just how bad, broken and unreliable would it be to make a messaging app 100% from scratch?

the sytem for receiving notifications would simply be to poll the server continuously.

what aresome better, FLOSS ways to do this? it will probaly be hosted on a raspberry pi and have a Qt app as a front end in the beginning.
