VPNs are essentially really long cables that allow you to be a member of a smaller network over the internet. The intent of this configuration depend on the network that you're connecting to. If you want anonymity, that's where all of these VPN services come in (hide my ass, nordVPN, etc). If you wanna connect to your work network from home or anywhere else in the world, VPNs allow you to do that.

By "really long cable", I mean a secure, encrypted connection between your network/computer to another.
