Hey /g/
which fan would you recommend?

Obviously the BeQuiet! fan looks miles better than the Noctua.
>>
/g/ keeps saying that Noctua is just a big meme these days. I wouldn't be surprised if the BeQuiet was actually the better cooler too.
>>
>>61477220
>looks miles better
fuck off back to >>>/v/ manchild. you're an embarrassment to your whole family.
>>
>which fan would you recommend?
the one that is rated more highly using objective metrics
which usually turns out to not be poofans
>>
>>61477240
Anybody who owns them knows they're worth the premium, people calling them a meme are the ones unwilling to pay $20/fan
NH-D15 has been proven to be one of the best heatsinks on the market for years now
>>
>>61477220
I own the NH-D15, and I can vouch that it is awesome. I never hear the fucking thing and it cools well. I'd give the NH-D15 an edge without even owning the Dark Rock because the NH-D15 has those cutouts in the bottom to account for RAM height as well. Plus Noctua offers free upgrade kits for life for mounting brackets. Noctua isn't a meme, they're not like miles ahead of everyone or anything, but they are great with support and with what they offer. If you care that much about the color, chances are you're a windowed case faggot and should probably kill yourself anyway.
>>
>>61477220
The D15 or the X62 Kraken
I will be overclocking and I have tinnitus so noise won't bother me too much
>>
>>61477407
D15
AIO:s are for aesthetics only. They don't have substantial performance gains over huge heatsinks like D15 or Dark Rock Pro. They have more moving parts, so more risk of breaking down and more noise. Also there is no heatsink to protect your CPU if it dies, unlike in a traditional air cooler.
>>
>>61477220

NH-D15 owner here. It's good housefire protection. But if you go with the yid, you must delid.

Why do these only have 2 fans instead of 3?

3 fans at 800 rpm > 2 fans at 1200rpm in everything from airflow to noise
>>
>>61477533
That's my reasoning as well. Does it hold true for GPUs too? My planned D15 setup is actually a few dollarydoos more expensive than my AIO setup because I plan to replace the two stock fans with two noctua industrial fans and put the stock ones as intake in the case.
>>
>>61477255

:\

I care about aesthetics. Don't be a bitch. Also they're the same exact price.

>>61477275

The Noctua does a little better, but is louder.

>>61477338
Thanks <3

>>61477605
No deliding here. It's for a stock 7820x (no bully pls)

>>61477614
That actually....looks seksy

>>61477622
I guess the 3rd fan is the exhaust on a case? that just pulls the hot air out from the two on the CPU cooler.
>>
>>61477622
Diameter is much more important than either of those things.

The Noctua it is then.
>>
>>61477220
dark rock pro 3 is quite a bit worse compared to d15 in regards to perfomance, if you want middleground then get d15 and buy different fans for it
>>
>>61478059
Isn't the 7820x which OP wants a housefire?
>>
>>61477769

R1 copper, a san ace 38mm thicc fan at the front (and the two stock fans filling middle and rear) would probably air cool skylake-x.
>>
btw what does /g/ think about Yate Loon fans?
>>
>>61477220
Despite looking ugly D15 for sure.

My D15 keeps my 4790k @ 4.7 ghz cool no problem, even without delidding it. It's so quiet I never hear, and even if you had the fans off it would still function as a passive cooler decently.
>>
>active cooling

Pic related (without the fan) is rated for 95w passive so you can run an 1800x off it passively. With fan its rated for over 300w.
>>
>>61478343
Won't that snap my motherboard?
>>
Has no one seriously came up with a passive heatsink like 30cm wide with plenty of copper and 12 heatpipes?
>>
>>61478392
Its not as heavy as you think, and with proper mounting it won't cause any issues.

Of course you can always go horizontal too
>>
D15 makes swirling noises, DO NOT BUY THIS HEATSINK.

noctua color and price is too much and its barely any better to make up for it.
>>
>>61478343
this or the DH15?
>>
>>61478407
Passive heat sinks are dumb because they only work in cases with plenty airflow ie with strong thus noisy case fans.

Plus a low rpm fan in the middle of your case is most likely completely inaudible.
>>
Relevant question,

What happened to tuniq and prolimatech? When they came out with coolers they were the go to coolers. I have a megahalams and I know people who have had tuniq towers, they were really popular, why aren't people using them in modern systems? If I had an adapter bracket for am4, I would mount my prolimatech, but prolimatech has pretty much gone off the map.
>>
>>61479858
Macho is a best price/perf option out there, but d15 is top-notch. Entirely up to you and your wallet.
>>
>>61477220
Get the NH-D15S.
The S variant is offset so it doesn't block the first PCIe slot.
>>
>>61480270
Nigga it's $79 vs $88
>>
>>61480319
Can't find the S version anywhere. Tried Amazon.

D15S has one 140mm fan wtf?

Is that bad? The regular D15 has 2.
>>
>>61477220
They both perform within margin of error. The BeQuiet is significantly quieter but also more expensive.
>>
>>61481061
They're both the same price, anon. $89

The DH15S looks good to me cuz it's offset. But it's $79 and only come with one fan instead of 2 on the DH15 (You have to buy a separate fan if you want 2 total)

I have literally never seen a copper heat sink oxidize, and I've seen some that have been in use for 20 years. Moisture cannot form if the heat sink is warmer than the surrounding air.
>>
noctuas colors are horrible but the nhd15 is the shit
>>
>>61477622
In the majority of cases the rear heatsink is so close to the cases rear exhaust fan that there is either no room for another fan or the fan would basically be touching the rear exhaust fan creating turbulence.
>>
I bought an ugly cooler master cooler and painted it with oven paint, then used the corsair fans with the swappable ring colors. Turned out very nice.
>>
Where does the line get drawn where air cooling becomes a meme and you should look to water cooling
>>
>>61481792
When you're willing to pay for it, usually.

That said anything under 200€,including hybrids, is shit.
>>
>>61481792
Only if you get Skylake-X
>>
>>61477220
Whichever one is cheaper and meets thermal requirements. People make too much of fans.
>>
>>61481856
Shut the heck up.

Noise and heat matters. Even 1c.
>>
>>61477681
Why did you even bother paying $700 for that thing? Do you enjoy exploding motherboards?

Also, if noise is a factor for you. The be quiet is ironically not so quiet when thermal loads get to it's limit.
>>
>>61481601
Only problem I have with this cooler is ram clearance.
>>
What's a good budget cooler? I see this deepcool brand in my country. It's either that or the cheapest coolermaster since I'm on a tight budget because everything costs triple here.

That's irrelevant. If your cooler dies your cpu will auto shut down if it hits a certain temp before there's any damage
>>
>>61482183
>$599
>Not $700

I went with the DH15S and bought an additional fan, came out to like $99. Oh well. Worth it.

I love Noctua.
>>
>>61482313
Oh, weird. Couldn't remember the price and the first one to come up was 678.75. Guess that's what I get for trusting B&H photo pricing. It's an excellent cooler, don't bother with fan curves, just let them run 100%. Won't make more noise than a low hum.
>>
Be quiet has a shit installation system. Otherwise it's great. If it's your first time installing one, it might take a few minutes to figure out.

Air cooling is never a meme. It's really what point does liquid cooling stop being a meme. And that's custom loops.
>>
>>61482547
I had the same experience, they need to include an angled wrench and it would be much better. Trying to tighten those fucking nuts around the VRM heatsink was a pain in the ass. Or just use Noctua's mounting system because it's so much easier

How does this liquid cooler compare to these air coolers? I personally have a NH-D15 but I am thinking of upgrading to water.

Thoughts?
>>
>>61483761
I'll never try AIOs because of their potential leakage.
>>
>>61483777

is that really a concern?
>>
>>61483761
Their performance is within the margin of error, so it's not really much of an upgrade. I only recommend AIOs if you are using some SFF case which can't support a decent tower cooler but has room for an AIO.
>>
>>61478108
Fuck the San Ace. Feser Triebwerk is where it's at. 55mm thick and 2800 RPM.
>>
>>61483831
It's not. There's even less risk with an AIO than there is with a custom loop, and the risk from those is still negligible to a non-retard.
>>
>>61483761
I have a H80i in my skylake cuz the DH15 was blocking my 1st PCIe lane in my mATX case. And also the size is ridiculous.

So I stick with AIO for now.

But look at the benchmarks, the DH15 is close in terms of performance to the AIOs.

>>
the dark rock pro 3 is actually less effective than the single fan version
>>
>>61477533

wait wait wait

i've got a 280mm Corsair AIO and it's fantastic. it's almost silent, it keeps my cpu at low temps, and it allows a lot more air to move around in the case for my GPU and motherboard

Made me wonder if that heatsink design is to better distribute the circular fan airflow or soemthing and if it actually works.

Been using a DH-15 since 2011 and tbqh they are the go to of air coolers, but only if you've got the room to accommodate their fucking huge size.

Hope it won't kill the CPU eventually, but it probably will, innnit.
>>
>>61483852
I agree with this.

>>61483831
A slight bit.
The bigger concern is that many AIOs have been using anti-corrosive additives that turn to plastic under heat. So the heatsink gets covered in plastic and stops conducting heat well.

>>61484503
Uhh depends. With a custom loop you control all the variables. You can't control a random manufacturing defect that goes unnoticed on an AIO.
