A rubber dome keyboard uses collapsible rubber domes that when pressed, make contact and trigger an electric switch.

A mechanical keyboard uses an actual mechanical switch to detect a keypress.

The former feels kinda mushy, whereas the later gives a greater physical feedback. Some are really clicky and loud, others are softer and more quiet.

OP here, thanks for the explaination guys. This thread made me realize I actually own a click click mechanical keyboard because I never replaced the one my parents bought me in 15 years ago. It's a shame I had something to be an asshole about on /g/ all those years and didn't even know it!!
