Why is this?
what about all the professional video production programs on linux. those arent free

If you only use free software on windows it'd be the same.

That's how captalism works boi
>work in GIS
>proprietary version ArcGIS is notorious for crashing
>graphical rendering engine that is literally from the 90s and has not aged well at all
>tools are locked behind premium license levels
>GUI has not had a facelift since 90s either
>still doesn't support multi-core operations in the year of our lord two thousand and seventeen
>can only read one file type: theirs
>basemaps take forever to load and are a complete pain in the ass to set up
>frequent memory leaks
>only runs on microcuck winblows
>open source equivalent QGIS
>fancy graphic rendering engine showcasing blending, precision control over every aspect
>all the same tools as arcgis but all free
>supports multi-core rendering
>runs faster and smoother
>basemaps can be loaded with ease from the simple browser and render as fast as your connection allows
>reads and writes to almost every geographic file type in existence, even weird obscure ones like japanese satellite image formats
>runs on windows, linux and mac
i get paying for software if it's better quality than the free version, but in this case you are literally just paying for inferior software. it blows my mind how people actually shell out thousands of dollars a year for garbage arcgis licenses

It's not that simple, a good chunk is not on windows.

I'm sure you can compile the vast majority of stuff with Cygwin at least

There's a simple explanation for such a phenomenon
For a long time things went like this
>Boss tells ITfag to find software for specific task
>OpenSpecificTaskSolver vs Proprietary Studios Specific Task Solving Solution: Enterprise Edition
2 possible scenarios:
>ITfag goes with FOSS
>Convinces boss with things like "look it's free"
>Company starts using it
>Something doesn't work
>Hold on I'll fix it
>Tries to fix it himself or use community advice
>doesn't werk
>Boss buttmad, fires him
or
>ITfag gets the proprietary one
>"this is gonna cost us but it'll be better"
>Company starts using it
>Something happened™
>Hold on I'll call support
>No solution
>Well I did everything I could
Nowadays FOSS gets more and more enterprise support, which destroys the possibility of ending up like this, but it'll take some time for these practices to get widely adopted.

AHAHAHAHAHA no.
If anything, windows is the plug and play platform. Linux expects the user to do a bunch of stuff a user shouldn't have to care about to do literally anything.
>>61541709
FOSS is the way forward.

If you know what you're doing things do work well. The problem is that linux expects you to know, for example, the intricacies of the bluetooth protocol, just to pair your phone with your computer.
On the other hand Windows has bullshit like drivers that require a facebook account.
