Sup /g/

Long time Windows user here

My boss unilaterally decided that we'd switch from perfectly working Dell laptops to pic fucking related.

You guys have any tips for me to survive this shit?
Never used a Mac before and I'm fucking lost.

I heavily rely on keyboard shortcuts and I kinda like the Windows shortcuts:

Win + D: Desktop
Win + L: Lock
Win + I: Settings
Win + Arrow : Move windows to a side or another
Win + E: Explorer

You guys have a list of handy shortcuts for Mac?

can I daisy chain dongles to connect to a second HDMI monitor?

For settings cmd + space + typing "sett" is probably faster. Spotlight is crazy awesome.

Also getting the hang of 3 finger gesture to switch between desktops is much faster than multitasking on Windows either way.

It's inferior to voidtool's "everything" search
can't find half the files I'm looking for, I'm reduced to having to explore the file system

>3 finger gesture to switch between desktops
I can see how that could be useful

Any quick way to put two programs side by side on two halves of the screen? Trivial with Windows and pretty useful for me

It's all about the gestures. 4 finger swipe out shows desktop, three finger side swipes swap workspaces, 3 finger swipe up to display all workspaces (mouse over top edge after swiping up for complete view). Unfortunately, Macs don't have the nice window manager where you can easily do split screen. Otherwise, most things have shortcuts you can Google, and gestures can be configured in tracked settings.

Also, spotlight (function-spacebar) is your friend. Basically works like the windows key (to search/run), but better, and you can install apps yo make it.even better (use command strings like Chrome's search bar, regexes, etc).
>>
>>61185970
>This machine has reduced my productivity significantly so far.
Yes but it's not the fault of the machine that you're not used to use it. Though I get when you're coming from, I hated it too for half a year and almost switched back to Windows.

>Any quick way to put two programs side by side on two halves of the screen?
Now that's done in a pretty stupid way, F3/mission control and then you have to "manually push one inside of the other".
>>
>>61186115
>Basically works like the windows key (to search/run), but better
meh/10
it's not finding anything I'm looking for, just "apps" and shit. not files.

>Macs don't have the nice window manager where you can easily do split screen
that's pretty fucking unfortunate

>>61186138
>Yes but it's not the fault of the machine that you're not used to use it.
I'll admit that

>F3/mission control and then you have to "manually push one inside of the other"
I can't get that to work
I'll try tomorrow when I'll be back at the office AND WILL FINALLY BE ABLE TO USE A FUCKING MOUSE SINCE I LEFT THE DONGLE AT HOME AND DON'T HAPPEN TO HAVE AN USB-C/ BLUETOOTH MOUSE
for fuck's sake
>>
>>61186201
It's better to get used to the gestures, hell you can even abuse force touch to open a new tab as you'd do with the middle button on a mouse.

>I can't get that to work
Try: https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-use-split-view-in-os-x-el-capitan/
Though unless you absolutely have to have them side by side, I'd rather open them in full screen and switch between them with 3 fingers gesture. Shit is instantaneous even on a crappy Core M and very intuitive once you get the hang out of it.
>>
>>61186201
>it's not finding anything I'm looking for, just "apps" and shit. not files.
That's weird. Did you check the Spotlight settings?

nothing relevant in the settings.

I have four or five .kdbx files on my machine, typing .kdbx or kdbx doesn't locate them. frustrating.

That's just weird. It works fine with Word and One Note, and Exel does have the same base, does it not?

Give windows 12/16GB of RAM and mac gets the other 4.
You can suspend Windows VM when you don't need the bloat.

Typical Mac users response
>If you actually have to use totally retarded feature, there is of course the utterly shitty farce of a remotely similar feature the great apple has crafted, though I won't admit it's shit and instead urge you to change the way you are used to interact with literally any other os on the market to the obviously superior, but somehow completely lacking way apple has envisioned you to use it. After all, Facebook and shit posting doesn't require such power user features.

Seriously the amount of 'this power user feature is not available natively, but you can install this $80 app to get a similar functionality' I've read in forums through the years of using macs is quite substantial.

>>
>>61199407

>>
>>61185417
First thing is install brew. It gives you a package manager similar to what you might expect on Linux. Try to install things through either Brew if you can (100% of command line based tools can come through here).

Finder (the Mac equivalent of Explorer) is really awful. If you're a power user have a play with something like mc (midnight commander)* which is a ncurses (terminal based) file explorer.

The built in terminal doesn't work like you might expect it to work (copy pasting, etc). Install iTerm2*.

Mac has its own demu called
Spotlight
which you can access with Apple + space. This can replace win + R as well as the start menu.

*Alternative clients exist, do your own research.
