my speakers are connected to the TV I use as a monitor which is connected to the GPU, and the headphones connected to the 3.5mm jack/on board sound card. So I just edit my .asoundrc every time I need to switch

my interface is configured so it just mutes the main outs when I plug in headphones, don't need any additional switching

Actually, the optimal audio port switcher is PulseAudio.

You can control what audio ports are active even on an application-level. Say I want my browser to run through my PC speakers but the audio program should go to some bluetooth speaker or something.
