That's a bit tight for modern distros. especially since some (Ubuntu does this) have a habit of keeping multiple kernels around. I'd give it 512MB. That's rather more than you strictly need but it's not a lot in absolute terms, and it'll ensure you don't have problems when a new kernel comes around. Especially since with a static /boot and an encrypted rest of the disk it's a pain to fuck with partition sizes after the fact.

Thanks. I have one last question, if i want to create snapshots of my system later in case i fuck up and my root partition is 30GB that means the snapshot partition also has to be 30GB?
>>
>>61174805
I know btrfs and ZFS snapshots are copy-on-write, so snapshots are "free" (only data that you change takes up extra space, and only until you delete the last snapshot that references it) And I'm pretty sure LVM is the same way, though I haven't used LVM much myself. So in other words, no, you don't need an extra 30GB to snapshot a 30GB partition.

If the file has proper permissions you can store this file anyway and if the rest of the users know the exact path of the file they will be able to access it.

Just pick whatever description suits your file best

Or make your own directory with read access for everyone

I have a weird graphical glitch I am not sure how to debug.
I have this old game I play through wine.
When I quit the game, the colors are off on the screen which ran the game.
I have found that the going into the gamma settings (I use KDE) restores the colors on the screen without having me change anything.

Does anyone know if there is a way to automate this so I can run it in the desktop file when the game terminates?

I have that as part of my left prompt. As a clock of course it's pointless, what it's convenient for is knowing when the latest command finished. Admittedly that doesn't sound super important, but I sometimes find it useful whereas my username and hostname I don't need to be reminded of.

I recently also added a human-friendly representation of the latest command's runtime as my right prompt. Not as accurate as running it with time but pretty convenient.

R9 380 is Volcanic Islands and you have a choice of free amdgpu driver or proprietary amdgpu-pro driver.

I can say from experience that the free amdgpu driver is superior in every way, even gaming performance. At least if you use any recent version of it.

What distro do you have?
>>
>>61175132
Start with
man xrandr
. You can change your gamma values with that, and maybe you can also find some innocuous command that gets rid of the glitch without changing anything.

Might also be a good idea to check winehq for reports of that bug and fixes/workarounds.

The most recent versions do. AMD drivers were always wonky but at least this time they're wonky in a good way.

Although *Ubuntu seems to have pretty old packages so you might get better performance out of the proprietary driver. You'll probably have to test that yourself.

Link for proprietary driver:
https://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/AMDGPU-PRO-Driver-for-Linux-Release-Notes.aspx
There are installation instructions that I know work since I used them some months ago.
Also contrary to what's written on the page, you do NOT need the LunarG Vulkan SDK to use Vulkan.

Pretty much my train of thought but then I decided I'd rather just do
command && now
if I care about the finishing time. I already have various notification aliases (one that beeps, one that shows on screen and one that sends me an email) so having another that I just append to the long running command makes sense.
I do like having the username and hostname displayed in the prompt because I use ssh quite a lot and often switch users on the same machine.

>>

It should have worked then...
Anyway, you can either try to fix the problem that keeps X from starting or uninstall the driver.
Both require that you switch to another virtual terminal, which you can do by pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 (or F2, F3, ... there are 7 in total on Ubuntu).

You can read through the logfile and search for errors and then try to fix them:
less /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Arrow keys for navigation, space scrolls one page, q to quit.

Uninstalling the driver is covered in the guide but I'm going to put it here too:
sudo amdgpu-pro-uninstall

That's the problem with proprietary GPU drivers. They work all right but are an absolute bitch to fix if something goes wrong.

As a slightly different approach to the problem, you can consider upgrading to or reinstalling Xubuntu 17.04 which has a pretty recent version of the free amdgpu driver.

I write a quick alias to convert all PNG images to JPG images. However, it sometimes fails and creates a whole bunch of files with weird, repeating names. I'm guessing something's wrong with how I rename the files by using basename.

Could someone take a look at this alias and tell me how to write it better so it's more stable? Thanks!

alias png2jpg='for f in *.png; do convert -strip -quality 95% "$f" "`basename "$f" .png`.jpg"; done; rm *.png'

Hmm.. no. some have spaces tho but I think this should work fine with spaces.

I always wondered if there was a better way to remove the file extension and add a new one when doing alias and bash scripting... Something's definitely fucked up but I don't know what.

one time last year I used this alias and my whole machine locked up. only SYSREQ managed to save me from losing files.

>>
>>61182522
I found that 7z gives the best compression.
tar.gz seems to be the standard. git uses it, and basically any source code archive is wrapped in a gzipped tarball, and it's installed by default probably on every distro.
I don't know about xz though, I rarely see it.

There is no policy stoping new packages, it is just down to packagers not focusing on new upstream versions during the freeze and then now new versions taking a while to get packaged, transition and not be blocked by their dependancies doing likewise. tl;dr 1:
- stop using aliases
- stop using backticks (these things ``, and use $() instead)
png2jpg() {
for file in *.png; do
convert -quality 95% -strip "${file%.*}.jpg"
done

rm *.png

tl;dr 1.1: delete only actually converted shit

png2jpg() {
for file in *.png; do
convert -quality 95% -strip "${file%.*}.jpg" && \
rm "${file}"
done
}

tl;dr 2: use mogrify which does the job in-place

png2jpg(){

mogrify -format jpg -quality 95% -strip "$file"
done
}

tl;dr 3:

I think it really it's any issue because it proceeds with potentially dangerous unexpected(!) behavior. Expecting your input to be correct and running as root when it isn't is irresponsible. Someone posted the obvious solution of checking it against username before uid, instead of after. Imagine if any other project had had a bug reported against it that it produces unexpected and dangerous behavior in input that it can demonstrably by expected to encounter in the wild, would you be happy if the devs just said "will, don't pass it malformed input and there will be no problem".

It is inadvisable to describe the free software community, or any human community, as an “ecosystem,” because that word implies the absence of ethical judgment.

The term “ecosystem” implicitly suggests an attitude of nonjudgmental observation: don't ask how what should happen, just study and understand what does happen. In an ecosystem, some organisms consume other organisms. In ecology, we do not ask whether it is right for an owl to eat a mouse or for a mouse to eat a seed, we only observe that they do so. Species' populations grow or shrink according to the conditions; this is neither right nor wrong, merely an ecological phenomenon, even if it goes so far as the extinction of a species.

By contrast, beings that adopt an ethical stance towards their surroundings can decide to preserve things that, without their intervention, might vanish—such as civil society, democracy, human rights, peace, public health, a stable climate, clean air and water, endangered species, traditional arts…and computer users' freedom.

This shows an ignorance of the etymology of the word ecology.

i tried to change from fedora to arch and i already fucked everything up. when booting the archiso from usb, after selecting usb efi from the bios boot menu and then efi from the cd boot menu i get black screen. i read somewhere that it might be nvidia's fault (i have an integrate+discrete gpu notebook from lenovo) but no workaround works. if i try to boot without efi (from the bios menu) i get failed to load ldlinux.c33
