LUKS is pretty good. Algorithms like AES are really fast but that speed can work against you when someone is running through passwords as fast as they can. There are no significant advantages as a home user. Something like Twofish would probably be better because it's slower. You won't notice the speed difference at all when entering your password once since the speed difference is a fraction of a second, but it will slow down any attackers and make it a giant pain in the ass for them. Also use a pass phrase, but use odd words and throw in spaces, numbers, and symbols. 15-20 characters is good enough.

TLDR - use Twofish to waste the time of the CIA nigger trying to crack your shit
