If a document is in US English, why not use 5 bits for each character instead of 8?

0-31 means 26 letters plus
.!;,'
and whitespace. Quotes can be two apostrophes. Literally nothing else is needed.

All these years we've been cucking ourselves with extra bits for nothing. Think about all the space we could save.

You used numbers in your text, what about that?

Find a thing that all these words from your retarded keyboard vomit have in common and why you could not write it with your proposal.

Vowels? You're a fucking retard. Stop browsing any time.

Numbers could be written like ''one'' ''two'' ''three'' or as Roman numerals.

Capital letters are largely vestigial in written communication

> enforces capitalization of 'I' pronoun regardless of its place in sentence
> abbreviation fetish without enforcing periods
just use gzip

>hey guys now that bits are infinitesimal fractions of a penny why don’t we sacrifice clarity and the ability to write questions, parentheticals, and words with diacritical marks to save space in one of the most highly compressible areas?

this is a troll

Because then you'd have alignment issues
Each byte now stores 1.6 characters, so interpreting a block of memory would require the address so you could calculate the offset where to start reading correctly and it would be a clusterfuck to manage.

It needs to be a power of 2.

to be fair, you could design a 6-bit-byte architecture. 5 wouldn't work, even deciding to live without numbers and mathematical operators you need eol and eof control characters unless you want to obliterate your savings space-pad ding every line to 80 and then every file to end of allocation unit.

in return for innate text compression that's several times less efficient than just putting them in a damn zip, you'd get a literal burger-only computer that couldn't even be used in england or canada, that would need a custom cpu and ram, and that would need its own snowflake programming language and intensive effort to even cross-compile for.
