Why don't we have practical and robust designs anymore? Two examples that come to my mind are the old Sony portable casette players and BMW cars.

>Practical
What about a walkman is practical compared to modern day equivalents?
>Robust
Again, compare it to a modern equivalent. These days cheap, dedicated music players are incredibly durable. You would have to go out of your way and try to break anything but the most bargain bin crap.
>>
>>61247587
We are talking about design, my friend.
>>
>>61247620
So explain what it is exactly that you are complaining about in regards to modern electronics designs.
>>
>Why don't we
Because once you sacrifice design and durability, you can push stuff out on the super cheap.

>examples
Pebble did well in this respect. RIP.
>>
An solid state Walkman is a lot more robust a cassette.

>robust designs
You can get ruggedized smartphones, you just have to be willing to pay more (this is important) and deal with hardware that was a couple years behind when the phone was released and lack of 3rd party ROM support.
>>
Because planned obsolescence of course.

Apple brand cable jacketing is vinyl with matte finish which absorbs dirt, will rip and crack easily

Screens are all made of fucking GLASS, which will probably shatter if dropped on your lawn from 3 ft high at the wrong angle.

Apple would go out of business if they didn't pull shit like this.

AND Apple is STRONGLY opposed to 3rd party repairs.

Just lay down and buy the cosmetic damage warranty, mail it back and hope they don't find some other reason to charge you more money (protip: they always fucking will)

BUT YOU PAY EXTRA FOR QUALITY XD

LOL! Plastic shit that breaks into million pieces if you drop it. And it occasionally "eats" your tape too.

are you clueless or just trolling?

still a lot easier to find a working one compared to an ipod from 2003 though

Star Lord did
>>
>>61249993
the ports say "Headphones", not left/right. So two separate headphone sets plugged in at once may need volume adjusted differently.
>>

I just want a durable, mechanical keyboard with an ISO layout. Thats a beauty, I've had multiple keyboards but I always come back to my IBM membrane keyboard from 1997.
>>
>>61249993

wasnt a design feature.. it was parts / manufacturing / cost decision

ganged pots are usually alot more expensive - i see it in a lot of old circuitry
>>
>>61247117
Dumb goy, don't you want your phone to be slimmer?

I was talking about design. BMW seems to make cars that don't want to be innovative or extremely futuristic (I know, I know, the i8). They just work.

I need a mechanical engineer so I can do a Kickstarter reboot.

That could be cleaned up a lot by just doing a 4 layer PCB.
>>
I gotta admit this anon does got kinda a valid point. I mean shit look at trucks now. They all about the size or bigger of a damn 1980's era ford station wagon (which itself was a tank). The Ford Ranger was the last actual decent midsize truck that was actually a truck and not the whole glorified computerized, loaded down with electronic shit, car like shit that they stuff in trucks now. Not to mention the size/foot print it took up. The new ranger (2020) will be a shameful bastardized sellout, trading on name alone to help sell it.
>>
>>61250430
My only beef with BMW is the use of plastic where metal should have been used. Case in point, the water pump. Plus where is the water pump you ask? Behind the right front wheel so its extra hard to get at. Also the power steering pump on the e46 has a thin shaft which can shear after a couple hundred 1000.

Otherwise my car's been great and I've owned a lot of cars.
>>
>>61247117
Because back then products were designed by engineers for engineers, now are designed by holistic gurus with a feng shuei phd for the hipster crowd.

You're a fucking retard on all levels.
MP3-players that replaced that walkman are both more practical and robust
BMW is not, and has never been considered especially practical and robust compared to other brands

Agreed. OP is fucking retarded.
The sony Walkman was a best of breed, for players, but was soon exceeded by multiple other more elegant solutions. 14.4 seconds of fame.

oh the OTHER FUCKING HAND JOB:
BMWs are the most expensive, crappily designed cum-spot hiders made:

To wit: The BMW 745i, 3.0L ran like a 4.0L because it had and S-10 Turbo... very weak in cooling the 6th cylinder, because crap would collect in a certain place, and make it run both hot, and inefficient.

I can see you like shiny bits of metal.

obsolescence is implicit in rapid technological advance. "i will spend as much on the casing as on the guts, so when it breaks i only need to replace half" works when the guts never change; when they change rapidly you're unlikely to get a full failure cycle for the average user before the casing needs to be redone anyway.

that's even before factoring in the assumptions post-Smith economics of any stripe make about paying $1 today and $1 tomorrow being better than paying $2 today.
