how is this allowed?

No it isn't. Its real main purpose is to randomly hang and give out unknown errors half the time you use it. Then you "updates" which basically reskin iTunes and introduce even more bugs, glitches, and unknown errors.
>>
>>61480638
thats what you get for owning a Mac :^)

I'm still mad about the recent miniplayer redo.

And decode video files.
And purchase audio and video files.
And play internet radio stations.
And sync with portable devices.
etc.
>>
>>61480557
>main purpose is to decode audio files

No, it's to get you to buy shit from the apple store

What's the macOS equivalent to foobar, if there is one? I've using Vox right now. It's okay, but it doesn't match foobar.
>>
>>61481309
I just run foobar on macOS using wine and the wasapi component . wish there could be some controls on the menu bar or something and not having to set the output device every time but it works

Open the file and take a look. Majority is art and firmware and code to access various audio devices (iPods, iPhones, iPads and a bunch of 3rd party devices).
iTunes also includes its own UI art because it's independent of the OS. This is so the iTunes looks the same across all versions of macOS. iTunes does not rely on OS UI libraries because it's cross platform too.
Executable itself is small (like few megs).

Anyway, I looked into this mystery myself last year... that was my conclusion. Do some digging... it's interesting how it works.
>>
>>61481904
Why would you say that after the Apple v. FBI court case?
>>
>>61481826
Oh, and one thing I forgot... LOCALIZATIONSS! I don't remember anymore but there was like 100MB+ of localizations for various languages and locales. And iTunes also includes WebKit too which is like 30MB.

anyway, it's not just empty bload... there's a reason why it's so big.
>>
>>61481309
Deadbeef.

>>
>>61480634
yeah buy vorbis is shit
>>
>>61481826
so iTunes is like X11, it does so much it shouldn't really do that it's basically it's own operating system
>>
>>61482280
All mac apps are like this. They are so simple to install (drag and drop) because they are containers holding everything they need to run.
>>
>>61481808
>also doesn't take an hour of configuring every time you want to watch something for muh perfect quality
>>
>>61480557
And decode video files.
And purchase audio and video files.
And play internet radio stations.
And sync with portable devices.
And have a streaming service included.
And have a file converter.
And have a backup option for devices.
And have libraries compatibles with all apple devices until data.
And have ability to download OS from apple servers, extract them and update the devices.
And edit tags
And have visualizers

Should I go on?
>>
>>61482280
Yeah... kinda like Emacs. it includes everything because it has to work across new and old version of macOS and new and old versions of Windows. And it has to look the same to preserve brand.

It's also written in C++ (not Objective-C like most older Mac apps). Windows version was compiled with MSVC.

I remember extracting a bunch of art out of last year... used the art in mockups I was making at the time. Even the drag & drop art was in there which tells me that they had to implement an OS-independent version for it.

>All mac apps are like this. They are so simple to install (drag and drop) because they are containers holding everything they need to run.
Not really... most apps rely on OS frameworks (otherwise they'd each be 100MB+ in size).

What you probably mean is that they're a single package. That's called an app bundle. It's just a special folder with executables, libs, localization files and art in it... and you can just copy/drag that stuff around and it will work.
>>
>>61482405
They are also good places to hide porn. Nobody normal will ask why your copy of garageband.app is 100gb.
>>
>>61482424
lol'd. genius. just don't change any files because that will fuck up sha-256 of them and they won't run. but extra files in there do no harm.
>>
>>61481808
>Can play every media file know to man

Seriously though, it even plays .sid files, which are actually straight up ASM.
>>
>>61482424
Oh no, my secret is out!
It's also great because it hides the files from finder's "Recent Files" category.
>>
>by far the worst thing on a mac
>still better than most of microsofts default programs

but seriously, when are they splitting it into multiple apps for movies etc
>>
>>61482536
>but seriously, when are they splitting it into multiple apps for movies etc

Why would they do that?
Splitting it up would make syncing iphones/ipads a hell of a lot more complicated.
>>
>>61482494
no they're not, they're machine code
>>
>>61482617
Still though.
>>
>>61482357
I have literally never touched my mpv config file
>>
>>61483390
all it's doing is using a library/codec which emulates the SID processor, which runs the program and outputs sound
as far as VLC or any other media player is concerned, file goes in, sound comes out, just like any other codec
>>
>>61481808

Yes, but the fact that they even bothered to support it is astonishing.
Not that I mind though, I like my sid tunes.

>>61483430
I don't know. I can't find much information on that beyond a post from 2015 with a dev saying they might implement support.

With foobar there's no risk corrupting your PC and music collection with what many consider the invasive, bloated, slow, buggy, in-your-face Apple Profit Center piece of Malware otherwise known as iTunes for Windows.

>Apple pioneers buying music as a service with DRM-riddled music files that you don't legally own
>Not enough for them
>Literally stealing music from you so you're forced to use their service
Stuff like this makes me think about how we're not really taking the digital age seriously. This is the equivalent of Apple just breaking into your house, stealing your CDs, and saying they'll play whatever you want as long as you can ring them up and politely ask them to play any of the music they stole from you. Amazing.
>>
Flac support never.
