a different shape.

I can confirm that I think they are sitting on their lazy asses and refusing to fix their declining quality, much less actually improve an ancient product. They are a terrible representation of what an american keyboard should be. $80 is a good deal until you inevitably pay $50 for repairs (after shipping) when your KB inevitably breaks due to their absolute trash PCBs, plastic rivents, and USB cable attachment.

It's really too damn bad, because I still love the keyboard and type massive amounts on mine every day. Just can't beat that sound, feel, and PBT caps for $80.

You mean like the ornata? That's just membrane with a mechanical leaf inside, the 'slider' is the keycap just like every other membrane keyboard.
Feels super clicky even by switch standards and as if it had really thick, soft o-rings on the caps. As someone who has blues with o-rings, I actually kinda like it. I'd consider them if the caps were replaceable and it weren't so much.

And I'm talking about outemu browns, I've yet to try the blues, but I've not heard about the blues being grainy and scratchy.

>>Preferred switch type
>Absolutely no idea.

Go to your local computer and electronics stores, don't stop until you find one that has a few keyboards on display. Find out what kind of switch they use and try to type on them.

I personally absolutely require tactile switches and I mostly use the brown switches with o-rings on the keyboard - because it makes it close to silent. Yet I also have a keyboard with cherry mx blue which I only use when I'm alone - because those switches really do make your keyboard sound like a typewriter.

Some prefer cherry mx red. Some like spring switches.

You really should spend some time researching what kind of keyboard switches you prefer before you waste a lot of money on a keyboard.

>>Budget
>No more than the point of diminishing returns

If you want a totally fine mechanical keyboard then see what the prices are for the Fnatic Gear Rush Gaming Keyboard in Italy, it's probably quite affordable there like it is in the rest of the EU and it's got cherry mx switches. It also has that non-standard bottom row (meaning it will be harder to replace the keycaps, but given that you don't want to spend a lot of money you won't be doing it anyway). It comes in variants with all the usual switches and it's a fine keyboard. If you want fancy things you don't need like RGB backlight then you're looking at twice the price.

They are crazy expensive. There's a clean one on eBay right now and they want something absurd like $450 or something. I offered $300 and they counter offered $420. Plus I game quite a bit so I'd need to do that mod thing where you put another PCB in it to give it more than 2KRO, I forget what it's called.

If I had known KBP V80 Matias Click keyboards were such dogshit I would have just bit the bullet and bought a Model M SSK. I really can't wrap my head around why Unicomp wont make SSK's, even if they were like $200 I'd buy one in a heartbeat. And I'm going to find out how good they are because I ordered myself a $40 Elephone keyboard today.. so I'll probably share just how good these cheap ones from China are in a few weeks (or months). Elephone is known for cheap phones so that will be interesting.

One tell-tail sign that what you call "victop" isn't all that though is that there is no keyboard manufacturer named victop, it's just a series of cheap keyboards sold under a bunch of names. VicTop i-500 is the same as "VicTsing I-500", Mpow i-500 and so on. It will probably break within a few days or weeks.
