While we're talking about rooting, what advice can /g/ give to a complete noob who is thinking about rooting his Galaxy J7?

All exynos and apparently the Hong Kong/China SD can be rooted. But any other snapdragon varient can not. No matter the carrier. Every US s8 is the same. No matter the carrier which is why all the phone models have the same number (G950U/G955U)

You're finding a way to get write access to the system partition, basically. Unlike other manufacturers Samsung uses a proprietary bootloader in place of Qualcomm ABoot.

The first stage is actual ROM (read only memory) that contains a few small programs that get loaded into memory on power on, checks itself, and loads the first bootloader, and then this loads up the second bootloader and so on. Each stage is signed. If you wipe out the first bootloader, your phone is totally fucked. Second one is fixable. When you unlock the bootloader, you're unlocking the second one. Each stage is interactive sort of like EFI, where you can add on different modules. So systemless root is when you load the kernel like that. Samsung has a thing called KNOX which is loaded before the kernel and checks the system partitions and if anything is running as root except the system, it will flip a hardware fuse voiding your warrant, will brick your phone, or will simply reset the phone depending on the model. I've been working with the AT&T Note 5 and it straight up bricks the phone when you root it. You have to reflash the OS with a desktop tool called ODIN. There is temporary root on it with a leaked engineering kernel but that only goes so far and my Note 5 just sits in a drawer these days.
