Im setting up a server on an old desktop (for hosting whatever I feel like, ftp, web, irc). Its not too old, runs windy 7 ok, and I've tried ubuntu server in the past but it seemed pretty bloated. I've heard a lot of good stuff about debian but Im curious what /g/ recommends.

Itll be headless, so what distro would you guys rec?

Rolling release is manageable for a small number of servers as long as you stay on top of updates and carefully read release notes.

With Gentoo in particular, dependency issues tend to crop up over time which take a lot of manual effort to correct, especially since every system ends up slightly different. If you put off updates for too long, you potentially lose your upgrade path.

When I started my current job (last year), we had a mostly Gentoo environment, which had been built in 2004(?) and not patched since 2008. Upgrading would have required intermediate stages which have been lost to time. We had to completely scrap them and migrate to new services, which would have been a lot easier if they had been RHEL/CentOS 4 boxes, since the differences between releases are well documented and things don't change too much within a release.
