version control is about more than being able to revert. You want to be able to answer questions like "Who made this change? When was it made?" You want to be able to easily have separate branches and facilities for merging them. You want to be able to answer the above questions even in the presence of many such branches, with different people doing different things to different parts of the code at different times.

Asking again because pls respond.
I'm trying to run a program (MP3Gain). Every time I try to run it though, an unrelated .msi file of an old game I have runs in its place and doesn't let the damn thing run.
Reinstalling does nothing; it runs fine the first time the wizard is done installing it, but any subsequent run triggers the msi file which never advances and has to be task killed to get rid of it; and I have no fucking idea why or how these two are even remotely related.
The standalone zip version with no installer behaves just about the same. I tried uninstalling the game, and that did make it work, but it started happening again after reinstalling the game because it is something I play often. It's like both programs are using the same msi file but I DON'T FUCKIN UNDERSTAND WHY.

What is going on?

The X56?0 Xeons were LGA 1366 chips. Consumer X58 motherboards accept them fine in most cases (some need a BIOS upgrade). They share the overclockability of the first-gen i7s they were contemporaneous with, and routinely get to 4GHz. They have six cores and hyperthreading. They're 32nm and new enough to have things like AES-NI. They can be had on ebay or from various Amazon sellers for $50 or less. Being LGA 1366, they accept all the same coolers as 1366 i7s.

In short they're an excellent upgrade for anyone who owns an X58 motherboard to put them in. They're cheap and still respectably powerful to this day.

Separating the declaration of a function, which the compiler needs to construct a call to the function, from the definition of the function, which the compiler doesn't need at all, gives you a few nice things: the ability to modify implementations without modifying client code, the ability to conceal implementation details from client code, and the ability to write your implementations with out having to put any time into ensuring that every function is written in exactly the right place in your file.
That last one will really ring true for anyone who had to do CS homework iin Pascal.

Yes.
Newer laptops have chipset problems with 7.
Depends on specs and brand.
Example, There are Thinkpads that are 11 year old that still work with no problems, meanwhile your average HP laptop will die from overheating in 2-3 years because HP planned obsolescence where they dont add any proper cooling so laptops are 70-80°C.
Malwarebytes + Adwcleaner and you not opening shady stuff.

your pc will either boot from your hdd and load your old grub install or it will boot from the ssd and load the windows bootloader.

just reinstall grub after installing to the ssd and set the ssd as your boot device in bios. then your pc will load grub, giving you the option to boot ubuntu or load the windows bootloader.

at least that's how it should work, but i've never used windows 10. 10 might complicate things, so make sure to do a backup of your ubuntu install just in case.

> the definition of a function, which the compiler doesn't need at all.
Well actually, compiles need something to compile

> ability to modify implementations with modifying client code
No. If you change the implementation sufficiently to have to change how it is called you are going to have to modify client code no matter where the method is defined. If you are trying to refer to linking to a library then that is not what they asked.

> the ability to conceal implementation details from the client code
Suppressing a clients freedom is or arguable benefit and, again, no reason to mandate the separation.

> without having to ensure every function is in the right place
That's nice, but it's only necessary because of how the simplicaly the compiler it's written.

The internet is a series of tubes. These tubes go in a plethora of ways.
You are taking the long about route which is why its slow.
You have more servers that you are talking to to get to your end point.

That speed test is the closest servers to you, which is why they saturate your pipe
>>
Sorry in advance, these are a lot of questions but they can be grouped together: I just updated my phone, I come from a jurassic 4.4.4 and going to 6.1/7.1. I wanted to know if the old must-have apps are still used:

Is Adaway still the best hosts-level ad blocker?
Please tell me a file manager (with root access) that is not as bloated as ES
Is Nova Launcher still the best custom launcher?
Is MX Player still the best video player?
Is SuperSU still the best superuser app?
Is TWRP still the best custom recovery?
Does anyone still use titanium backup?
Is Xposed still widely used?
Is Zooper still the best widget factory?

Also Iwara is way better than the old alternative, trust me.

Yes, you were limited to watch like 7-8 videos a day, low quality and resolution versions of them and compressed flash video instead the original source video like iwara does unless you paid $20 monthly.
Also popular videos get put behind premium automatically, and thanks to MMD sekrit club faggatory this site was really popular for MMD creators that want their content to be removed automatically or limited.

Right so I have an Ipad 2 (inb4 appleshit).

At some point or another I think an update fucked it and now its constantly stuck in recovery mode.

I've tried a soft reset. I also went to itunes and tried to update it through there. Basically when I try to update or restore it through itunes it will say the update is complete and that the ipad just needs to reboot and then it will show up in itunes or turn on. This doesn't happen. It either times out and can't connect or just straight up stops rebooting.

The cable is fine, the pc its connected to is fine, everything is up to date minus the ipads firmware.

I've also just let it charge for a while, and even when I was sure that it had messed up the reboot I let it do it's thing for 3 hours or so.

pls help /g/

Am I losing any audio quality by setting Realtek to quadraphonic and using "speaker fill" (where it outputs stereo to the two speakers separately instead of actual quadraphonic)?. I only want to use two speakers at a time, the desktop ones when I'm at my desk and the TV ones when I'm at the couch. I plan on simply turning off the speakers when not in use.
I have it set up and it sounds fine so far, but I don't want it to bite me in the ass when I go and try something with bass or something.

Recently put together a small computer for my office but I'm having issues getting it to display anything on my monitor.
Build is
Super Micro C7H170‑M
Intel Pentium G4620
EVGA 400B PSU
8GB DDR4 RAM
I've already tried reseating everything, the fans seem to be working but I just cant get a signal through the DVI or hdmi ports. What do?
>>
>>61127620
>That motherboard
Are you setting up a small office computer or a server? should have bought a MSI H110 motherboard.

Alright lets start.

Did you connect the CPU 4/8 pin power cable?
The 24 pin motherboard cable?
Did you pushed RAM till the locks are in place?

Do the fans keep spinning or they stop?
>>
>>61127495
Actually, I didn't have to do the quadraphonic option. For some reason it didn't work until I set it to that, but now it works just set to stereo. Whatever. Same question still remains, but I'm not hearing any difference in quality anyway, and there's no delay between the four speakers when I do have them on too, so that's a plus if I'm presenting something at my computer to someone on the couch, so we both get audio. As far as I can tell, the computer is simply sending two different audio signals to two different amplifiers, so I don't imagine the quality would be any different? I'm retarded when it comes to audio shit.
>>
>>61127620

yes, the fill sucks ass, but if you unironically use linux (preferably gentoo) you will have front speaker signal copied to back with stereo sources, windows xp style. Doesnt matter with 5.1/7.1 etc signals though.

I usually adjust the volume on the knobs for the desktop speakers and the stereo's remote for the TV. I keep Windows volume at 100 all the time. Not sure if that's what the default is. and will either be compatible with my current RAM stick for Dual Channel shit?

>If I am a single developer, do I need it? since I see it getting suggested even for that case.

I know this is an old post, but why do people do this?

>Hey guys, is git really that great? Should I use it?
>Yes you should use it
>I mean everyone is telling me to use it. But is it really great? It looks hard :(
>Yes it's that great, use it
>But I mean... I'm not in a team I'm just one developer working alone. Should I reallly realllllly use it?
>Yes you should really use it.

Just take the fucking answer. Git is awesome, it changes your entire workflow.

Ever trusted an IDE to do something and it went off and touched a bunch of files doing a bunch of crazy shit and you don't have a clue what it just did to your project? Git can show you. Line by line, every change. You can undo any or all of it.

Ever spent hours trying to find a bug that turned out to be a search and replace that replaced something you didn't expect it to? If you used git you'd have seen that change sticking out like a sore thumb when you reviewed your commit. And if you're too lazy to review diffs when committing you can use it after the fact to checkout an earlier build, see that the bug isn't there, and examine the exact lines of code that changed between no bug and bug.

Ever gone down the rabbit hole trying to fix something and got so tangled up breaking everything that you forgot what you even changed you tried so much? What if you got diverted part way through and made a big bug fix you want to keep and don't want to have to figure out again. If you were smart you'd have kept that bug fix isolated in its own commit. Then you can checkout a branch without the mess you made, and cherry pick the commit with the work you want to keep. If you weren't smart at least you can see what you did to reproduce it.

Use Git.

That one runs at 1.5v and the other runs at 1.35v.
DDR3 = 1.5v, the standard RAM that runs on all laptops.
DDR3L = 1.35v, designed for ULV notebooks (Atom powered laptops mostly).

Tldr: the same shit, get the first one.
Yes, Dual channel will activate as long you have 2 stick of the same capacity and timings.

Um. Everything?

VS Code is F12 to go to definition. You will probably need an extension for the language you're using but it installed a C# one for me automatically.

Mouse over text is called intellisence in Microsoft land, it does that in VS Code too.

Every text editor can do this shit. Even vim if you rice it the fuck out with extensions like this http://www.omnisharp.net/ (using C# as an example)

Thanks again for all the help.
>>
>>61129086
CL is just a short way to say CAS Latency.

11-11-11-28 is the latency of everything.

The first number is CAS Latency (CL).
Second RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD)
Third RAS Precharge time (tRP)
4th Cycle time (tRAS)

While rarely mentioned there is also
5th Row refresh Cycle time (tRFC)
6th Command Rate (CR).

But for 95% of people only CL matters.

Hello /g/ I need help. I'm very uninformed when it comes to technology too by the way, though I have read the sticky. Basically I'm looking for a laptop and haven't the slightest idea where to start. The two that have stood out to me are the Dell XPS 13 and macbooks. Is there an advantage to one or the other? From what I've read, the xps 13 2in1 seems to be lesser than the regular, and then with apple i really know little about whether I want a pro or air or one of the older models of the two.

If it helps, I plan on spending under $1500, and will really only be using it to do homework and watch movies (definitely want a good screen). I got to try a few at a Best Buy, I did like the touchscreen, but now after reading some I'm not sure if the 2in1 is the way to go. Help?

Look for a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 if you want a good screen and a 2-1 tablet/laptop.
Should be around $700.

Otherwise a Dell XPS 15 if screen quality is your principal and mayor concern, the screen is not touch tho.
Should be $800-1100.
>>
>>61129313
you will be dependant on the DAC/amp in your TV, assuming that's decent then the quality will be fine
it's basically no different to plugging your headphones into your pc directly, only instead of using your pc's dac/amp, you're using the televisions'
the audio won't degrade going over HDMI, as it's a digital signal

Sometimes by unplugging it and pulling on the blades I can get it to shut up for like a minute, but then it starts to make like dripping noises and starts chafing again eventually. I tried blowing an air duster in the gaps behind the motor and it didn't do much.

It changes the noise based on if it's horizontal or vertical, so I guess they are shitty sleeve bearings.

My issue is, some folders/files have ::$SECURITY_DESCRIPTOR next to them and won't recover. I contacted their support but the program doesn't seem to be well maintained so I don't have much hope that I'll get a response.

I broke the plastic casing off, but the chip has company name or numbers written on it on ether side. maybe it was to add wifi capabilities to a device other that a computer? Oh, I suppose it is just a weird way of supporting multiple form factors.

If that ethernet printout you posted earlier is from this dongle (check dmesg after plugging it in to see what it is being detected as) then I would guess that it is supposed to be paired up to a specific device or it has a pre-configured AP that it puts up. Or that it is just one of those simple usb wireless chips (they are tiny) that don't actually use the wifi protocol they just blast the USB protocol of some 2.4GHz channel to another dongle so it is like a wireless usb cable between devices.

2>&1 just redirects stderr to stdout
3>&1 does who the fuck knows

If you want both the error stream and the regular stdout stream in one file, you need:
2>&1 >/tmp/some_file.log

If you just want the standard output, leave out the 2>&1 and just put

>>/tmp/some_file.log

at the end and you'll find the output there the next time it runs. (>> instead of > does "Append mode" which means every time it runs it'll write more to the end of the file, instead of replacing the logfile each time it runs.)

Pretty much anything has samba... I assume the main ram requirement for freeNAS is for ZFS because a file server really shouldn't use much.

This is a thing that I have seen around: https://www.openmediavault.org/
>>
>>61133754
Looks like lftp has its own logging built in.
Check if you have a ~/.lftp directory with logfiles in it.
http://mewbies.com/how_to_handle_various_other_logs_and_history_files_tutorial.htm#01
>>
>>61133804
Yeah, I think it is just ZFS that makes freeNAS need a lot of ram.

Openmediavault looks good to me I guess, but what is the difference between that and just installing debian? I really have no clue what I'm talking about when it comes to networking, which is why I just have an external hard drive right now.

I guess my question really should be what's the easiest way to get a little server or something going so I can start learning what I really want.
>>
I'm too retarded to use IRC, the wiki currently doesn't have a guide. How do I download my albanese animations from that thing?
>>
>>61133909
You said it yourself. Install Debian and set up services on it. You learn shit by trying and failing and trying again and doing.

Protip: ZFS wants RAM, but doesn't actually need that much of it. It just prefers a big cache, since it assumes you're doing many-user, random-access workloads. If your workload is one client doing sequential access (eg, you watching anime) it'll manage fine with not much memory.
>>
>>61134058
ZFS mainly used lots of ram because it expects to be the primary purpose of the machine it runs on
not sure about freebsd, but the linux version at least also has the problem of not use the same memory management as linux itself, so zfs's cache doesn't show up as cache memory, but rather resident memory, which can be confusing
>>
>>61134094
ZFS and the Linux filesystem cache used to compete with each other, but that's fixed now.

I'm trying to connect to a website through a proxy. I'm using SSH tunneling through a VPS with a dedicated IP and the SwitchySharp plugin for Chrome. My proxied IP reports correctly, all these proxy tests show no info is being leaked, but a specific site I'm trying to connect to somehow detects my proxy. It's a clean VM install, no cookies or anything like that lying around.

How are they doing it? Can you tell that an IP address belongs to a VPS host by looking it up? It's a pretty obscure host so I doubt they're on any lists.

My tower is making a weird beeping noise every now and then, what gives? computer was built less than 7 months ago and this beeping has started occurring last week.
It's a very feint "be-beep beep", at one point I thought it was a baby cricket hiding inside somehow.
It sounded like it was coming for the wifi card but that's also located next to the graphics card so I don't know.
It only seems to happen late at night...
Also last night when I powered down while the beeping was occurring, the beeping slowly died as the computer shut down. Might be helpful info for anyone who has experienced this before or know what's up.

TP-link wifi, GTX 960 gpu msi. I'm quite sure it's coming from one of these two, hopefully not the motherboard.

Yes this was my thoughts exactly after listening to it when powering down last night. I can't imagine why the fan would make that sound though, getting loose I guess? Or why it would happen during night time when it's much cooler as apposed to during the day when the fan is actually running harder.

Wow, a situation where INSTALL GENTOO might not actually be a meme.

I'm not getting my hopes up too much about the thing. It's a 12" model so it has the 1.33Ghz CPU, 1.25GB RAM (that's apparently the maximum it'll allow), GeForce FX Go5200 w/64MB VRAM. Should still be usable as a basic machine though.

Mining is, in the most basic terms, trying a very very very many lot of simple mathematical combinations. CPUs typically have a between 1 and 16 very complex cores to do these in parallel. GPUs are like CPUs, only they have many many more, but simpler, core. A GTX 1080, for example, has a core configuration of 3584:224:88, that is, 3584!! shader cores, 224 texture cores, and 88 render cores. They were specifically designed for this, to be able to render so many shapes and textures every second. GPGPU (like mining) is "abusing" these cores to do general-purpose stuff instead of what they were made for.

The specific difference between AMD and NVIDIA, here, is that AMD has less but more complex cores, and NVIDIA has more but less complex cores. Since these are simple mathematical combinations, AMD outperformes NVIDIA here.
>>
>>61135436
Ah okay. From a quick search of CAD's reliance on CPU cores, it seems it doesn't rely too heavily on higher core count, and as long as it's 2+ cores you'll be fine. I'd personally be a cheapskate and go for the dual core, since all 7th gen dual core i5's have 4 threads (I'm aware that cores aren't threads, and threads aren't cores), so you'd save some cash, and have a bit more headroom for storage.
Might be worth listing which i5 they're both equipped with, as that'd also shed some light on IGP performance, which could be a bit more beneficial a choice between the two. Also, would it be correct to assume they have the same amount of memory since you're not listing it?

It's one of those things homeopathy type people debate (there's whole wifi-free communities for people who claim to be "allergic" to it), but non-ionizing radiation is supposed to be harmless unless it's like 1000 times stronger. You'd probably have more risk from your cell phone's transmitter anyway. It has to pump out enough juice to cover miles of distance.
>>
>>61136038
template? you mean command line arguments?
for wav, just;
ffmpeg -i input.at3 output.wav

and an mp3 example;

>>
>>61135301
Most people are fine with the dual core. Also it probably has a bit better battery life. If you don't have reason to expect you'll need the additional power, I'd go with the cheaper one. Laptops often die before they become obsolete, and you probably can't upgrade the GPU. So if your situation changes radically in the future, you'll probably buy new hardware then. You might check if the laptop has an extra bay, in case you decide to add an HDD in the future.

The second one probably has considerably less battery life, and is heavier. The IPS is a big plus though, can makes colors look way better. If you're going to do any somewhat taxing gaming the upgrade would be worth it, or any kind of editing/coding that's GPU dependent. Otherwise going minimalist is fine.

I'm doing some data mining. I've clustered people according to their interests (stuff like sports, tv, games, arts... all graded from 1 to 10 meaning how much the person is interested in that). There is an additional parameter, something like "If speed date partner would like to date them again", that I didn't use in clustering, and after the data is clustered I'm checking upon which cluster has the most positive responses. Should I include that parameter in clustering too? It's a categorical type of an attribute, simple yes or no coded as 1 and 0.
