If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

but those are worse in gaming than Ryzen. Ryzen is only a few percentage points worse than a 7700K which is still the best for gaming.

Wait for 2000$ 18 core Intel so that you can get those sweet coars without sacrificing any single core performance.
>>
>>61619091
If you're going AIO Liquid cooling, go 280mm or go home.
>>
>>61619488
All the test and the people I've talked to told me 7820x is slightly better in gaming. It has higher IPC and freq. You need to heavily OC a 1700 to get similar fps to a stock 7820x.

Obviously 7700k is king but I'm not going to buy a corelet CPU.

>Cheap HDD, Cheap PSU
These are the only 2 parts than actually break and the PSU can even kill other components.

You still can't fit gta 5 on a ramdisk.

>>
>>61619608
I don't care about CPU price I want the best gayming performance per core and that's Intel. Would have went with 7700k if it would have had at least 6 cores.

Didn't fall for GAYMING mobo, went with that one because the other ASUS boards have shitty Realtek audio chip while the STRIX one has Supreme FX audio

I already have the PSU from my old build, I took it to an electrician who checked inside and gave the OK. I'm not gonna throw it away if it works, get real dude. Certifications are a meme.

HDD I need a big one for storage, any recommendations? Don't shill me M.2 trash because I don't fall for memes.

RAM I admit might be overkill, but that's why I asked for advice

Does anyone here have any experience with water-cooling? I would love to try it but I don't know where to begin. EK's Fluid Gaming series seems nice since it has a gpu block. It's also 1/3 the price compared to what EK's configurator said a custom loop would amount too ($250 vs $700). I'm currently using the stock Ryzen cooler

All 1080ti variants perform within 5% difference of each other and even then the difference is due to the silicon and not the variants. So the only difference you are paying for is for the cooler, fans and features.

EVGA and Asus one runs the coolest and quietest according to benchmarks. Which is no surprise since their coolers are big as fuck and have triple fan.

Outside of these more premium brands, MSI gaming X and the Gigabyte Aorus is the best

scrap the 1080 for a 1070 if you can. A 1080 is extreme overkill. Hell a 1070 is overkill but RX 580s and 1060 6GBs are fucked price-wise because of miners.
You can also grab a cheaper power supply.
>>
>>61621058
i like the look of both of those, but something i didnt consider is that pcpartpicker claims the EVGA G2 650w wouldent fit in either. not sure if thats a mistake or what
>>
>>61621132

For gaming I'd go with an i5 build. You only need 8GB of ram, and since it's getting cheaper I'd get the 550-575GB Crucial SSD that's out there now. It's only like 150.
>>
>>61621162

That sounds like a mistake desu, I think any full size PSU can fit in the 240.
>>
So my new Ryzen 1700X build is getting idle temps above 45C, that can't be normal right? It sometimes spikes up to like 60C for some seconds aswell. I've read that for the Ryzen X models the temp readings had an offset by like 20C, and I've updated my BIOS to the newest version but it made no change in the reads.
I've improved the airflow by installing another intake fan on the front and removing a HDD cage but that barely made a difference. Even when I try running the CPU fan at 100% it barely makes a difference in the temps, which makes me think something is wrong with my fan placement. It's a be quiet! Pure Rock which I could only mount so it the airflow goes towards the top of the case, which is covered in sound dampening material, instead of out the back. Could that be the issue? Another possibility could be that I stupidly had to re-apply the CPU fan like 3 times when building, which might have fucked up the cooling paste somehow?

I'm going to build a PC. I'm certain that I'm going to build around the 1050ti (Zotac) now I just need other parts to match the performance without bottlenecking/overkill. I just want to play battlefield 1 at 60fps on medium 1080 and other 2007-2015 games maxed. I still want to be able to render videos fast. I'm not looking for anything super fast so the R5 1600 is too much. Just something cheap but reliable. I'm thinking of:
>Zotac 1050ti
>Ryzen 1300x
>AsRock AB350M Pro 4
>1x8gb RAM (to up it to 16 in the future)
>250gb SSD (Is Samsung 850 Evo the best budget SSD for $100?)(going to add a 1TB WDC Blue in the future)
>Seasonic M12ii 520 EVO
>LG 22MP58VQ
>some case

Is it fine for an basic build? I'm just sick of using my 10 year old dinosaur with the Pentium E6600 without any gpu. I've been playing dota 2 on lowest settings at 15fps ffs. My budget is around $800. Don't recommend other video cards. They sell 960s for $240 dollars but the 1050Ti is still safe at $160.

Temps are pretty much the same with the side panel off, ambient temp around 25C. Pic related for fan placement. I really don't like that the CPU fan is right after the GPU and that the airflow goes to the top of the case, but that was the only direction I could mount this fan on the mobo.
The thermal paste was preapplied to the CPU cooler, but due to fuckups in mounting it I had to remove it and re-apply it a few times.

No it isn't, you goddamn retard. He wants to play at 144Hz and even 1080 isn't going to that in most newer games at 1080p without lowering settings. Some don't even making fucking 60fps at 1080p without lowering settings using an overclocked 1080. I should know, I own one.

There's literally no such thing as "overkill", only how much you're willing to compromise.

>>
>>61621083
The intel i7 7700k is maybe your only option for "strict" 144 fps (o closer) at that budget, the processor works well on FPS games but it may get maxed out in core/thread whore games like RTS games, when the processor is maxed out it begins to suffer for higher fps lows but it still maintains high FPS.

If you don't mind having 5% to 20% less fps then pick Ryzen 1600 OR 1700 + high frequency ram. This processor is newer and have lower fps lows.

The video card depends of your country prices, you need a GTX 1070 equivalent. New AMD cards are coming out in 4 days.
>>
>>61621083
Ryzen 1600, GTX 1070
>>
>>61622043
some corrections, you may get 144fps in most well optimized FPS games with a gtx 1070.

But if you really want to play most games without lowering graphics at 1080p/144hz then you need a GTX 1080 equivalent, specially for new upcoming games.

>>
>>61625740
no because all the gaming ones were already bought, zero miners will replace their gaming cards with mining ones unless they break
>>
>>61625693
sounds more like there's something wrong with your circuits. What are the circuit breakers your room is on rated for? 10 amps, 20 amps? Your PC really shouldn't draw anything close to enough to trip a breaker. And if it was a short it would trip the breaker immediately.

Are you sure it's not a GFCI or whatever you call those things in the US that's tripping?

>>61625740
no, until ASIC miners for the obscure shit that pushed the recent supply crisis are out it will probably be dead
>>
>>61625740
why they didnt sync release mining cards with gaming cards is beyond me
>>
>>61625804
because mining cards make no sense. No one knows when X cryptocurrency is going to start the next hype, you can't plan for it. From tapeout to products it takes at least half a year, and ramping up production takes months too. You can't design specific ASIC miners either because you don't know what obscure shit is going to be the next hype. If a cryptocurrency sticks around for long enough mining with GPUs gets inefficient and in additon ASIC miners get released. But then the next one creates the next hype and it starts from 0.

the sandisk ultra II is really cheap in germany right now and a decent SSD. apart from that there are your usual suspects like the samsung 850/950s, crucial bx100 and so on. Just check a price comparison website and then some benchmarks to make sure it doesn't suck completly. T here are usually no significant differences. Check if your PSU comes from a reliable OEM and replace it if it doesn't.

For a GPU, depends on what you want to spend. RX470s/480s are out of stock everywhere, so you might go for a 6GB GTX 1060.

still price is a bit too much, any way i can lower it a bit?

It's not incompetence if you can milk it for as long as possible by keeping supply low.

why a 1700? 1600 wont bottleneck the 1080ti

Is there any actual difference between all these 1070 flavors out there? I want to get the asus rog strix one since it matches the mother board i have, but does it even matter? should i just get the cheaper gigabyte one?
>>

if you like loud noise that you are forced to use headphones, sure why not get the cheep one
>>
>>61628457
>Is there any actual difference between all these 1070 flavors out there?
The difference is in cooling, VRM and how high they're clocked out of the box. You should also consider warranty and how good the RMA process is.
>>
>>61628437
If you want to future proof, moar coars is the way to go. There are already at least a few games which use all of the cores that they can.

Building a small formfactor for studio capture work. Just photo workflow, no video. Gonna put it on a dolly with a UPS, keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Shouldn't need a video card for it right? Adobe and capture one don't really benifit from GPU acceleration.
This board has a 3.0 front header so I can add a few more USB ports if I need to.
>>
>>61628632
Yeah you don't need a GPU. I like editing my videos with a black screen too Anon.

It's not one of the plugs that has the test and reset button. I just have to keep going into the basement to flip the breaker switch. Sorry I'm bad at explaining. When I press 'test' on the breaker in the basement it immediately breaks and cuts power. So maybe it is gcfi. Blah I'm dumb

the "test" button is supposed to flip the GFCI. I doubt it's faulty. But it might be possible that your PSU flips the GFCI (which would indicate failure, but not necessarily catastrophic failure)

I just want to play games at 144hz. I think the faster ram is worth it, only like $40 more and I know at least two of my games should pick up like 15-20fps from it vs 2133. Already have a delid tool (3d printed it at the library).
Hows it look?
I feel like buying a gtx 1080 in mid 2017 is the most retarded fucking thing imaginable because it's so old and shitty with it's locked down bios but whatever. My GPU shit the bed and really this whole computer just needs to be set fire to.
Realize I'm spending quite a bit on storage but I've been using two 320gb 5400rpm HDDs from laptops in the trash for too fucking long and that's one of the things I'm most looking forward to.
gammax 400 looks fucking insane from tomshardware's benchmarks, like 2c hotter than a dark rock pro 3 insane.

quick question
is the Ryzen 5 1600 compatible with Corsair CMK8GX4M2B3200C16R Vengeance LPX 3200mhz sticks?
i can't find a compatibility list besides pcpartpicker, although I'm sure it's reliable enough
>>
>>61629653
Check the QVL of your motherboard.
>>
>>61629653
Go to the mobo manufacturer's site
>>
>>61629688
>>61629666
yeah, it seems compatible, not that specific model, but the frequency is fine
the reason I'm asking is because it runs the OS fine, for about 5-10 minutes before i either freeze completely or bluescreen with a clock_watchdog_timeout error code
any ideas on what to do
I've updated to the latest mobo chipset and bios, temps are fine (30 idle) and it passed a windows memory diagnosis

msi b350 gaming plus is the mobo btw

Could he switch the CPU for a R3 1300X?
>>
>>61629861
The 1300x is not really worth it unless overclocking is not an option. You get like 100MHz extra out of it compared to the 1200.
>>
>>61629861

its 10% better gaming performance out the box and better than the i5-7500 without overclocking

i would go for that since its only $120

>8 (at least) port gigabit
Most of the routers out there have 4 ports (+one WAN up-link port) and you're quickly talking $300-400 for one of the rather rare routers that do have more ports. That's .. just silly so I recommend that you drop that requirement. Just ignore that requirement buy some $100 router and a $20-30 8 port gigabit switch.

Drop the liquid cooling and get an R7 and increase the ram to 16 GB. And don't tell me that 8 GB is enough. It is not.

Can't say much about the other components but i suggest you get a 2TB HDD, the difference in price is so small.

don't fall for the avg FPS meme anon. The frametimes on that thing are horrible. Ryzen will give you a (very slightly) lower avg FPS but much smoother experience overall.

>>
>>61630969

The stock cooler is finer for a 3.7/3.8 Ghz overclock, though you want an aftermarket cooler to kit 4.0 Ghz

Building my first PC, would be primarily used for gaming, should i get an i7 or Ryzen?

I bought a single stick of RAM 16 GB that runs @ 2400 Mhz.

Should I return it and get something else? I have an ASUS Prime B350-Plus and a Ryzen 5 1600. What RAM should I get?
>>
>>61631980
Depends on your budget and what you intend to play... i7 is best purely for gaming, but Ryzen 5 1600 is the best bang for your buck.
