I agree.

I want to set up a bunch of raspberry pis connected to free wifi across my city for various purposes. What would be the best way to do this, and actually hide it? I can't think of anything not getting picked up and thrown away or destroyed within a week (aside from literally burying them underground)
>>
>>61265565
Are they worth their money?
>>
>>61265635
The pis? I have a zero and i like it a lot. Haven't played with any of the bigger ones since I haven't needed them. Too bad the zeroes are never in stock anywhere
>>
>>61265498
I've used it. It's very informative and a good prep, but there is always new stuff to learn outside of those courses. So always accompany research outside of watching those lessons.

I suppose they're good if you can't be hassled with learning electronics and making a similar device as a project.

I do enjoy that this subject is largely lost on /v/ictims and so they only occasionally come in here to shitpost and espouse:

OK now I'm scared, do VPN's actually help or are they a meme?
>>
>>61266410
Paid VPNs with good policy and in a 'smart' location are good, yes.
They literally encrypt your traffic and give you a different IP.
Your ISP will be able to tell you're using a VPN, but not the traffic, so long as DNS requests are going the VPN too and aren't to compromised DNS servers.
You dig?

When Hiding small objects in an urban environment, the key is to make the drop point uninteresting. Uninteresting places are rarely discovered by civilians and governments do not have time to turn over every rock in a particular city. For theses reasons, the undersides of dumpsters make exceptional hididng places. Objects placed underneath them may go undiscovered for months.

Or just go geocaching if you want to learn how to hide shit.
>>
>>61267507
This is an excellent idea.

>>61265565
What're your plans for them, generally?
>>
>>61267507
idk if this would work because even dumpsters get emptied and moved around, leaving the item exposed and/or crushed
>>
>>61266825
I've been forcing encryption this whole time (I'm using Deluge if that matters).

To my knowledge, as long as your IP address is known to be seeding a certain thing lawyers can send threatening letters to your ISP, encryption or no.

So you find multiple minor security risks for the sake of convenience (ie online purchasing) an acceptable sacrifice?

Yeah, because the only risk in IDing you through monitor size and/or hardware implants, which I'd notice after I take it apart and inspect it.
So, it isn't really as much of an issue...
>>
>>61269200
The issue is inputting your address and possibly name/payment info, which seems to go against your whole thing here.
>>
>>61269209
You keep your lives seperate, so crossover isn't an issue, unless they'd connect monitor size and you.
Which is fairly esoteric.

>>>61260666 (replying to question from the last thread)
1) Anon, sorry for the late reply; I am up to my neck in work right now; I will answer 1/2 your question now and 1/2 later.
2) I am heavily utilized by my employer, so it is not unusual for me to be involved in 5-7 high priority projects at a time.
3) Thus, I can easily work 50-60 hours a week sometimes. I like to maximize my time and development, so I will eat lunch in my lab I usually re-watch interesting con talks, technical lectures or listen to that weeks Off the Hook or Off the Wall.
4) After work, I use a training method that uses penetration testing as a base. I remote into a host located in any number of multiple converged infrastructure/Unified Computing Systems (a.k.a, UCS or domain -in –a-box) like solutions or servers utilizing Hyper-V Manager.
3) These boxes contain fully virtualized Windows AD Domains with a multitude of security solutions/products installed amongst the domain hosts, servers, DCs, PDC(s) and some industrial control systems, Linux/Unix/Unix-like clients/servers running at different levels of virtualization.
4) None of the systems are vulnerable by design (some may be a bit behind on updates). Real world IT mistakes happen sometimes, such as vulnerable test machines being left up.
5) Most times I remote into a new host and am completely ignorant to the configurations, products and technologies within that domain.
6) So I attack the domain; this for me is the equivalent of sparring: I am looking for weaknesses or lapses of knowledge in myself as I look for them in my opponent (the domain).
7) During this I search with Startpage (or Google if necessary) anything I find interesting or perplexing in the domain. I make notes (ctrl c and ctrl v to text files) and bookmark sites that could be valuable later. There is no pressure or time limit on the attack, so I take my time during this process.
>>
>>>61260666 → (cont'd)
8) This process is more about learning than exploiting; I may read 4 or 5 different articles concerning an issue or point of interest. I am looking to plug gaps in my understanding; if I am going to employ an archaic or new tool, exploit, program or script, I read as much as I can about it (after looking at its programming of course) and will not deploy it until I have a thorough understanding as to how it works.
9) If I find a tool, exploit, program or script that I find I may use a portion of these training sessions to incorporate it/them into my workflow while seeking to judge its strengths, limitations and possible impact on network infrastructure
10) The impact on network infrastructure consideration is very important: you may want your test to bring down the house, but you don’t literally want it to bring down the house. Thus, I may practice using a tool, exploit, program or script repeatedly to test out/get a feel for its functionality and options before ever introducing it to my employer or a client’s environment.
11) Another reason why I make good use of live drilling/training: once you gain ingress onto a target’s LAN or physical property, your chances of being detected are no longer 0.00%. Training and preparedness increase efficiency which decreases wasted time or actions, lessening probability of detection
11) Each second and action you take, you raise the probability of detection. For a hacker/activist, detection can lead to federal confinement and stiff financial penalties (Stephen Watt is an example of this ridiculousness). For a pentester, the result can range from a bruised ego to a happy customer to a loss of customer confidence (latter is likely especially if you were cauht early in an engagement due to carelessness/lack of preparation).
>>
>>61269771
Wait...you train in your spare time by actually doing red team attacks on real companies?
>>
>>>61260666
12) During a training session I may gain a Meterpreter shell then utilize random Metasploit post exploitation modules that I have never utilized before. I may wander around the file system of an Industrial Control station I’ve exploited for hours. It is all about learning and experimenting, but not cutting corners when doing either: learn why things are happening as they are.
13) Usually try to keep these training sessions around 4 hours long (time flies when you are having fun). Often, they end when I am catch an unexpected glimpse of dawn (time flies when you are having fun)
14) I have learned to live with 0 to 4 hours a couple days a week. I may catch a nap before the following evenings training session (I catch up on most of my sleep on the weekends). If what I am working that evening was especially interesting, I may pick up the next evening where I left the night before.
15) My current employer does not allow me to freelance in any way shape or form. Which is a shame, because for me, another great way to improve is to is to enumerate and attack some of the most secure systems/networks on Earth.
16) When I was pushing forward with my development in 2010ish, there was a (slowly) increasing number of (a few) vendor bounty programs (now called a bug bounty). Google had been doing so for awhile at that point. They were offering bounties and allowing most (it may have been all)of there domains to fall within scope.
17) Last I heard, Yahoo's bug bounty program has all of their domains within scope, including acquisitions.I used to take full advantage of these as training opportunities and a legal means to develop my skills attacking companies I despised.
18) Earlier in my career, most companies were very liberal with the access and scope they allowed participants. .I didn't graduate past the enumeration phase for for some time after I started using them for my training.

No.... I manage a Cyber Security Lab for a well known international business. The systems I attack for my training are systems that were repurposed for this purpose within my lab. One of the UCS in question could easily serve as the entire domain for a medium size company.

I apologize...I'm here to help and wouldn't intentionally overlook someones question hadn't seen your question. Let me go look at the question and I will get an answer right back to you.

No, I did not setup those particular machines the in my Lab...Also, the exact product in question isn't exactly a UCS or multiple converged infrastructure.
I work for a fair but conservative company.
The product in questions is unique to the industry of my employer, so I used what to my mind was the closest approximation to the technology in question.

I will be right back with your answer!

I want to get into the /sec/ field after I finish my comp sci degree. What things should I be learning on my free time? I don't really know where to start.

I'm already fairly competent at programming and I've taken some introductory networking courses so I know the protocols and the OSI model, and I'll be taking the advanced network and security courses in September. What can I do in the mean time to sharpen my knowledge and prepare myself for a career?
>>
>>61270336
Oh shit man I'm sorry... I was working and wrote the answer I just posted for the other Anon, but missed that one due to the page change and the guy answering the question below you.

I feel like a dick... so I'm going to assume this one was yours:

"The sheer amount of knowledge you have is clear why you command such a role in the field.

But what sort of roles exist for people who aren't as cluey as you?

I want to move into sec because it interests me. I'd like to do it fairly soon, and it's what I'm banking my entire existence on by moving to a major city in the next 12 months.

Literally all I've got is a few years of being a level 2 tech, an IT degree that if someone looked into it deep enough would see is absolute trash, and studies from textbooks.

How do you even break into a field that sounds like it's dominated by literal top guns? What are the entry level positions in infosec?"

Now I am going to open a reply so I can give you the space the question deserves.. one sec...

1) The sheer amount of knowledge you have is clear why you command such a role in the field.

1) I just worked hard anon...I'm not a super genius, or a dude who went to college or any of that shit. I'm from a shit background from a shit city ranked as one of the most unsafe in the US.

2) But what sort of roles exist for people who aren't as cluey as you?

Cybersecurity right now has a huge hiring issue: a good portion of those who are hiring and managing the cybersecurity departments of many companies have maybe 3 to 4 years experience tops, and zero interest in improving their knowledge of the subject past where they have too to keep their jobs.

You have an IT degree.. Period. And in 12months of dedicated study, you can learn more about this field than just about anyone who doesn't give a shit.has in 3 or 4 easily.

I would go for something like a Network Security Analyst (i was a Network Security Analyst for 3 years; but really, apply for everything

Seriously man..I know wehn someone tells someone else to worry it never works. There are going to be plenty of managers who are so relieved to get somone with some applicable knowledge and interest hired that they are never going to look deep into your cert.

And you have 12 months to improve your skills.

With Cyb as my witness, you come here, you leave me questions or need help with anything, and I will help you however I can.

You can learn alot about this field in 12months.. And you have an IT degree/. You said you are betting your existence on it, so thats powerful motivation.

I'm going to continue this Anon, hold on..

Does it seem like a good start? It'll probably take a lot of time but I want a solid foundation before doing actual security.

I hope I am replying to the right question, or I am going to feel like a jackass.

"Literally all I've got is a few years of being a level 2 tech, an IT degree that if someone looked into it deep enough would see is absolute trash, and studies from textbooks.".

Many times, HR has no clue what the job is or what it entails, so they look at the requirements for a company like Booz Allen Hamilton and copy their requirements.

People get spooked by the requirements and the belief that everyone in this field is Mudge or Dan Kaminsky.

They aren't anon; the biggest secrets to getting your first Info/NetSec job is:

1) Apply to every job you see within reason (everything that is a Level 1 or JR, anything, or requests 1 to 3 years experience)

2) AT an interview, if you are meeting with the hiring manager and your future coworkers, , and you have a conversation with them that demonstrates your command of basic InfoSec/NetSec, if you show your passion and interest, you are very likely to get hired.

"How do you even break into a field that sounds like it's dominated by literal top guns? What are the entry level positions in infosec?"

Every company on the planet it seems needs cybersecurity professionals, and their are just not enough out their yet, let alone those of the calibre you believe many of them are..

The entry level names of positions depend on the company; a Network Secuirty Analyst at Secure Works is entry level, but that wasn't the case in my last position.

I understand your anger: this is like life and death for you, and you see me skipping your question and posting a huge reply to others.

Since you think I am LARPING: You come here, you prepare for 12 months, I (and likely others at times) will help you prepare. And I will even write you or serve as a reference. Just try to be less of a dick abut mistakes.

Breh I'm top gun guy, CCAr guy, hackers playbook guy. I matched your post style to your forum posts days ago. I know it's you, and I wouldn't cuss you out like that.

Take a high resolution picture of an area that would be of interest and we can comment that.

Yo can either make it look boring or official. Something like "Govt. property, removal under pains of death by night time death squads" tend to work.

Or that old "under construction" also works. There was an installation marked "under construction" with no visible activity for over a year near where I lived. Nobody ever cared, few noticed.

Streets are littered with anonymous looking boxes that are only inspected when a VIP is expected to travel past. Same with pylons, lines, signs, and hundreds of other types of infrastructure we never care about but that would have baffled anyone from 200 years ago.

Does anyone have some strategies they could share for efficiently auditing a black-box binary? Should I begin with static analysis using IDA to search for insecure code or should I go straight to fuzzing with something like radamsa?

How about common tools they personally like to use when analyzing a binary for vulnerabilities? I'm planning to explore Manticore and angr this weekend. This part of the info sec field can be pretty overwhelming at times, so any comments on work process/good resources would be much appreciated!

What are some of the more useful correlations y'all use when reviewing logs or searching in SIEM?
>>

This is a good question, hoping it gets an answer. I've been using a SIEM for a while but haven't done much complicated. Mostly watch dashboards and have alarms for user lockouts and the like.
>>
>>61280133
I've found that digging into a specific log over a longer period of time helps me "baseline" (even though it's not a true baseline, I know). Doing this helps me craft specific searches to make response times faster, but I haven't passed that hump of really correlating parameters across different sources yet.

It really is about just applying for as many jobs as possible, being somewhat personable in the interview as well as knowledgeable, interested and dedicated the field.
The level of dedication this field takes and the continued learning involved have become a meme or trope even to those managers who don't give a shit about the field.
Often, they will hire someone young and interested so they can co-opt their knowledge.

Two very senior managers do this to me kind of frequently (the two managers doing it do care about security at least).

The most senior one co-opted an exploitation technique I designed that completely owns one of our most important products. I found it working on my own side project off the clock, and they took it as a project they commisioned.

It sucks, but sometimes you need to feed the beasts to get where you need to be. Five years from now you generally get what you work for, and this will all be a dream.

If you need anything TPG, get ahold of me at 0x00 and I will help you anyway I can brother..

thinkpad x220 if you desire more power in your laptop, slightly more expensive but you can find some on great deals.

or a slightly cheaper x200 that is libreboot compatible and is less powerful than the x220, but you can find some for about 48 dollars or 40, got mine at a steal of 48. completely functional, just some lid discoloration.
>>

>>
>>61281042

I built one of these for less than $100 for external pentests; with Nethunter you get full access to Kali repos, which allows you add Debian repos. Anything that runs from a terminal will work on it. I use it all the time and never leave the house without it.

>>
>>61281470
It being a maker site is a big part of my belief in its importance. I believe he is introducing people (who otherwise wouldn't have been interested) to ideas like crypto and information security.

Also, many of his projects allow a person with very little hardware experience to produce tools that can aid them in gaining greater security and privacy in an age where they are dwindling, precious resources.

Also, when I say "one of the most important", I am also taking into account the scale of the internet: there are approx 644 million sites, thus, there could be at least 100,000 or more sites I believe are as important or more important.

But in the scope of what I have seen oin that 644 million, what he provides for free to the public are extremely valuable.
>>
"crypto and information security"

I meant crypto and general information security since crypto by it's very nature is information security.

What a country arrest people for depends normally entirely on domestic industry.

Japan will defend manga/anime, the US will not care much. If you pirate Hollywood movies you get the firing squad.

Italy care for very little but woe betide if you wear fake designer clothes/shoes/watches. The police will rip the clothing off you.

for all the talk about the military industrial complex reality is that most US export comes from Hollywood, computer games and porn. The latter is probably aggregated with movies to avoid embarrassment. Thus that is what the US will rope you in for.

Sure? it is a couple of years since I lived in the UK but grades sure used to count. A lot. Especially for your first job after graduation, And £20k isn't that much, especially if you have to live in or near London.

That fist line suggests a .go.uk job which means you need clearance.

That salary seems pretty bad already.

I it is Malvern I guess it would be reasonably low cost of living. London is very, very expensive.

Mind you, the British authorities considers tech dudes even more expendable than the Americans do. Your retirement plan might be paid in lead.

I still remember a British reporter, obviously under a D-message, stating with the unique British wryness that the the deceased had committed suicide by shooting himself 3 times in the head. Never have I seen someone hint so much in so few words.

CS degree or a degree in Computer Networking?
My local CC offers so many fucking things for networking, even classes for certs. Naturally I'm interested in that. But if I were to go with CS I'd have to look for another college that offers a transfer degree in that major because I would love to go to a uni for that.
Just asking for advice since I really want to break into the sec field, and soon because the fall semester is coming up.
>>
>>61294449
Are you cyber? Then good luck. You're going to struggle to get a security clearance because you're English. I'm in Aus and my linage brought up red flags for my clearance, and I've never left the fucking country, let alone migrated across the sea like you want to.

>>61294407
I am sure in the way that I have been out of uni for 4 years now and not a single interviewer has ever asked about my gpa or how uni was. They all want experience for the job and that's all. I could have a degree in crackpottery for all they cared, they just wanted me to have skills.

I have never been involved in a red team engagement where we were allowed to break into a client' facility after hours.

However, I grew up and live in a city with one of the highest crime rates in the nation, one of the highest rates of unemployment for most of my life, and which is also believed to have one of the highest populations of opiate abusers vs. total population in the world.

I have or had a few childhood friends who as adult excelled in B&E into businesses. They weren't drug abusers or they would have been caught sooner(junkies have no patience). They never did residential jobs due to philosophical reasons & payout vs. % of gun ownership in my area; some of them pulled off some stuff that amazed me to the same degree that it disgusted me.

My study and their experiences strongly point at research, preparation, confidence, speed (celerity, not the drug),study and not shitting where you sleep as being the key contributors.
Fortunately, most of these people have gone straight in the last 5-10 years (or died); Many of the most "succesful" made good use of services like Google Earth and digital recon very much like what you would use in preparing a phishing or other social media campaign combined with physical recon.

As I said, I try to learn fro every source I can.

>>61294346

I like the n-o-d-e Youtube segments...they are quick, the information takes center stage. not the personality. and the production aesthetic is nice (not overdone, not jarring).

While I have some huge issues with Google, sometimes you need to use a shit platform to get your message across.

I have never larped (though I hadfriends who have), though I have played pen&paper RPGs when I was younger(D&D 2nd/3rd edition, WHite Wolf 2nd edition, but no Cyberpunk or Rifts sadly).

What are the possible legal repercussions on people doing B&E? Considering you don't kill anyone.

Also I really like redteaming but I feel I'd get caught too often since I pretty much look like a russian dude. Decently fit and average height though. Can lie really well.
>>
>>61295735
The reprecussions really dpend on so many factors...in the US (to my knowledge), there is a huge difference penalty wise between B&E during the daylight and evening.

Also, theft over $250 dollars is a felony...it really depends on the prosecutor as well. SOme of them can get creative with application of laws/circumstances with nailing an ass to the wall.

Many times in a red team engagement each person on your team has a specific role. Many times you may send a specialist into the facility while the remainder of you may be working from the parking lot or an adjacent building.

I also stick out a bit, so I am not a good choice for physical infiltration. However, I worked for years in telemarketing/custom service before getting into InfoSec/NetSec, so I may pick up the phone if necssary.

Much of this business is making what you have work for you and consistently building on it and your weaknesses.

How secure is Mint vs Ubuntu? I'm too much of an idiot to manage to get Clover Gentoo or Arch working right, and from what I heard Mint would probably work better on what I'm trying to put it on.

How big are red teams usually? Because maybe it's just me having lack of trust in others but I barely see it working with more than 3 or even maybe 3, without counting those that aren't physically there.

Also maybe appareance can be fixed a bit with proper clothing? I feel that when I wear suits I look like I'm from a russian mafia (people keep telling me that), but with a bit of a casual look it eases up quite a lot. Guess I'll have more than enough time for worrying about that in the future, since I'm still a huge scrub.
>>
>>61295928
mint is a distro that provides it's own stuff on top of ubuntu which is on top of debian. they also blacklist some updates so it works.
at least if ubuntu does it, they have a team working on it, not some select devs. not sure who in their right mind would call mint secure.

Read the pasta.
Absorb the information interred within.
Read many books covering /sec/ and /cyb/ if you enjoy the latters aesthetic and real world implications.
Train hard in things such as electronics, programming, cybersecurity and the suchlike.
Also, don't forget to partake in martial arts, weapons, tactical and survival training.
You will need this to stop the governments and criminals infringing your rights.
And last, but not least?
Enjoy the future.

I just started reading the Facebook article. I realise its a dry and long read, but it discusses the use of algorithms to exploit its users, the internal hierarchy, and its (ab)use of power, censorship, and more. even if you don't add it, I thank you for sharing it.

have this as a thank you. this is my second book link contribution, and am working on something else for your efforts in keeping these threads going.

The future is VR, AR, MR, and other wearable computing stuffs on our heads. If Jepson can do what she claims she'll do, then it's certainly going to make it into those devices, and everyone's going to have them.

In fact, someone very similar to her with a very similar background is working at Oculus/Facebook on an almost exact same kind of project, but doing it in the context of VR/AR, and fast tracking it into consumer device possibility in a few years time apparently. She also worked at Google once, with some overlapping time with Jepson. And previously she led DARPA, so you have a good idea how hardcore the development plan will be.

https://www.recode.net/2017/4/19/15361568/facebook-mark-zuckerberg-brain-mind-reader-regina-dugan-building-f8

>Dugan says Facebook’s goal is to create technology that could autonomously type 100 words per minute based on a person’s thoughts “in a few years.”

If it actually works well and it goes into a product that Oculus is planning to do in several years, say a headset that might have a chance at going mainstream with at least the gamer crowd, then we're going to get mind reading devices on a lot of people's heads.
