Why don't software competitors just copy/paste code when their rival adds a successful new feature and tweak it a little to avoid copyright laws?

Because they don't have the source code and because its illegal.

Plenty of companies do do this though, but more with free software.

If you just blatantly copy something, and are successful enough, you'll get sued as well.
>>

Because competitive software isn't open source? What kind of stupid question is that?
>>
>>61409786
You can just reverse engineer it
>>
>>61409733
because that would be just as much work as programming it yourself.

>machine code and disassemblers don't exist
Fucking retards.
>>
Depends where you are.

In EU you can reverse engineer software for the purpose of interoperability, but you can't do it to create a competing product.

Not sure about bongistan.
>>

Lmao, good luck trying to maintain and fix bugs in code from a disassembler.
>>
>>61409836
OH oh ohhh look at this small little faggot here. I bet you nobody has thought that before you.

Fucking autistic little shit
>>
>>61409733
>tweak it a little
Derived code is still under the original copyright.

Messing with somebody else's closed source is just a bad idea in general if you plan to actually plan to make money or get get FOSS community support.

Microcomputer copycats tried this in the 80's when they tried to lift code off the IBM BIOS. They wound up aping the easter eggs in the microcode and were successfully sued time and again. It wasn't until American Megatrends or whoever finally made a clean room implementation that IBM was able to be beaten in court.
>>
>>61409800
It's usually less effort to just write your own implementation.

>>61409836
Disassemblers exist, but good luck integrating it into your own codebase. It's more trouble than it's worth.
>>
>>61409786
you are a bad person
