Help me out /g/, I want to connect a router through ethernet to my ISP-provided router to boost the signal in the second floor of my house. I also want to have more control over the second router for security reasons. Is it even worth using the ISP provided one if I'd have 1 router with custom software connected to one without any?

By ISP provided router, do you mean the modem/router combo which many of them provide? Because you still need the modem at the start of this setup. No sequence of hardware will work without it being the first step out of the wall.

If you want to boost signal, what you generally want to do is go modem -wire-> router -wire-> access point. Many routers, especially with custom firmware, can act as access points. You'll give it the same SSID and password (albeit different channel) as your first router and it'll just extend your network around the second floor.

No, and here is why

ISP
>Pay per month to rent modem/router
>No control, locked and controlled by ISP

Own
>No additional monthly fees
>You control the router and level of security

In the end, you owning the router is better because there are more pros than cons. That being said, if you are not tech savvy then owning your own router means replacing it out of your own pocket. Estimated ~$100-$170 depending what you buy.

My recommendation would be to go with Linksys WRT1900AC or a barebone micro appliance running pfsense.

No, I mean the netgear router they gave me. Honestly security is of more interest to me at this point than signal strength because it's already "ok", about 24Mbps down compared to my 60Mbps with ethernet.

Then you might as well just replace both routers with your own preferred hardware. It seems senseless otherwise if you care about security. I feel like I must be missing something here because this makes your question really trivial.

This is most likely due to your wireless speed. This happened to me where my connection was half of what I got over Ethernet. Wireless AC resolved that issue easily. I get 800Mbps over WiFi where as I get close to 1Gbps on Ethernet.
