Hello /g/, I start college in mid August and wanted help choosing a laptop. I will most likely buy it used, I just need a couple models to look into. I don't have a mac or windows preference but would like something that won't make me look super poor. I'm a Mech Eng major and would like to not have trouble running certain things for classes and stuff. Budget is $500

If you had a higher budget I would say Macbook Pro. You can get used 2013 Airs for about $400 on eBay, but as a Mech Engy it might not run CAD very well if you work with large or complex models. You could get a decent used Windows laptop for that amount, but I have no idea as to what brands to look out for.
