Ordered this bad boy as a replacement for my old 22 inch display (LG Flatron W2242P).
First wanted to go with 4k but my laptop is only supporting 2560x1600 max resolution for external display.
My daily tasks are: programming, surfing the web, media consumption (movies) and occasional gaming.
Did I just waste 370 euro or did I do good?

You could have done better.

Europfag here.
I think you should have wait at least 6 Months more. The 4k affordable meme is almost here.

Sure I could, for 229 euro more that is.
LG 34UM88C for 599 was very appealing but out of reach for an unemployed neet like me.

I was just curious about ultra wide screens since I wanted to get dual/triple monitor setup anyways (code editor/ide on 1st screen, testing/console on 2nd and maybe browser/manpages/docs on 3rd) now I can do it all on 1 (hopefully) for a price of one 4k monitor.
And believe me, I've been living in this Beer/Chocolate/Moroccan infested village of a country far too long to know that in 6 months prices would still be where they are now.
So, i want to buy a new monitor. I'm currently using a pretty generic 23" 1080p LG one and since i recently bought a GTX1080 i wanted to upgrade my resolution. Now, apparently 4k is kind of a meme from what i've read, being extremely hard to get good performance on and since i actually know basically nothing about monitors i wanted to ask if 2K monitors are worth it, and also about any other tips that could be useful when picking which one to buy.
That's a terrible resolution for that size.
I have a 25UM55 and paid 160 eurodollas for it and even at this size it doesn't feel all that pleasant.
I mean it's pretty ok but first I have to go look for movies that actually have this aspect ratio, which is a pain in the ass, and second there's a lot of stuff that doesn't really support this aspect ratio.
In any case, at the time I got it, a 2K monitor was more expensive.

like 99% of movies?
pic related all of my movies look like this. fits perfectly.

I find a lot of 16:9 around. Either that or most movies are crappy letterboxed 1080p rips
And of course every fucking TV show.

True, that is what my 27in is for

90% of the programs and games I have work with 21:9, so i'm satisfied with my purchase. plus freesync is pretty good too.
