12TB currently, array is in the process of expanding to 21TB though since I added more drives. Should be done in 15-16h or something like that.

>>61597757
ZFS is probably the best, but it's more demanding in terms of resource requirements. Linux software RAID (md/mdadm) is pretty solid, easy and good too, but compared to ZFS it has the disadvantage of not detecting bit rot in any array config. You can easily expand an existing md array too even while it's online, ZFS is a bit more restricted in that regard if you can't tear everything down and start from scratch.

I hope that guy realizes all the electricity he's using by buying 100x HDD's.

5400RPM WD RED = 3.5 watts x 100 HDD's = 350W x 24hrs = 8,400w per day.
8400w/1000 = 8.4kWh per day
252 kwH per month
252 kWh per month x 0.12 cent(average you pay in electricity) = $30.24 per month

so, that's an extra $30 on his electric bill every month, or $360 every year

31TB, but it's not a 'proper' setup.

It's just a bunch of disks inside an enclosure. No redundancy, no mirroring. no backup.

I know, it's bad, but I'm still saving up. I'm going to need about $2000 to pull this off.

Here's what my master plan is.

RAID 10
66x HDD's @ 1TB = 33TB of usable storage.
66x read and 33x write speed gain
Pic-related bay

HOWEVER
Since I'm transferring my entire 31TB into the raid, this means I no longer need the JBOD(Unless I wanted to use it as a backup), so I'll have an additional 31TB of storage, just not raid'd.

So in total, 64TB of storage.
>>
>>61599173
What? My movie files are like 10gb on average. I'm not wasting space with 50gb files for unnoticeable differences. Go back to /ptg/.

Also, not all of us can have our parents afford 1gb down speeds.
>>
>>61599221
>unnoticeable differences
Unnoticeable on a tiny 24inch monitor, yes that's obvious.

But when you're playing them on a 70+ inch 4k TV, that 50GB movie makes a difference.

>>61599212
Don't bother with RAID. Use JBOD using FlexRAID. It's cheap and you are still able to rebuild your data should a disk fail.

>>
>>61597407
32TB in raid0 accross 4x 8TB HDs. No fucks given.
>>
>>61599212
Actually this may not be possible.

I use VeraCrypt to encrypt all my drives. If I encrypt the entire RAID and 1 drive dies, what happens?

>>61599283
>t's cheap and you are still able to rebuild your data should a disk fail.
Thanks I didn't know about this.
However I would like to have that read/write speed boost from distributing the load across multiple disks. Is this capable of that?
>>
>>61599301
>Is this capable of that?
lolno.
>>
>>61599259
Same plan, only my `job' is working for my father which allows me to just leave and travel whenever for however long.
>>
>>61599301
It builds bit for bit so should work. You will have the same issue with any RAID setup. Unless you have a 10gb network system I doubt you would notice any speed difference. Dunno much about how you are connected though.

I have an external 2tb toshiba canvio basic HDD but when I try to record to it (using shadowplay or OBS) it just lags a lot and has a lot of problems making it basically unusable, also it falls asleep a lot if it's not in action which isn't a bad thing but it sometimes cuts out even just listening to music because the song is long and doesn't load anything for like 7 minutes

10 (stripe of mirrors) has more IOPS, it'll scrub/resilver a lot faster. Z2 is basically RAID 6. Slightly better redundancy - any two drives can die, instead of mirrors where any one drive can die, but then you'd better hope the second to die isn't the other side of that one mirror. Higher space efficiency but slower.

>>61599128
Depends on workload. Database servers need big piles of RAM. Your personal anime storage doesn't. Home data hoarders are fine with normal amounts of memory.

>>61600698
Optical discs are worth using because they're a cheap way of doing off-site backup. Burn disc, leave it at work or a friend's house. You can leave discs all over for cheap, whereas external HDDs are expensive enough to make you think twice about doing that. Use parchive and/or DVDisaster to protect against bit rot, and encrypt your shit.

It makes booting into windows 3-5x faster. If that makes sense.

Count the seconds from when the computer starts up or rather right after the bios screen.

If the HDD takes ~30 seconds to fully start up (and make the windows usable without lag), then the SSD will do it in ~10 seconds.
>>
>>61607344
Though it should be noted NvMe m.2 drives add ~5+ seconds to your POST time since you're going through the extra step of initializing a PCIe boot device.

Not a huge concern but people tend to gloss over that

Raid is cheap.
I'm using a raid 0 3 hdd Seagate.
When I installed a crucial NVM. I also had one cheapo Kingston ssd.
When I installed the NVM I just run atto for lulz.
It was a shock to realize that my raid was actually faster than the cheapo Kingston.
300mb vs 550mb.

Random was similar.
NVM is strong 2200mb/s seq read.

So a few things, first they tend to have a much lower failure rate unless you get Seagates which in that case they fail about the same. The only Seagate that has ever been worth a shit are the 4TB NAS drives (MD4000 I believe was the product ID). Additionally, they tend to have better throughput and random read/write performance then regular desktop drives, but unless you're running a RAID where you need some throughput and you're using all your SSD/RAM cache it's not necessary. This buildout is likely going ot be the last rust deployment that I do. Everything else is SSD these days, thank god.

You do. Spin down in an array type setup is retarded as the moment you need to access a single 4k sector not in ARC you have to input double power to spin up and wait out the ~5 seconds of input lag for everything to come back.
Or if you have to turn off the array... Fuck.
Spinning up that great mass of clanking iron is going to provoke some weaker ones to failure as it's more mechanically grating to spin up than to let spin or let rest.

Simplify your life.
Get BTRFS or ZFS.
At beyond 2TBs not having checksums for anything other than vidya files is absurd.

Use dm-crypt layer or LUKS.

Do programs like rsync and freefilesync work on different drives in the same system?
I want to mirror my ssd to an hdd so raid is a terrible idea right?
>>
>>61613524
Rsync works between anything anywhere. Local drives, NFS shares, tunneled over SSH.
With mdraid you can make a RAID1 and tell it to write-mostly to the spindisk, so Linux won't get the idea of bogging it down with read commands.

~8.1TB total:
2TB WD Green
3TB WD Red
3TB external Seagate (for backups)
120GB Kingston SSD

The WD Green is much more noisy than the WD Red, not buying Greens anymore.

Should I be concerned about my SSD, it has started losing condition somewhat steadily, starting from 97% few months ago and now down to 94%. Is there a catastrophic failure to be expected or is it enough to keep an eye on it and buy a new one later? Pic related, the drive.

>>61613811
Filesystems with extra gimmicks.
BTRFS can span over multiple devices, can automatically store multiple copies of the same data (kinda like RAID1) and give you transparent compresison of on-disk data (CPU cycles are plenty, disk-IO is not). A use case for BTRFS is if you have a bunch of drives in different sizes, it'll spread data evenly on them. If you tell it to "RAID1" the data, it'll make sure to store the copies on different drives.

>im using windows, so ntfs or bust.
You do realize you can still keep your storage on a separate file system, right? You setup ZTFS/linux distro on the storage, then access via your local network.

Your local network doesn't touch your internet, nor do you even need an ISP for it to work. The latency will barely be noticable, so it'd be as if the storage was connected via USB3 or SATA anyway.

This way you can use Windows, while having a superior file system for your mass storage.
>>
>>61614901
but i need separate machine for it, right?
I have some 2x xeon cpu server with 64gb of ram lying around, im just too lazy to set it up proprly - i have hyper-v there with some virtual amchines for testing, as well network rendering, but never considered setting up NAS there - it is wise to just install another VM with some FREE AS FREEDUM linux, and set up all the disks there? Im clueless, i just use solutions that works, i took pleasure from fucking around PCs 10 years ago, now i consider them just tools for the work.

Update

I just got my 2 WD Easystore 8tb usb external drives.

Gutted them both and they had full 3.5" drives. 8tb Reds, and even a slightly more special version with 256mb of cache. The bare drive goes for $260, this cost me $160.

If the Best Buy deal is still going, I recommend you get it before it's gone.

Has anyone figured out the reason for this? Is it WD RED but they've disabled TLER since they're sold as single drives?

Has anyone confirmed it's still running stock RED firmware?

6× 3TB drives
2× 640 GB drives
All pairs of drives in software-RAID1, which are then used in for LVM PVs. Shared with all the systems on my network over NFS.

I use mostly WD, but since it's all in RAID 1, I don't care all that much. A failing drive is easily replaced, and I have drives lying for spares.
>>
>>61599566
That's very funny. I've allocated 20 GB of my LVM space to my root partition, and I've never even had to think about it. Now that I look, it's currently using 12 GB, but there's probably a fuckton of stuff I could remove trivially if it were ever to become a problem.

Is that what you get for using Windows?

>>
>>61617080
They're legit WD Reds except with 1 year less of a warranty. The MyBook drives come with a White label drive that doesn't have TLER turned on by default but you can turn it on. They're all based of the HGST He8. Also shucking them doesn't void anything, you can still RMA. Ignore the retards that say otherwise.
