We are starting a hub for anons interested in VR. All text is a WIP.

>What is VR? Why should I care?
Virtual reality seeks to fool your perceptual systems into believing that you're in a different world. It's been a sci-fi meme for decades that once was even attempted and failed, but consumer technology has advanced to the point where it's now possible.

This thread isn't for you. Go shitpost somewhere else. If you're genuinely curious about VR, keep reading to learn more, and post if you have questions.

>I'm not sure I believe the hype.
The only way to truly understand VR is to experience it. If you're skeptical, try a live demo and make up your own mind. Or keep reading for a comprehensive intro.

Not sure why you consider Samsung Gear VR "dogshit chink tier" or uncomfortable; maybe you aren't wearing it right?

I got a Gear VR to go with my S8 about a month ago and I love it. It's lighter than any desktop PC headset, and more comfortable than Cardboard (although Cardboard is a really low bar, because it's literally made out of cardboard).

I can wear my Gear VR for 2+ hours without getting uncomfortable at all. The completely wireless VR experience is awesome IMO.

Biggest drawbacks are
>locked into Oculus store (although there are ways around this)
>only one hand controller
>have to own a Samsung phone for the Gear VR to even be an option

The last one isn't necessarily a drawback if you like Samsung phones (which I do), so it wasn't a drawback for me.

VR will be the future it does 3D and then some. It's in it's infancy right now. Give it 4 years and it will be 300$ or even 250$ with tons of advancements. A ton of people said the same about Smartphones how it was not needed and how it will die because everyone already had those things. VR does not have the same problems 3D had.

Not blender, not that complex yet, but MS Paint level equivalents exist. Google Tiltbrush, Google Blocks, Oculus Medium, Oculus Quill, they all do things differently but are generally like modeling or painting in 3D.

For real though, it's not true anymore. The games are still limited but it's enough to justify the price of VR now. The only laughable thing is how badly VR is marketed. DESU the real problem of VR now isn't the quality or the price or the content anymore, it's getting people to understand how much better the perceptual qualities of VR are than monitors.

But saying this to you will absolutely be a waste since you've already decided to let VR be a meme in your head.

I've tried VR faggot. It's cool the first time, but once you've been playing around for an hour or so, you get bored of it. My friends Rift has been gathering dust for months. It will never replace 2D screens, and it's obvious after using VR for more than 5 minutes.
>>
>>61304184
For a shit tier Rift perhaps. If you're gonna buy into the meme, might as well get a proper set like the Vive.
>>
>>61304211
Nah, you tried a shitty demo. And your friend is actually retarded to have bought so early. That was a shitty time for software.
>>
>>61304225
That's a meme too. Most real owners of both headsets as well as enthusiasts see them a lot more similar than they are different. The perception of the Vive being better in all ways than the Rift is a misconception.

>your opinion is pretty much contrary to the majority of children who are actually getting the systems gifted from their parents
FTFY

It's a fun little toy, I'm not denying that. It's just not very impressive, the most fun I had in VR was playing superhot, and that game is not very good at all. Most other games are glorified minigames. Besides the games being shit, the whole thing is just inconvenient. You have to wear this huge thing on your head, you can't easily take a sip/bite/smoke while playing. It becomes a drag very quickly. Again, it will never replace 2D screens, and you're literally insane if you think otherwise.
>>
>>61304427
The reviews for the products on all the vendor websites would disagree with you.

VR tourism will be a thing in 5-7 years won't it?

Just strap a go pro to some bangledeshi boy, charge one tenth the price of a "vacation", put an earpiece in his ear "I want to see that", set it up through paypal that you can pay for shit, boom your summer vacation and you never leave the house.

No, I'm saying the majority of consumer opinion is better, which it is, because it literally represents what most people think.
>>
>>61304691

hence the 5-7 years preface.

But I think streaming 360 degrees at 720 is not terribly far away. And this will give carriers real justification for upgrading infrastructure, most people don't even need or see the relative advantage of 4G LTE. Granted, if someone were doing this over cell, there'd need to be more unlimited plans.
>>

>I'm saying the majority of meme buyers opinion is better, which it is, because it literally represents what most other meme buyers think.
FTFY, just because there is a bunch of you doesn't make it the majority opinion dumbass. Most people have NOT bought into the meme, because they agree with me.
>>
>>61304699

Yes, but, if the trip itself were a factor of ten less than actually going there, it would lead to more consumerism.

Have a "guide" with a bunch of cash. Link in your paypal, go to villages and buy shit and have it shipped to you.

I could honestly see this as a win win situation. It would provide income for more remote regions and facilitate infrastructure creation; because if it becomes that easy to see these places, you know governments will want to put on their best face for Westerners AND want uninterrupted feeds of the vacations.
>>
>>61304769
lmfao, how can watching a video ever replace actually going there? You're either very dumb or you just don't like traveling.
>>
>>61304793

Yes, and you're looking at a consumerism driven culture that has simultaneously had its purchasing power depressed, while cost rises.

People want those experiences, but by and large can't afford it. I'm not saying it will REPLACE tourism, but could provide an alternative for people who want to see those places on a more individual level, but just can't afford it.

Your argument makes no sense, it's like telling the creators of BBC's Planet Earth, "lol why the fuck would anyone buy your movie, when they can just go to these remote locations!"
>>
>>61304833
>lol why the fuck would anyone buy your movie, when they can just go to these remote locations

>People want those experiences
Yes, and VR doesn't provide them. That's the point.

I don't have depth perception and can't see 3D. Basically, my eyes aren't 'synced' to one another, they kinda see independently.

If you like what VR currently is and are fine with the limitations, sure. But you should be aware of everything before you decide anything. Ultimately we can only provide information and the judgement is for you to decide. Read the intro paste to understand pretty much everything you need to know about where VR currently is at, and where it's going in a year or two.

We're actually both right and wrong. So you spurred me to go find some more objective information about consumer opinions. So far this is what I've found:

>The study found that many consumers increased their familiarity and interest in VR technology with as little as 2 minutes of exposure to content. In fact, just over 50% of viewers showed some increase in their likelihood of purchasing or using VR technology after their brief informational experience. If these participants were to learn even more about VR, it’s reasonable to expect that their attitudes would evolve even further. Additionally, 48% of consumers considered VR more likeable after learning more about it, as well as 48% that were more likely to look up more information afterward. A separate Nielsen Media Lab study used a similar methodology, but instead exposed over 150 respondents to content in a virtual reality headset, resulting in an even greater impact: 68% identified as more likely to purchase or use virtual reality technology after the experience. These shifts in intent demonstrate how more education and exposure will continue to change consumer attitudes about virtual reality.

>Look, more opinions!
wew lad, still never going to replace 2D screen gaming though.
>>
>>61305284
>as little as 2 minutes of exposure to content
I agree, the first 5 minutes you're overwhelmed by VR. After 15 minutes that feeling is gone. After 30 minutes you're wondering, is this all?
>>
>>61304974
Aw that sucks. You'd still get head tracking though.
>>
Vive is expensive AF
>>
>>61305309
I never even mentioned replacing 2D games. My point is that it's not as bad as you or the other guy is saying. Or maybe you're the same guy I don't know. Personally I think your claim of VR not replacing 2D gaming is correct, but headsets will replace the majority of monitors for people come 2030 when the headsets are like $100, ultra high res, and are a small pair of goggles.

>>61305362
The 2 minute exposure is to informational content, not the actual experience. Unless we find objective studies that show consumer opinion after 15-30 minutes of in-VR exposure, neither of us can say what the opinion is for the majority of people.

VR is a dead meme. Call me when I can buy a rift including the controllers for 300 bucks and every $120 GPU can run 1440@120hz.
>>
>>61305516
>your claim of VR not replacing 2D gaming is correct
Good, that's literally the only thing I've been telling you.

>headsets will replace the majority of monitors for people
lol, no, no they won't. It's a niche market and will always remain one. People enjoy watching movies together, this includes occasionally looking at each other and talking, no sane person is going to buy VR headsets for the whole family to watch 2D movies on. VR headsets will not replace 2D screens ever, not for gaming, not for movies, for literally nothing.

>studies
Your desperate search to find other peoples' opinions to validate your own just shows how much you're denying the facts right in front of you.
>>
shit, why must facebook tempt me with their sale of rift. told myself that i would wait, but this makes it hard to do.

You keep saying that as if it makes your opinions any more valid than others'. Sure maybe I'm a fanboy, but you're sure as hell not an objective authority either.

Can I play VR games from my PC with a Samsung Gear VR? I'm not expecting it to be as good as an actual Oculus but I'd like to get a taste of VR.

I'm sure Apple will release their own headset in the next 2 years. Probably a phone VR device rather than standalone. Then VR will be every where.
>>
>>61306874
That would be pretty good to get mainstream adoption, but perhaps a necessary evil as well. To be desu though pretty much all companies are shitty and should be hated. Apple really isn't that bad.

Check out RiftCat. It's compatibble with SteamVR and some other shit, but it's also only rotational tracking, so don't expect to walk around your room.
>>
>>61306464
honestly it won't be as far off as you might expect, in spite of the high-sounding resolutions modern VR headsets it's still not enough to give you a clear experience
I tried VR on a G6 side-by-size with the Vive and the image wasn't a heck of a lot better

DK2 for race sims like assetto/Pcars/Dirt?

Is this a good idea or should i keep waiting for VR to get better?
>>
>>61312341
If you're going to do race sims only, actually I'd suggest waiting for the Microsoft Mixed Reality headsets. They're going to be cheaper than current headsets, and they're going to be better than the DK2. Just wait for the end of the year.
