I am thinking about writing a program in C that does Gauss-Jordan elimination. Would this be a good project for a beginner or a cluster fuck?

What, like matrix shit?

Shouldn't be too hard with 2d arrays

In C? I guess it should be pretty horrible if you do everything from scratch. But yeah, go ahead, could be fun.

It's a good training exercise if you don't copy-paste from stackexchange.

Nah screw that.

Write a program to factor polynomials over finite fields.
>>

Yes, but it's extremely simple and naive and not that useful since real programs that deal with matrices use LU combined with heavy BLAS kernel operations. Production LU programs like SuperLU handle tons of edge cases for smaller-medium size matrices or sparse matrices.

im pretty apt at LA, but amateur at C i could try at looking at the proper factorizations. id like to start with the smaller problem tho

yeah i think so buddy, i remember i wrote something similar back in the day, wrote my own simple matrix maths library was fun, and if you want to get more advanced you can have a look at some optimised open source libraries and try and understand the tricks they use to make things faster, it can get very complex and you may have to start understanding hardware as well, but then your well on your way to understanding encryption and graphics programming and all sorts of other fun stuff. good luck.
